bbuffone··on List of YC companies, ordered by response time from EC2
Response time data is useless without other data:

- Where are the monitors located?

- Where are the sites located?

- How was the site monitored? Did they account for DNS lookup and connection times in this time? 8ms for skysheet.com makes me think no?

- Are error times rolled into these times? Errors typically will respond quickly.

Having built www.yottaa.com, we worked hard to provide data that users can easily take actions against. In order to that understanding the questions above is important.

bbuffone··on Ask HN: Best way to block an EC2-hosted scraper?
You can simply contact Amazon AWS and report them. Having run yottaa.com live for the last 6 months our monitoring nodes have been reported and if they are causing problems we fix them.

We are try to provide valuable service to people and would want to know that we are causing problems. We have implemented the ability to work with robots.txt files.

If the nodes are not from a legitimate service then they will be shutdown.

bbuffone··on Windows Phone 7 development from the perspective of an iOS developer
Two weeks ago, I got the samsung focus to replace my iphone4. The phone is really really good. The author is right about the tiles approach. It is a nice change from the app model of the other phones. I can see all my contacts, feeds from facebook and linked in in one view. It's even better than desktop experiences.

People have complained that the hardware is plasticy and cheap, but after using the iphone4 over a 2 month period and seeing the glass screen smash. I prefer the light feel; plus most people covert their phones with a case and they all feel the same after that.

Complaints on the phone:

The browser isn't as good as the iphone; change between pages isn't as nice and the back & forward is a pain. Rendering is also not as good.

The zune navigation system was better than the windows mobile. In zune you could navigate up and down the system by clicking the title of the current screen to go back in Playlists click "Playlist" to go back to music, click "Music" to return to the main screen. This was super convient because navigation could be done with one hand. In the Mobile OS it would more on a backwards only system that requires using the phones "back" button which is at the bottom of the phone. I find it not as easy operate as the zune, but the same as the iphone.

bbuffone··on Happy New Year in Your Time Zone - What's your resolution?
* does it bother you when you say stock phrases such as "HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!"?

No, it allows me to simply respond with a stock answer and move on with my day.

* does it make sense to have resolutions once a year at the same time as everyone else?

Yes, Life is long. Having a sprint last a year makes sense. It is also easier for people to reflect and major changes in their life on natural boundaries like a new years, 20th, 30th, 40th... birthday.

* what exactly is the new year a celebration of for most people? The fact that humanity is still here? Or perhaps the making of resolutions? Something religious?

I will speak for most people; they are celebrating the past years accomplishments, friends they made, places they have gone, things they have experienced...

* what do studies say about how effective the making of resolutions is and whether they improve society overall?

It is not a time for research... it is a time for drinking late into the night while coding your next project.

2010 kicked ass, but now it is on to the next one!!!

bbuffone··on Ask HN: A possible Delicious Alternative?
I have never had more then a 5 favorites, unless it is something I go to everyday (google analytics) then it doesn't get added.

Also browsers have great autocomplete. If I want to go to hackers news. I hit "n" in the url bar and I am there.

bbuffone··on Ask HN: A possible Delicious Alternative?
I never got the whole bookmarking craze. Why is this useful? Google has every link on the web and you can easily search for things. It always seemed easier just go to google and search again then try to bookmark, tag and use another search to find a link you may never use again.
bbuffone··on My Case Against Code Comments
I am currently getting a "Error establishing a database connection" for the page. I hope where ever that happens; there might be a comment in the code explaining why.
bbuffone··on Why TV Lost (2009)
TV and the way it works didn't lose. I live in beijing for extended periods of time with nothing more than an internet connection and I can't wait to get home to watch TV, Movies, Sports...

The way TV works is far better than the internet was, which is why the internet has adapted more to the TV model then the other way.

1.) Produced content is better than un-produced content -> This holds true on the internet. Hackers News itself is successful because it is produced. Even though the community produces the content it is still produced. I can also find a million @pg - "I focus on the content" comments.

2.) Scheduled release of content -> One of the good things about being 12 hours ahead in beijing is that I wake up and all the content is ready for me to consume in the morning the rest of the day, provides little new content allow me to focus easier on my daily task then be interrupted by this tweet or news article. Sure you want to watch what you want when you want but we knew then 30 years ago when the VHS recorders came up.

3.) Large screens are better than small -> This is definitely true, watching content on little screens isn't that enjoyable, neither is watch horrible quality videos on youtube. Online content catchs up in terms of quality people will watch it on large screen TVs.

4.) 500 channels and nothing on -> I browse about 10 websites out of the Millions on the internet, compare this to TV where I watch 20 channels out of the 500 that is on my TV.

Seems like TV and the way it works is being "Copied and Localized" to the internet.

bbuffone··on Google and Microsoft Cheat on Slow-Start. Should You?
We have been measuring google's "reachability" performance and it is quite amazing. The results of their tuning is that they can achieve downloading of their initial HTML in under ~250 milliseconds and many locations under 100 ms. The other thing the data shows is the standard deviation on the download times are very small making the site consistently load fast.

bbuffone··on Real Life Super Heroes
My first reaction is that it makes me want to be a real-life super villain. Unfortunately for me, I have neither the time or the evilness to do so. Unfortunately for them, there are others that will have both.
bbuffone··on Woz misquoted 'Almost every app that I have is better on the iPhone'
"misquoted" != "mistakenly quoted". People intentionally misquote people to further their agenda or to drive readership.
bbuffone··on In the Grip of the New Monopolists
"Is there some reason we have to have brands?"

This questions is very odd. "Is there some reason we have to have brands?" is the same as asking "Is there some reason we need Nouns in english?"

Nouns/brands allow people to communicate effectively with one another... who they are going to be involved in... who to trust... who to avoid...

The opposite of having brands is... Foo-Roulette, where everything you do is met with guys randomly showing you their cocks.

bbuffone··on Facebook Finds A New Way To Liberate Your Gmail Contact Data
People tollerate them because they won they social space. The winners always get free passes on things that only matter to a few people. Most people dont think about getting their data out. Where would they put it?
bbuffone··on NY Blogger Criticized For Posting Photos of Teen Vandals
"the first result in Google will be the post with their names and their foolish youthful actions..."

Actually it won't be... Google works like the world does. If these kids were to do more valuable things with there time and be recognized for that, then these pages with fall in their ranking.

bbuffone··on Ask HN: Etiquette at conferences?
Private events - if you do feel compelled go to... The best advise and one that works most of the time is; act like you belong there. Don't stop at the front and ask questions or give someone a reason to talk to you, just walk in. If someone looks at you, and they might be asking for invites just nod and keep walking. It a tech party not backstage at a Justin Bieber concert.

Though having been to many private tech parties both invited and not; I realized they are fairly boring. The best ones are the bigger conference parties with a concert. Book release parties are the worst.

Crash the ones that have free food and booze, if you do. Good general advice is always have a drink/plate in your hand as it is the simplest and a polite way to leave a conversation. "need to get a refill, talk to you later"

bbuffone··on Marijuana Legalization Fails in California
Doesn't that in-of-itself say something about the legalization.

I see that things like this fail not because people are against pot, but because everyone has the same feeling, "it's fine, just not in my back yard".

bbuffone··on Apple's responsibility as a superpower
The best thing about that is they can port the game and charge everyone again. Unlike console games that cost $60 dollars. Phone games are a couple dollars so people will pay that again.

They can even out source the development as there is a perfect spec of what to build (original game)

bbuffone··on Apple's responsibility as a superpower
I have no worries about this, I can throw out my $199 iPhone and buy a new phone. The same apps I use (Planets vs Zombies, actually that is about it) will be available on the new phone shortly. Phones and its OS are dispensable. that is the great thing about them. As long as it can make a call and receive data the real utility of the phone will always be available.

The rest of it is just entertainment.

bbuffone··on Tips on giving a big speech
Having talked at many conferences there are a bunch things I do:

# Practice, seems simple but when I don't then it will not be as good as when I do.

# Go early and talk to a couple of the people that will be watching the talk. This calms me down as I now have a couple people on myside. It backfired once when I started talking to someone and they turned out to be a jackass, but I moved onto someone else.

# Use the people I talked to as my eye contact, there now friends I should be able to look at them

# Take everything out of my pockets and anything I might start fiddling with off.

# Slide Remote is key as you can interact with audience better.

# Simple slides - one phrase or simple list is usually best, for tech talks I write a snippet on the slide

# Pause and Breathe, it may seem like a long time since the previous word but its not. This tends to be why people start adding filler words (aww, like...)

bbuffone··on Is It Time to Retire the Football Helmet?
You are trying to remove the initiation of contact to the head. This does a couple things 1.) Simplifies and remove ambiguity from any call. 2.) Reduce the initial impact to the head.

Is it going to eliminate all head injures no, but is a clear way to define a rule.

bbuffone··on Is It Time to Retire the Football Helmet?
The solution is simple - sports should ban ALL hits to the head. Zero tolerance, it is uncalled for and brings nothing to the game
bbuffone··on The Tools You Really Need to Maintain Your Home
I think list varies with the phase of home ownership

- Buying a new house - his list is probably good

- Renting an apartment - his list is probably good

- Buying a pre-owned house - I needed way more tools - ladder, tool belt is essential, box saw, hand saw, wire cutters, safety glasses, circular saw, mini vans (fold down seats) are as "good" as truck for carrying stuff, hand sander, saw horses, outlet tester

As time has gone on we have needed less and less tools, but having them around makes everything easier.

bbuffone··on Ask HN: Viral Marketing
This is pretty cool me and my daughter are trying to break it.

My daughter had the following suggestions:

- Be able to spank the guy that fixes the setup

- Be able to it hit bob in different areas

- Sound effects

- Compete to go next

edit: Waiting for the machine to be fixed is more exciting than hitting it.

edit #2: Make it like the saw movie just with pinatas

bbuffone··on To truly become rich, you need to stop acting like it
I don't know about this. You really aren't enlightening people by saying stop spending money and you will have more money. People aren't stupid. This is the same kind of story as people are fat because they don't know what kind of foods to eat. It's just not true. Everyone know what kind of food to eat, they just don't.

I once went to a nutrionist and she ask what I eat for breakfast; I told her and she said "you know how many calories were in that bagel?" and I told her. She looked puzzled, then I told her "I wasn't fat because I was stupid"

Behaviors with food and even money are learned early on and until people choose to unlearn them; they will be fat and poor.

bbuffone··on MySpace Unveils New Logo
Is myspace trying to get out of a record contract? This logo is terrible. Most people aren't going to get the symbol is "space".
bbuffone··on Ask HN:interest in api where given a Twitter login, you get their interests?
Seems like a cool service, do you utilize only the "#" tags or all the words in a tweet?
bbuffone··on Ask HN: Do startups need analysts? What can this 26-year-old semi-generalist do?
There are roles at companies for these skill but they are not a newly founded startup. Once the company has reached about 30 people there will be a need for more generalized skills typically in the business/sales side of the company as sales engineers/consultants.
bbuffone··on Would You Wear a Camcorder on Your Ear?
"If you’re obsessed with sharing your life in video..."

Are the people wearing this - sharing their live or the lives of those around them?

After watching the video it seemed that the only thing shared was the brief glimpse of the people which passed by.
