bcl··on Blackphone
Shipping in June is not exactly 'here'. Come back when independent people can verify and reproduce the software it is running.

Open sourcing "vast majority of its code" is not good enough -- this thing is selling security and if you can't rebuild it all yourself there's really no point.

bcl··on Show HN: Check if your browser is vulnerable to the Apple SSL bug
You can already do this here - https://www.imperialviolet.org:1266/

On OSX Firefox and Chrome fail and Safari happily loads it. Yay for not using system crypto libraries.

bcl··on Life Without Principle (1854)
I would also include Walking in that list. But I may as well expand that and recommend all of his essays.
bcl··on Idaho to take back control of privately run state prison
Interesting, but not really HN material.
bcl··on Beware of Coinbase. They Reversed My BTC Sale
You cannot really believe that a few posts on HN, whether they are positive or negative, really are a good indicator of Coinbase's reputation, can you? Anyone can post anything and the more negative it looks the more people upvote it. Upvotes do not correlate to truth or accuracy.

For example if I were to post that I have used Coinbase multiple times with no problems I wouldn't expect to see a single upvote. It isn't news.

bcl··on Beware of Coinbase. They Reversed My BTC Sale
Time to stop these posts. This isn't coinbase support and it isn't a forum to air your problems.
bcl··on Gravity Powered Engine
Lack of proper respect for the laws of physics.
bcl··on Expanding Context in Diffs
When working locally you can do something similar with -U<n> and I've also found using --patience can sometimes generate cleaner patches.
bcl··on New Linux worm targets routers, cameras, “Internet of things” devices
Manufacturers need to do a better job making these appliances easier for consumers to keep updated. And this isn't just a problem with Linux, it is a problem with the designs being fire and forget.
bcl··on FDA Orders Genetic Testing Firm 23andMe to Halt Sales
From the 23andme TOS:

"You should not change your health behaviors solely on the basis of information from 23andMe. Make sure to discuss your Genetic Information with a physician or other health care provider before you act upon the Genetic Information resulting from 23andMe Services. For most common diseases, the genes we know about are only responsible for a small fraction of the risk. There may be unknown genes, environmental factors, or lifestyle choices that are far more important predictors. If your data indicate that you are not at elevated genetic risk for a particular disease or condition, you should not feel that you are protected. The opposite is also true; if your data indicate you are at an elevated genetic risk for a particular disease or condition, it does not mean you will definitively develop the disease or condition. In either case, if you have concerns or questions about what you learn through 23andMe, you should contact your physician or other health care provider."

bcl··on Notch Is A Wearable Sensor & App For Tracking And Capturing Body Movements
They may want to rethink their name, when you say Notch most people respond with Minecraft.
bcl··on Ask HN: today is Sunday, where is the Adi Shamir - Dorit Ron paper?
I would expect it to show up here eventually:

http://www.wisdom.weizmann.ac.il/~dron/

bcl··on Ask HN: How can you make a MacBookPro keyboard productive for programming?
Use a different keyboard. Seriously, I've had to take mine in 3 times now because the keys keep breaking their hooks and flopping around. Right now my 6 key is feeling like it is about to go.

bcl··on I made a distributed, anonymous network for online discussion
* You need to describe how it actually works. Describe the network protocol well enough that someone can re-implement it in their own favorite language.

* Your license sucks. Restricting modified code from connecting to the network tells me that your network protocol is fragile and exploitable

* How is your system better than Tor and a hidden service?

bcl··on New Documents Confirm Police Vehicles’ Real-Time Access To DHS Spy Cameras
Some more background on this - http://seattletimes.com/html/latestnews/2022269628_spdwirele...

"But the ACLU has criticized the city for purchasing and employing technology, as well as an array of waterfront security cameras and unmanned aerial drones, without first holding public hearings and drafting policies on how to govern the devices."

bcl··on New Documents Confirm Police Vehicles’ Real-Time Access To DHS Spy Cameras
They are referring to ... "including the controversial Homeland Security-run Fusion Center," -- http://fixyt.com/watch?v=jgZzRrTo5r8
bcl··on Fight Like You're Right, Listen Like You're Wrong
Referer links are generally frowned upon.
bcl··on How long do disk drives last?
Anecdotal data-point: a few years ago I rescued the data off my 3.5" floppies from the early 90's (IBM PC and Atari ST formats) and they all seemed to be fine.

I don't have any hardware to read my pile to 5.25 Atari 800 disks.

bcl··on Landscape: Hosted continuous Python code metrics
I prefer using pylint in a pre-commit hook so that I can catch problems before pushing them.
bcl··on Did a murderer and a sex offender just save Oklahoma $20 million?
Where is the source? The taxpayers are paying their room and board, this software should be freely available on github.

Might even help with the auditing process.

bcl··on Ask HN: Getting paid to work on open source full-time?
Red Hat. And we're hiring: http://jobs.redhat.com/
bcl··on Chinese appliances are shipping with malware-distributing WiFi chips
Where's the teardown of one of these devices? I'm not going to believe it until I actually see some evidence of it from a reliable source.
bcl··on Don't use autofill in your browser
And then only if you opt-in for the site.
bcl··on Core Secret – Secret sharing between Bluetooth LE peers on iOS
I lost interest in maintaining it so I dropped it from the store.
bcl··on Core Secret – Secret sharing between Bluetooth LE peers on iOS
Works fine. I used to have an app in the store that did this (SharePics).
bcl··on [dead]
HN is not http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/
bcl··on Amazon selling fake cycling gear
Same experience here. In one case where there were missing components from a 3rd party order the Amazon rep. sat on the phone with me as I picked out individual replacements which they shipped to me at no extra cost.
bcl··on The ocean is broken
Not really. Here is Cliff Mass' response:

bcl··on Internet Issues in the US - Possible Backbone Issue
http://www.internetpulse.net/ and http://traceroute.org/ are two sites I used in addition to the usual unix tools like traceroute.
