bberrry··on On being tired
Is there any research to back that claim up?
bberrry··on Don’t call it a comeback: Java is still champ
Kotlin solved that in a good way IMO. That alone makes it worth switching
bberrry··on Supreme Court limits EPA’s power to cut emissions
Please be sarcastic
bberrry··on NeRF: An eventual successor for deepfakes?
It takes some level of skill to produce a convincing Photoshopped image.
bberrry··on React Native 0.69
Is this a joke or did they just forget to provide a justification for _why_ 0ver should be used?
bberrry··on Ask HN: What's the coolest website you know?
This was the first page that popped into my head as well.
bberrry··on Stop Interviewing with Leet Code
Being able to quickly come up with an efficient algorithm to a complex problem is not a "pointless brainteaser".
bberrry··on I hate Spring (2014)
Taking a dependency as part of composition is quite different from being "globally accessible" in my opinion.
bberrry··on Countering threats from North Korea
> These groups' activity has been publicly tracked as Operation Dream Job and Operation AppleJeus.

Following those links yield these two documents, which both have "Attribution" sections. Presumably some of these tell-tale signs were identified in the ongoing exploitation.

bberrry··on “Sustainability with Rust” post misleading about Go
I urge you to look into Javas new ZGC. It's a massive achievement, having only <1ms pauses even on TB sized heaps. Go:s GC can't hold a candle to it in terms of low consistent latency.
bberrry··on “Sustainability with Rust” post misleading about Go
I'd like to add the recent addition of ZGC as a massive benefit the JVM. Pause times always measured in microseconds regardless of heap size. No other GC:ed language has that capability as far as I know.
bberrry··on Meritocracy Is Bad
How many surgeons do you want operating on a patient? How many pilots should hold the stick? Politics might be particularly suitable for more distributed power but I'd say that's an exception.
bberrry··on Meritocracy Is Bad
For some reason this idea that meritocracy is undesirable has been making the rounds recently. I haven't heard any proposed alternatives that would be at all viable in a society where we want critical roles to be performed by competent people. Do we really want incompetent people running things because they will botch their attempts at being unethical? It certainly seems like the author is making that argument.

Yes, we don't want an ever increasing wealth gap but dismantling meritocracy strikes me as the worst possible way to deal with that.

bberrry··on The Hitchhiker's Guide to Kotlin
Why would you use companion objects for loggers? The logging library should only create one instance when you do getLogger({name or class}).
bberrry··on Is aging inevitable?
Thanks for flagging his lunacy. I can't take anything he writes seriously after that.
bberrry··on Sweden’s Northvolt raises $2.8B to supercharge EV battery output
Forgive my brazen armchairing but I question whether it's the right move to go all-in with Li-ion batteries at this time. Both solid state and Aluminium-graphene technologies seem around the corner and are extremely promising.
bberrry··on Scala 3.0
Text blocks?
bberrry··on This is Real, That's Not
What's more, the interest rate is practically free and you can take 25 years to pay them off if you want. Students are not seen as desperate marks to be exploited.
bberrry··on This is Real, That's Not
There is literally no tuition in Sweden. The loans are for rent and general cost of living. You can have literally zero means and still go to university in another city.
bberrry··on GitHub is working on renaming default branch from “master”
master is just another branch in git, so trunk is an incorrect description.
bberrry··on Firefox 76
Been using Pushbullet for years to send tabs between devices.
bberrry··on Ad blocking with Raspberry Pi and Pi-hole
Thank you! I'll give it a try
bberrry··on Ad blocking with Raspberry Pi and Pi-hole
I wish it were more effective in removing Youtube ads on my kids' iPads, but I understand it's a tall order. At least it gets rid of ads in most other apps.
bberrry··on Show HN: Tablist – a chrome extension to copy and paste lists of open tabs
How do you manage the windows? Opening other windows is how I've lost open tabs before, so now I keep a single Firefox window.
bberrry··on Show HN: Tablist – a chrome extension to copy and paste lists of open tabs
The other day I had over 800. I went on a closing spree and whittled them down to ~150 that I'm _sure_ I'll get around to reading any day now.
bberrry··on FortressOne: Quake Team Fortress (1996) mod still under active development
Oh wow, QWTF was my absolute first contact with online gaming and it is so dear to my heart. They were such innocent times. People asking strangers on servers to join their clan and I remember cherishing my clan tag so much. I was on dialup and didn't start using the mouse for a least a couple of months, but like I did, innocent times and no one was whining or rude.
bberrry··on Ask HN: What were the things you did that made the biggest impact at your work?
As a firefoxer and tab-hoarder, with more than 200+ open as I write this, thank you!
bberrry··on Goodbye, Clean Code
Which book are you referring to?
bberrry··on Ask HN: What's the best setup for ad blocking and tracker blocking?
Does this setup block youtube ads on iPads for example?
bberrry··on Owning a Pet Is Good for Well-Being
It's likely quite individual but personally I feel like I am less satisfied with life now that I have young children due to them dominating the agenda and life in general. I am however expecting kids to "pay off" in the happiness department in old age. I would imagine having no family at that stage in life would be quite bleak.
