bcassedy··on The bottom is dropping out of Netflix
I haven't canceled yet but am considering it. They have a few problems for me -

They don't make it easy to discover content. They still have quite a lot of good original content that isn't promoted and a slew of third party things that aren't promoted or discoverable at all unless they happen to make the trending list

The majority of their original, promoted content is watered down crap designed for mass appeal.

For TV shows, when they do produce something of quality they often dump it if it doesn't find an audience immediately or it doesn't drive "new subscribers". Leaving a bunch of stories half told doesn't give me the confidence that it's worth the investment to start on their new content. This is especially problematic because it is a vicious cycle where since they aggressively cancel stuff that isn't performing, people don't invest their time in new stuff because of the expectation it gets canceled, means more new stuff underperforms, leading to more cancelations, and further eroding the trust of viewers. It's also negatively impacted by poor discoverability.

Their UI is seemingly optimized to shove their latest broad appeal stuff in my face and seems to deliberately make it hard to find anything else.

It's not pocket change for people early in their career. An early engineer in a series A company could easily be getting 10k+ in options

I think this is the main issue.

I graduated from a bootcamp 7 years ago and even back then it was becoming clear that despite admissions clear preference for people that would be successful regardless, there were those in the group that would struggle to find work.

A large portion of my cohort came from top tier universities and a good chunk of them with degrees in Engineering, CS, or Math. Those folks did well and found jobs relatively easily. Career switching folks that had tech exposure through product or UX experience also did well. Folks that struggled a bit seemed to come from good but not great schools and with a major/work experience in a non-technical field.

Working together day to day I started getting this impression and then I saw it play out in hiring. The top tier folks either got jobs almost immediately or held out a few months to land at a FAANG type company. The middle of the pack seemed to find jobs at around the 3 month mark and the bottom group took as long as 6 months.

There isn't this huge pool of students from very good schools with technical degrees that allows these camps to scale up their enrollment while maintaining their initial success

Those penalties must be really harsh if Pepsi is electing to sell Dasani, a Coca-Cola product.
bcassedy··on Seeking early signals of dementia in driving and credit scores
"People pretty much couldn't go to space" "Well actually Richard Branson went to space. That puts a big hole in your people pretty much couldn't go to space argument now doesn't it!?"

The example of a single person with nearly endless resources accomplishing something does nothing to refute a point about the masses. Heck, the "pretty much" qualifier is an acknowledgement that some people got around despite their condition.

I assert that you are not discussing this in good faith and won't be engaging with you further.

Is your counterpoint really that FDR was able to go places in public?

He notoriously hid his disability with a combination of canes, braces, and family members to hold him upright and even simulate walking.

He also had a tremendous amount of power and money to force or provide his own special accommodations. Like having an army of secret service agents to help him deal with stairs.

Why are you lumping Hey in with the rest of these folks? They are orders of magnitude smaller and have some of the most customer friendly businesses around with Hey and Basecamp.

Words only have meaning because of the way people use them. See how the meaning of "literally" has changed in the last decade for an example.

To most people the term gamer does not precisely mean "one who plays games." The type of games and immersion in gaming culture are factors that people consider when labeling themselves and others "gamers."

bcassedy··on Over three billion people worldwide now play video games, study reports
Ah yes. All those game devs with their lofty salaries and excellent working conditions.
bcassedy··on Over three billion people worldwide now play video games, study reports
Likely because they count mobile games in these figures but people don't count them when talking about gaming on a dating profile.

Virtually everyone you know probably tried Candy Crush, Pokemon Go, or flappy bird. Most of them probably have at least one game like that installed on their phone today that they play on the toilet or whatever. But they don't consider themselves gamers.

It sounds like you're enjoying what you're doing so this doesn't necessarily apply to you, but the suffer now to enjoy life later mentality assumes you'll make it to your 50s.

Tomorrow isn't guaranteed so we should make time to experience life and live our values today.

bcassedy··on Oppose the Earn IT Act
Ah I see. What I meant to express was that based on the fact that there appears to be a higher preponderance of child abusers among the rich and powerful, it's unlikely that actions they take are actually "to protect the children"
bcassedy··on San Francisco apartment rent prices are dropping fast
I've spent a lot of time in Vegas and while it does get old it takes a lot longer than a weekend.

There's clubbing, lots of high end dining, shows galore, Red Rocks for hiking and climbing, each casino on the strip is a spectacle, old Vegas, shooting ranges, etc. Most of those things costs a fair bit of money but are well worth doing.

bcassedy··on Oppose the Earn IT Act
There are only a few hundred people in Congress. Even if all of them were partaking this still wouldn't be a societal impact level issue.
bcassedy··on Oppose the Earn IT Act
Child porn is a serious problem in that it is abhorrent.

I have not seen any evidence that it is a serious problem in that it has significant impact at a societal level.

These bills are not being introduced to significantly reduce child porn. They're meant to further enhance surveillance powers or earn easy political points. Any actual effect on crime is a side benefit.

Let's not forget that the same people that propose these bills are the ones hanging out at Epstein's private island.

Walmart's online store is a mess of 3rd party options now too. I went looking for hair clippers at the start of the pandemic and all I could find were no-name brands offered by third party vendors on their website.
bcassedy··on The Death of Couchsurfing?
Ehh there's a really pro ycombinator slant and ever notice how any yc announcement, hiring notice, or article quickly hits the top? They're getting a lot of value out of that stuff that helps with the VC side of things.
bcassedy··on Improve your walking technique
You mid-foot strike while walking? When I wore barefoot shoes, I could mid-foot strike while running but doing so while walking always felt extremely unnatural and I couldn't adopt it.

AHK was how I got back into programming. I wrote some scripts to help reduce RSI playing online poker and then later when I worked in a call center wrote some scripts to automate dialing my phone and macros for basic notetaking.

A clunky as it is, it is a fantastic tool.

bcassedy··on Ask HN: Mind bending books to read and never be the same as before?
If you liked Ishmael, I recommend reading The Story of B. Its subject is very similar to Ishmael but I feel that it does a better job of portraying how the us vs them is woven into the very fabric of civilization. It's also a very entertaining read.
bcassedy··on Citing revenue declines, Airbnb cuts 25% of workforce
Their 2020 revenue will likely be less than a quarter of that. And 2021 might not be much better. They have a struggle ahead.
bcassedy··on MySQL Sharding at Quora
Is Quora really big outside the US or something? I find it difficult to reconcile their scale challenges with the fact that I don't know a single person that uses Quora outside of when the come up in google search results.

Right, but he also then has a lot more incentive to keep costs down and the power to enforce some requirements and controls to keep costs down.

Even when you're insured this happens. I had a woman come into my ER room and demand payment of my full deductible. They ended up refunding me 2/3 of it about a year later.
bcassedy··on You might literally be buying trash on Amazon
I think it's interesting how the perception of Amazon is changing. Even my parents who are in their late 60s are avoiding Amazon because of counterfeiting and poor production quality.
