bckr··on Show HN: Needle: We Distilled Gemini Tool Calling into a 26M Model
I think it’s worth having a tiny model that can convert a short sentence into a structured tool call. Now you can add an orchestration layer and you have separation of concerns. That orchestration layer can be a mixture of deterministic and probabilistic systems. Break the foundation model into several single use tools, please!
bckr··on Running Gemma 4 locally with LM Studio's new headless CLI and Claude Code
yes. But also some stuff will be amazing.
bckr··on Employers use your personal data to figure out the lowest salary you'll accept
Are you part of a union? How can we get the tech industry unionized?
bckr··on Running Gemma 4 locally with LM Studio's new headless CLI and Claude Code
I think it’s ALL getting commoditized. The winners here are engineers (who are onboard with the agentic surge) and, hopefully, users who get more and better software.
bckr··on Scientists are working on "everything vaccines"
“Put that **** directly into my veins”, as they say
bckr··on Claws are now a new layer on top of LLM agents
Look, we’ve had nukes for almost 100 years now. Do you really think our ancient alien zookeepers are gonna let us wipe with AI? Semi /j
bckr··on AI doesn’t reduce work, it intensifies it
not a very helpful response tbh
bckr··on AI doesn’t reduce work, it intensifies it
Labor organization yes! I don't quite know how to achieve it. I also worry that my desire to become a manager is in direct conflict with my desire to contribute to labor organization.

On a separate note, I have the intensification problem in my personal work as well. I sit down to study, but, first, let me just ask Claude to do some research in the background... Oh, and how is my Cursor doing on the dashboard? Ah, right, studying... Oh, Claude is done...

bckr··on xAI joins SpaceX
The average person sees some headlines and gets a vague awareness that the guy is some kind of super genius who is single handedly changing the world.

The average person who has an opinion on musk has roughly the same long term memory consolidation pattern as the average person in general.

bckr··on xAI joins SpaceX
Conveniently, about the amount of time it takes for the average person to forget and/or rematerialize in a new parallel dimension
bckr··on The 600-year-old origins of the word 'hello'
> and wait for the caller to speak first

You know why this is, right? Most phone calls these days are spam or otherwise annoyances. Many are literally just seeing if a person picks up. They’re listening to see if you’re a real human being.

The phone system is FUBAR.

bckr··on Re: Mix: open-source repairable blender
I’ve been playing ARC Raiders. These things are how I imagine the blueprints in that game to be. Hand-buildable every day tools that prioritize for reliability
bckr··on Scott Adams has died
A family member has been living with prostate cancer for around a decade. Get screened and get treated.
bckr··on The future of software development is software developers
The new abstraction is “this corporation owns this IP and has engineers who can fix and extend it at will”. You can’t git clone that.

But if there is something off the shelf that you can use for the task at hand? Great! The stakeholders want it to do these other 3000 things before next summer.

bckr··on GPT-5.2
Gemini is good at reading bad handwriting you say? Might need to give it a shot at my 10 years of journals
bckr··on Greeting Vocalizations in Domestic Cats Are More Frequent with Male Caregivers
I’m afraid you’re conflating understanding with obedience.
bckr··on I designed and printed a custom nose guard to help my dog with DLE
Extremely inspiring
bckr··on OpenAI declares 'code red' as Google catches up in AI race
That’s where they take their big pile of data and train the model to do next-token-prediction.
bckr··on Grokipedia is the antithesis of Wikipedia
“Data voids”
bckr··on SIMA 2: An agent that plays, reasons, and learns with you in virtual 3D worlds
My friend that is AI. However, it can get a lot better: be more aware of screen content, follow multiple instructions at once, keep context in mind throughout the conversation and from past interactions
bckr··on The last-ever penny will be minted today in Philadelphia
That’s a terribly myopic take
bckr··on I analyzed the lineups at the most popular nightclubs
My favorites are Public Works, The Midway, and 1015 Folsom
bckr··on The Programming Languages Zoo
This brings up a question I’ve had for a while:

Is it possible to create a programming language that has every possible feature all at once?

I realize there are many features that are opposed to each other. Is it possible to “simply” set a flag at compile / runtime and otherwise support everything? How big would the language’s source code be?

bckr··on Computer science courses that don't exist, but should (2015)
Merging strategies, conflict resolution, bisect debugging, and version control in general are very computer sciencey.

Would make a great course.

bckr··on Andrej Karpathy – It will take a decade to work through the issues with agents
> Its "world model" is several degrees removed from the real world.

Like insects that weave tokens

bckr··on Why Wikipedia cannot claim the Earth is not flat
That the ideas are given little attention is the substantial basis in determining that they are fringe.

If an idea is given a lot of attention, it might be mainstream or fringe, depending on how accepted it is. It might be getting a lot of negative attention, or it might just be getting a lot of attention right now. It might be transitioning from fringe to mainstream.

But if it is not getting any attention, or very little, then it is by definition fringe.

bckr··on Why Wikipedia cannot claim the Earth is not flat
It’s an essay with a title that is tongue-in-cheek. It’s throwing shade at flat earthers.
bckr··on Global Village Construction Set
I’m thinking the vast majority of the value comes not from enabling survival but from de-alienation, which I believe is fundamental in reaching a better overall state.
bckr··on Global Village Construction Set
I think any serious countries of the future will spend substantial resources planting self-sufficiency caches every so many kilo acres. Students should be taught the basics of booting and sustaining a self-sufficient pod.

It shouldn’t be about isolationism / anarchy, but about limiting the blast radius for any given disaster.

Finally it also serves as a center for rehab, starting from scratch, and community service. The ultimate social safety net.
