bboylen··on Ask HN: Burnt-out, directionless but want to turn it around
I think what you described is the case for the vast majority of people, I certainly feel the same for myself.

I do believe in outliers however. Some people really do seem to just be wired differently. Problems can be caused though when average people take advice from the Elon Musks of the world and burn themselves out trying to work 90 hour weeks.

bboylen··on Demystifying Database Performance for Developers
How might one go about this?

Do you have any relevant articles?

bboylen··on You are not Google (2017)
For a non senior engineer it is very likely the truth to be fair
bboylen··on 37% of jobs in the United States can be performed entirely at home
This is true historically but the culture does seem to be moving away from the idea of it being OK to date coworkers. I know a lot of younger people (like me) would be quite nervous about the prospect of coming onto someone in the workplace. Even with good intentions there is potential for miscommunication or making someone uncomfortable.
bboylen··on Intel removes Xinjiang references from shareholder letter
Haven't there been some recent reports that the U.S. might actually not fare so well against China in direct conflict?

I don't think it would come to that at any rate, at least not in an all out war sense

bboylen··on Ask HN: How to optimize your career for happiness?
A child born today in the west has a better life expectancy than any other period in human history. Despite all the global challenges, we still live in the most prosperous age ever
bboylen··on What happens to developers who never go into management?
What is the best way to develop engineering & troubleshooting capabilities?

Definitely seems a lot less clear cut than just practicing a language

bboylen··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2021)
Hi there Warren,

The app looks pretty cool and as a meditator I would definitely be interested in applying. Can you clarify what your email is? I'm not sure why it is scrambled as such

bboylen··on AWS is playing chess, Cloudflare is playing Go
Too bad they shot themselves in the foot with the cybertruck design. Don't get me wrong I think it's funny/cool that a car with that design is out there, but it just won't be able to eat up the high-end performance truck market even if it has insane torque.
bboylen··on McKinsey never told the FDA it was working for both the FDA and opioid makers
Of course people who choose to work at McKinsey in the first place feel good about it. Says more about them than it does about McKinsey being moral
bboylen··on Turmoil at Bezos' Blue Origin: Talent exodus after CEO push for return to office
So this shows why flexibility is important, so you can satisfy the different preferences of employees.

From the article, it sounds like the CEO wanted to get rid of remote work all together.

bboylen··on Partisan attachment: How politics is changing dating and relationships (2020)
Yes this is very true

As long as both people are open minded and try to assume positive intention (unless proved otherwise) I think differences are just fine.

I don't think I could date someone who could only accept the party line, whether D or R. It astonishes me the arrogance of people who think they have the world completely figured out and know the best solution for everything.

bboylen··on Ask HN: What Apple alternatives are you switching to?
Yeah I am considering switching to an iPhone.

A big kicker was opening the default Weather app on my Samsung Galaxy S9 and seeing an inappropriate ad that took up 1/3 of the screen. Absolutely shameful that they would be so desperate for cash to include such ad space in their flagship phone.

Although the recent news about Apple has me questioning the switch...

bboylen··on Big Oil methane emissions: ‘significant gap’ between reality and reporting
What?

How on earth would the government seizing control of one of the largest industries in the country make us more of a democracy?

We would then be in company with countries such as Venezuela and Saudi Arabia, famously democratic countries

bboylen··on Millionaires call for an emergency tax on billionaires
And what if the stock valuation crashes before they can pay the bill? On hook for money they don't have?

Seems almost impossible to implement

bboylen··on Millionaires call for an emergency tax on billionaires
What would this policy look like?

Government seizing shares of companies from people if their valuation rises too much?

bboylen··on Dating in Delhi when you're poor
Damn thats crazy. Had no idea this was a thing over there.

So different from my experience in the US

bboylen··on Dating in Delhi when you're poor
If you can't have a fun conversation over coffee or dinner you probably arent compatible
bboylen··on Early Retirement (2006)
How easy is it to find these positions though
bboylen··on Uber, Lyft drivers strike in Los Angeles
Don't Uber and Lyft lose money? I doubt there is an easy way to operate much more ethically and also make enough money to be sustainable
bboylen··on Regarding Michael Pollan’s New Book This Is Your Mind on Plants
I actually do meditate and agree :)

But I've been pretty bad about the practice lately and need to commit more. It has helped me a lot, but there are a lot of benefits/mind states I haven't even scratched the surface of

bboylen··on Regarding Michael Pollan’s New Book This Is Your Mind on Plants
I wish I was more impressed by all the shallow, mundane experiences in my day to day life
bboylen··on US-Canada heatwave 'virtually impossible' without warming
https://pix11.com/news/local-news/power-outages-new-york-new... https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/30/nyregion/nyc-energy-alert...

I don't mean to blame green energy for the grid not being able to handle the recent heat wave. But I do blame the closing of the Indian Point Nuclear power plant. Nuclear is a fantastic source of carbon neutral energy but plants are being shut down in both New York and California, without alternative energy sources in place to pick up the slack

bboylen··on US-Canada heatwave 'virtually impossible' without warming
People don't want the new normal to be like in California and New York where rolling blackouts are the new normal due to unreliable green energy
bboylen··on DoorDash removing 1-year cliff for equity grants
I don't think it is super easy. I think it is doable though
bboylen··on DoorDash removing 1-year cliff for equity grants
What city are you in, if I may ask?
bboylen··on DoorDash removing 1-year cliff for equity grants
As a self taught guy transitioning from chemical engineering, I hope its not too hard. Starting my search in a couple months
bboylen··on Ask HN: How do SMBs afford such expensive software engineers in the US?
I was wondering too - thanks for asking
bboylen··on The scientists hired by big oil who predicted the climate crisis long ago
Nothing has expanded the human lifespan more than petrochemicals. A LOT of medicine/medical machines are made with petrochemicals
