bcambel··on Ask HN: How do you stay focused on your 9 to 5 whilst bootstrapping a startup?
At the time I was working for a .NET consultancy firm, every morning around 6 am I was learning and coding in RoR. 1.5 h uninterrupted time every week day for 2 months makes a huge difference. Plus the weekends.

Don't forget to embrace a healthy down time. You body and mind need to relax.

bcambel··on I'm working on developing a Product, uncertain of success. Am I wasting time?
Develop customer then the product. Take a look at Lean startup by Eric Ries, search for Customer Development, read Steve Blank, read Start slow & Stay Small by Rob Walling. Talk to businesses. Get out of your computer screen. Ask their opinion. Ask them to pay you.

"I love programming, I'll open(start) a web company" (which, by the way, is one of the major causes of the high rate of infant webstartup mortality) and I think that is perfectly fine.

Looks great, I think the website needs better code highlighting with larger fonts for text and code. Definitely disqus comments will help a lot. Are you looking for guest posts ?

bcambel··on Ask HN: what was the best life/programming choice you ever made?
I don't know that much about Java world, however what I can say about Windows + .NET is you are less productive. Why ? 1. Linux > Windows ( For .NET ) 2. Python + Django/Flask are really powerful. Ruby & Rails as well. 3. You're basically writing and reading more code. Most of them is unnecessary. .NET is designed for enterprises. 4. Especially for startups, time & speed matters a lot. I also think some of the above reasons applies for the Java world as well. Fantastic OS projects though in Java world.
bcambel··on Ask HN: what was the best life/programming choice you ever made?
Ruby & Python

bcambel··on Why you would want to program at fifty (or any other age)
A great wisdom: "You don’t match your age to your job. You match your motivations to your job."[From the article]

bcambel··on Ask HN: review our startup's first job posting
> No, but I'm curious as to why you would mention this? stay on the top of the tech. Your employee's next job might require experience on MongoDb, Cassandra, Redis, etc.. And there is a lot difference using in production vs playing at home. Would you like to have a dev who only had experience with JS, ASP.NET or MSSQL on his projects ? No. And believe me as developers we learn best when we are working on things for a long time on production systems ( you're probably a dev as well, so you know these things )

> We have a lot of cash in the bank at the moment.. Great, explain this in adv. as well. You mentioned an angel investor might invest more, which means he already invested in. Make this clear, mention this, all of it. Be very open.

> don't need to offer equity Why not ? If you are making money, share some more with conditions. Offer some kind of compensation of somebody's hard work. Would you like somebody to work for you 6m vs 2y ? Offering equity of course is more complicated. You can "vest" his equity. Talk to your lawyer/advisor about this if you don't know what vesting is.

Let me clear what I mean, you need to look for more long term employees with offering more salary, giving more responsibility, placing some nice options, and this new "tech" stuff makes you imho more attractive. Much better developers, less dev time, more happy employees, successful business, more money in your pocket. This is a very crucial cycle.

Good luck Tom, if you have any more questions, don't hesitate. Cheers

> Open to the possibility of interesting side projects if you have any ideas Rather than saying a generic sentence, you might also say "Work on your side projects 4h per week" or whatever your hour constraint will be.

No future plans to use a NoSQL db ?

What do you mean by separate JS app ? Node.JS app or ASP.NET C# app with a single page ?

You mentioned your website. Which one ? The app or the front end ?

"Highly proficient with ASP.net c# development" Are you using ASP.NET 1.1 or cutting edge ASP.NET MVC ?

Request a GitHub account on the listing or CodePlex..

"are willing to pay a competitive salary to reflect this."

You're looking for your first employee, you don't offer stock options, you don't look for a great all hands developer which you'll not pay over the "competitive" salary. I believe You are calling for B/C programmers ( where A+ won't apply )

For the employee this is a risky job, if I were looking for a job, I would't apply.

I hope my tone was positive and constructive..

bcambel··on I supported App.net with $50/year, here’s why

bcambel··on Netflix: Benchmarking High Performance I/O with SSD for Cassandra on AWS
Seems like great benefits; The hi1.4xlarge configuration is about half the system cost for the same throughput. The mean read request latency was reduced from 10ms to 2.2ms. The 99th percentile request latency was reduced from 65ms to 10ms.
bcambel··on I supported App.net with $50/year, here’s why
Let's say you want to create an ultimate network. Ask for $10K per month from each member and throw a party each month which will be host by Alicia Keys, Adele and many more top notch singers in the world. There will be 100 or so members. Aren't you going to be attracted in that 100 ? Not 10 gazillion. Only 100.

Sure we can't compare this exclusive network with App.net but believe me, Twitter having gazillions of people does not add any value to me. It makes my day harder, because every day more shit is produced in Twitter and Twitter is focusing on # of people vs # of advertisement clicks. They don't care about me. This is the old T.V model and I don't have a cable at home any more.

I'm entrepreneur and a programmer. If App.Net brings in VCs, marketers, entrepreneurs and good programmers I'm in. I will pay $10-$20 p/m to be in that network. App.net will care about what their users think. They have to.

It's not about the # of people, it's about the value they create; the content they write, the links they share, the conversations they have.

I don't care if 2M 16 year old Justin Bieber fans joining to the network. No value to me.

bcambel··on PyPy - Python 3k Status #5 update

bcambel··on Github Raises $100 Million
No I am not sure and that's not the point...
bcambel··on Github Raises $100 Million
I think you're not talking about GitHub. Because I see A company which started from zero, revolutionized SCS, socialized coding. Makes a lot of cash, not from advertisement, but from an actual useful product. A Product that people love to use. I think A16Z is a very clever firm that invested in a very solid product.

GitHub has 102 employees. Which means they're already paying around $10M wage in a year and they're profitable. I bet they're at least making $20M per year right now. They're going after the enterprise market which would make them much much more cash.

Do the math. Is it really hard to pay that money back in a company like this ? Is AirBnB, Dropbox, Evernote in trouble ?

Github is not troubled.
