bberrry··on Lessons learned from rewriting code
Ah, sorry, I completely failed to realize that was the question being asked. :)
bberrry··on Lessons learned from rewriting code
To be honest I do think `== false` is clearer than an inconspicuous exclamation mark but I don't use it.
bberrry··on Lessons learned from rewriting code
I mean, it's the same thing as extracting the boolean expression into a function and calling that in the if statement. It's also easy to imagine a quite long expression that would benefit from breaking into two or three descriptive names. It's a good tool for your own sake when coding, to not get the logic tangled up.
bberrry··on Lessons learned from rewriting code
Because it gives you the opportunity to descriptively name the expression, sparing others from parsing it mentally.
bberrry··on Julian Assange: Wikileaks co-founder jailed over bail breach
Why are you quoting a sentence that's not in the article? Nice way to appropriate BBCs credibility to your conspiracy theory.
bberrry··on The new features of Fortran 2018 [pdf]
What's the degree of backward compatibility with FORTRAN releases? I imagine most FORTRAN codebases as being huge and old, so it makes me wonder how many can adopt the latest versions.
bberrry··on Show HN: Make your site’s pages instant in one minute
I hope I never end up in your dystopian part of the world.
bberrry··on Show HN: NimForum – A lightweight alternative to Discourse
Thanks, this is the first thing I've seen actually implemented in Nim. Will be interesting too look through some actual code.
bberrry··on From Java to Kotlin and Back Again
An article about Java's warts written with the same pettyness as the author would probably be the length of a small novel.
bberrry··on I've Paid $18,000 to a $24,000 Student Loan, and I Still Owe $24,000
Why don't more people take state subsidized loans then? Seems like a nobrainer.
bberrry··on YouTube Kids Is Going to Release a Whitelisted, Non-Algorithmic Version of App
As far as I know Youtube Kids is still unavailable outside the US. Anyone aware of a workaround to get it on my iPad?
bberrry··on Playing Video Games with My Son Isn’t What I Thought It Would Be
Find some sheep as quickly as possible, then you can construct beds and "skip" the night. You won't be bothered by monsters again until you venture into dark caves.
bberrry··on Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+
You blasting the Pixel 2 for having a worse camera seems to indicate that you have no idea what you're talking about (likely on the other points as well).

The Pixel 2 has the highest rated camera of all smartphones (https://www.dxomark.com/google-pixel-2-reviewed-sets-new-rec...)

bberrry··on Show HN: Hacker News Classics
Tomte is Swedish for "Santa", which seems fitting.
bberrry··on Picture of a Single Atom Wins Science Photo Contest
Thank you so much!
bberrry··on Picture of a Single Atom Wins Science Photo Contest
Gorgeous photo in so many ways. I'm unable to dig up a high-res version. Anyone else having more luck?
bberrry··on Kotlin 1.2.20 released
I love Kotlin, it's been such a breath of fresh air at work. I hope it continues to gain adoption in backend services and not only Android, because it definitely shines at both.
bberrry··on No evidence to support link between violent video games and behaviour

Is this game conditioning me to be rapist?
Oh come on. The lengths you took that to, when applied to anything, will result in insane conclusions.
bberrry··on PyPy2.7 and PyPy3.5 v5.10 dual release
Yay, finally a Pypy3.5 release with a binary for Windows. This was basically the final thing I've been missing in Python 3 since switching from 2.
bberrry··on Zeta Global acquires Disqus (YC S07)
Thanks, just what I've been looking for
bberrry··on YouTube says it will crack down on bizarre videos targeting children
That's complete bunk. I was fluent in English by the age of 7-8 entirely from having watched a ton of TCC (a British kids channel) on my own. I'm sure adult aid helps, but it is in no way necessary.

I'm from Sweden btw

bberrry··on Show HN: Reddit’s favorite learning books, from 3.5B comments
Thanks, looks great!
bberrry··on When did software go off the rails?
> >If you think that software hasn't advanced much, simply use the software from 10 or 20 years ago, and see if you can stand the experience.

> I still use Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7 whenever I can. It's faster to startup and use than any of the versions that came afterwards based on .NET. The built-in effects are a bit outdated, but it still runs most Photoshop compatible plugins.

> And I still run Windows 2000 in an isolated offline VM for some of my work. Even emulated, it's blistering fast on modern day hardware. The entire OS runs great in less RAM than a Blogger tab (assuming the article's numbers about 500MB - 750MB RAM are correct).

> There is some excellent and efficient new software being made (Sublime Text and Alfred spring to mind), but please, don't give me another Electron-based 'desktop' app.

Ha, I too keep Paint Shop Pro 7 around for the reasons you mentioned.

bberrry··on The e-mail Larry Page should have written to James Damore
It baffles me how this rebuttal is convincing to anyone. Damore argued group differences are in part responsible for the relatively fewer women in tech. I can't see how that over-arching point has been refuted here, no matter how snarky the response.
bberrry··on COVFEFE Act
You know he must've been giggling as he came up with this.

In addition to the uncharacteristic legislative humor, it's also a good idea.

bberrry··on Why Google’s firing terrifies social conservatives so much
What statements in particular are you calling false? Genuinely curious.
bberrry··on Why Google’s firing terrifies social conservatives so much
I'm skeptical about the benefits (and underlying assumptions) of "affirmative action" diversity hires but I certainly wouldn't classify myself as socially conservative. There are so many loaded terms on these subjects that needlessly and counterproductively labels people and those labels come with a lot of baggage.
bberrry··on Why some of the best developers keep quitting
You can't know that reliably, but the recruitment process typically involves meeting the team you are being considered for, which is at least something. You do however have excellent intel on your current situation, telling you it's time to move on.

Perhaps I should re-phrase it to "most knowledgable person in the room", since there will always be a lot of new things to learn when switching jobs.

bberrry··on Why some of the best developers keep quitting
I definitely try to take the mantra "never be the smartest person in the room" to heart.

It has been a fairly decent indicator of how enjoyable I've found working those particular roles.

bberrry··on Cheap Beijing Flights With a Dangerous Catch
Is 31B a reference I'm missing? It didn't come up in the article body.
