bbayer··on Show HN: Create thousands of videos from a Google sheet
It looks neat product. Wonder which technology is used to render videos.
bbayer··on Boeing 737 Max Simulators Are in High Demand, But Flawed
Certification process is generic enough to apply it to different types of aircrafts. There is no specific requirements for different subsystems introduced by manufacturer. Simulation fidelity is tested against real world data but it is not possible to collect data for every condition that might occur during flight. You may refer to FAA FSS Level-D QTG document for further reference. [1]

bbayer··on Show HN: PiShot – capture high-speed strobe images using a Raspberry Pi camera
I wasn't aware there are $5 Pi cameras out there. Repo doesn't contain which cameras are used. Can someone point me out?
bbayer··on Vim.wasm
In this example, author implements custom UI layer as it is described in readme "WebAssembly frontend for Vim is implemented as a new GUI frontend". Input and output is handled in JS side but core functionality resides on WebAssembly part. I am not familiar with Vim but probably I/O is well seperated from logic code so it might be easier to modify it to work on browser but I actually don't know how it is working for other applications.
bbayer··on Ask HN: One-person SaaS apps that are profitable?
It looks very promising. What text-to-speech engine are you using?
bbayer··on Python overtakes JavaScript as most questioned language on StackOverflow
One exception is GUI applications. There are Python bindings to popular GUI frameworks but my experience it doesn't always feel like 100% pythonic. Python is not perfect choice if you want to deploy your application as binary. Actually it is downside of all interpreted languages.
bbayer··on Aphantasia: 'My mind's eye is blind'
I am surprised that nobody mentioned pineal gland. As Descardes, it is where soul sits. Pineal gland also called "third eye". Pineal gland gets light information from skin and eyes and produces melatonin. Melatonin is a serotonin-derived hormone that modulates sleep patterns. People who has aphantasia also report that not having dreams. Calcification of pineal gland is proved scientifically and mostly caused by fluoride. Aphantasia might be related to this.
bbayer··on How I use my Raspberry Pis to help me work on with my side projects
Can you name the alternatives?
bbayer··on Ask HN: What Engine Is Better for games: Unity, Unreal or Unigine?
It really depends on your need, budget and skill set of your colleagues. Unity is easy to learn and provides better support for mobile. Unreal has better rendering capabilities if you want to develop for PC and consoles but has more steep learning curve. I haven't used Unigine but it looks promising for serious games and simulation. So every engine has its pros and cons.
bbayer··on Knative – Kubernetes-based platform to manage modern serverless workloads
Yeah, you are right. My bad.
bbayer··on Knative – Kubernetes-based platform to manage modern serverless workloads
Digital Ocean is about to ship similar product.

bbayer··on Ask HN: What has been your most rewarding job or project and why?
I have started to make games. I have teached myself Unity and started making casual games. Most satisfying thing about game development is presenting something fun to people and getting positive feedbacks as return. I have learned a lot in terms of game dev, gamification, monetization, publishing during process.
bbayer··on Distributed SQLite for Go applications
You are right. That is why I said "relatively". It is relatively high for my setup.($5 linode with 2gb ram that runs 4 instance gunicorn server.)
bbayer··on Distributed SQLite for Go applications
sqlite is fantastic piece of software. I am using it in every single side projects of mine. I can not describe how I satisfied with results even in relatively high load (300K pages/day on $5 Linode VPS). I found that most of time using a full featured RDBMS is not necessary depending on use case.(I am doing mostly reads)
bbayer··on Stellar Protocol: A Federated Model for Internet-Level Consensus (2016) [pdf]
Stellar is one of the robust and undervalued asset. It has great potential and I think this year we will see lots of intereting things built on top of Stellar.
bbayer··on Turning web design mockups into code with Deep Learning
This is great example of deep learning that is applied to real world problem. I am just curious if that can be done more easier and more robust by using simple image processing algorithms? Box detection and OCR can work well and may produce better results with different types of mockups. Sometimes I feel like we are making problems even more complicated trying to solve them by using popular concepts.
bbayer··on Ask HN: What are best tools for web scraping?
I am really surprised nobody mentioned pyspider. It is simple, has a web dashboard and can handle JS pages. It can store data to a database of your choice. It can handle scheduling, recrawling. I have used it to crawl Google Play. 5$ Digital Ocean VPS with pyspider installed on it could handle millions of pages crawled, processed and saved to a database.

bbayer··on Reverse Engineering a 433MHz Motorised Blind RF Protocol
Nice read but I would use rtl-sdr and SDR tools to reverse engineer this kind of stuff. There are lots of good tools can be used for this purpose in SDR community like this one:

bbayer··on Ask HN: Passive income ideas for solo developers?
You can find lots of ideas just checking http://flippa.com You can even buy an established website from there and try to grow revenue but it would be wise to be careful about metrics provided by sellers though.
bbayer··on Predicting Hacker News article success with neural networks and TensorFlow
"Predicting Hacker News article success with neural networks and TensorFlow" has success probability of 49.6%. I am wondering if OP tried several options to come up with this title.
bbayer··on Consider a Dell Optiplex FX160 Instead of a Raspberry Pi
It can power 2.5 inches usb HDD with no issues. All you have to do is get an official power adaptor and set max_usb_current to true.
bbayer··on Ask HN: Building a side project that makes money. Where to start?
Thanks for the reply. Did you face any issues during crawling process like access restrictions. If you share your practice I will be appreciated.

bbayer··on Tacotron: A Fully End-to-End Text-To-Speech Synthesis Model
Initialization is random according to abstract.

  > Given <text, audio> pairs, the model can be trained completely from scratch with random initialization.
bbayer··on Tacotron: A Fully End-to-End Text-To-Speech Synthesis Model
I think implementation can be done with TensorFlow but hardest part is to provide relevant training set to model.

bbayer··on Ask HN: What is the biggest untapped opportunity for startups?
Lucid dreaming is not part of normal sleep cycle. It reduces deep sleep time and most people report that after long time with lucid dreams they feel exhausted and they feel like they haven't slept at all. So, in the longterm it is harmful.
