bbrks··on APT tilting train: A laughing stock that changed the world
Small world :) I live there and got to go on board the APT with my Grandad when I was younger, as well as run the model railway at the Heritage Centre with him.

bbrks··on Show HN: Fileloupe for Mac
I have to say the website really does sell the product well. It's everything 'Preview' should be and more.

It looks very polished and is really, really fast (opened a project of ~11,000 files on my old 2010 MBP with spinning disk and it could instantly filter and search).

I congratulate you on shipping a piece of software that surpasses Apple's standards. :)

I've installed the app on all of my machines, work and personal within 10 minutes of visiting the website. Great job!

bbrks··on Ask HN: If marijuana is legalized, what happens to people jailed for possession?
They still committed a crime (at the time of arrest/trial), so they will complete their sentence.
bbrks··on Dynamic message of the day (~/.motd) generator for Mac and Linux
Please consider putting the animated GIF or screenshot from the git repo's readme on the website.

It's asking me to pipe a curl into bash without me knowing what it is :)

What is it being used for?
bbrks··on How is Javascript used within the Spotify desktop application?
I can't speak for Windows, but HiDPI Spotify works great on OS X.

bbrks··on Ask HN: Which OS License you try to avoid? And why?
I rarely encounter software that isn't licensed under the big four mentioned above, so not really nope :)
bbrks··on Ask HN: Which OS License you try to avoid? And why?
MIT, BSD or Apache are fine. I try to avoid GPL as it tends to bring up more issues than it solves with the derived works clause.

bbrks··on Ask HN: What are the most useful Chrome extensions?
StartHQ looks really cool, but I've just tried setting my password and got a generic 'password incorrect' error.

My password was 100 chars (mixed) in length, but I also tried shorter ones, down to 15 chars. Now for some reason, all starthq.com pages are blank so I can't reset any credentials.

Any ideas?

Edit: Fixed by clearing localstorage on the domain. Angular really didn't like whatever I did!

bbrks··on Google Earth Pro is now free
Maybe in NY, but for the majority of the UK Bing provides way better imagery.[1]

bbrks··on Student fury over 'impossible' economics exam
I'm currently in my final year of university too (not at Sheffield) and I was amazed at how many announcements had to be made during the recent exams (2 weeks ago) to correct questions, some multiple ones per paper.

If it's only a 3-4 page exam, with only 3-5 questions in total, they should probably have been read through and attempted by a couple of lecturers beforehand.

What made it even worse was that I am at a Welsh university, so announcements have to be made both in English and in Welsh. Disrupting anybody doing a different exam and causing hassle for the students taking the incorrect one.

bbrks··on Shadershop – programming GPU shaders by direct manipulation
Submitted a few pull requests, hopefully they get accepted!

Definitely a very cool tool.

bbrks··on TeX Live 2014
Err, I'm not sure why but I just opened your link at work, and it is a page full of Goatse images... I thought I'd seen the last of that 10 years ago.
bbrks··on OS X Yosemite
I've just tried it on my 2014 15" rMBP and I'd say it's too unstable and buggy for use as your primary OS. I'm now back to Mavericks.
bbrks··on IPv6-only Virtual Servers
Genuinely curious, why would a cheap virtual server ever need 4 billion IPv6 addresses?

Why not just give out a /64? (254 addresses) which is the minimum amount of addresses you can assign in IPv6.

bbrks··on The Inside Story of Oculus Rift
Sidenote: wired.com articles have a truly annoying UX error. The slider/gallery goes full screen when the user presses 'F', which hides the article.

Not very helpful when you want to find something written in the article by Ctrl+F!

bbrks··on Putting the Chat into Snapchat
Snapchat has long been unstable on the Nexus 4. For almost a year now.

bbrks··on Danish government builds Minecraft world of Denmark from geodata
> Each blocks represents a ground area of 50 square metres. The raw height data is stored in metres and must be scaled down to fit within the 256 block height limit in Minecraft. A maximum height of 2 500 metres was chosen, which means Ben Nevis, appears just over 128 blocks high. Although this exaggerates the real-world height, it preserves low-lying coastal features such as Bournemouth's cliffs, adding interest to the landscape.

It seems to be a 1:50 scale.

It is headless yeah, I have other devices to play media files from it through the network.
bbrks··on Odroid-U3: A quad-core 1.7GHz ARM single-board computer for $59
I found it to be pretty much the same. Initial set up was very convoluted compared to the Pi. Community resources were scarce and I basically had to fudge an Arch install without much guidance.

However it has superseded my Pi (HTTP/Torrent/SMB/DLNA Media server) which was running Raspbian and it's a lot faster at doing it.

bbrks··on Why is Atom closed source?
Git is a distributed VCS though. It wouldn't really matter unless your only copy is on Git and isn't cloned anywhere. (In which case, set up a remote repository on Bitbucket/wherever)

If you're relying on GitHub for Issues/Wiki, then fair enough I suppose. Not as easy to get that data somewhere else.
