bbarn··on California law enforcement misused state databases more than 7k times in 2023
The issue at hand is despite federal rulings forcing all states to have some level of "shall issue" concealed permits, and laws on the books, California's process has left it to county sheriffs to follow the evaluation criteria. Some, like San Bernardino, practically rubber stamp them if you pass the background checks. Others, like Ventura, Riverside, LA, etc. try their hardest to find ways to reject them - even circumventing the law to do so.

They've also tried to implement strong arm policies like "We will notify your employer you have a license" knowing most large employers in California are fairly liberal and anti-gun and might look at that negatively to try to dissuade people from even exercising the right.

bbarn··on Decline in teen drug use continues, surprising experts
I was a big fan of cocaine back in the 90s. I never got to the "problem" level with it but if it was there I was the first to raise my hand.

My personality has changed a little, but I'd still probably jump at it today, if it weren't for the fear of fentanyl. I'm not worried about addiction, I'm worried about death.

By 17 I was on my own and joining the military. My daughter is 25 and just got her first real job out of college. By her age I had a 6 year old child (her). I'm not saying I took the right path (I didn't) but the level of maturity I had at her age was vastly different. Her peers are all similar, and when I was young many of mine were similar to me. I do thing generationally / culturally there's a difference.
bbarn··on Why Pascal Deserves a Second Look
Well, prior to 7 I had the yellow one. 6? and no books or manuals, just some snippets from a Peter Norton book I got from the library enough times that the librarian asked me to not check it out for two weeks once. I got 7 for christmas and it came with the manual and maybe I mis-remember the difference between "added" and "I learned about it then"
bbarn··on Why Pascal Deserves a Second Look
The last version of TP I used was I think 7? and it added in inline assembler. It was super nice for 14 year old me to learn assembly just enough to do the things TP couldn't do (like control a mouse on DOS). It was my gateway to a life of software development.
bbarn··on Buy payphones and retire
Because they make money on low price candy, like gumball machines and other quarter operated stuff that kids impulse buy with their parents money.
bbarn··on Buy payphones and retire
I have a non-technical friend that runs a vending machine business. He targets exclusively small locations like gas stations, bodegas, etc. He makes a great living, but he's also started farming out filling and collection to employees now because it's a lot of driving and work to do it.
bbarn··on Why wordfreq will not be updated
He was a legend.
bbarn··on Why wordfreq will not be updated
No disagreement for the most part.

I used to be able to say search for Trek bike derailleur hanger and the first result would be what I wanted. Now I have to scroll past 5 ads to buy a new bike, one that's a broken link to a third party, and if I'm really lucky, at the bottom of page 1 will be the link to that part's page.

The shitification of the web is real.

Commonly, Teal or Turquoise.
bbarn··on Eating the Birds of America: Audubon's Culinary Reviews of America's Birds
There are some people that believe hunting should just be go to the woods, with your rifle or bow, and start walking around looking for deer. They are opposed to things like setting up feed piles of corn or apples, having cameras set up to find common paths for deer, etc. I suspect the latter where someone spend pre-season effort to find where they are is what's meant by scouting.

A personal note on that - I've done those things for years, seen big bucks on trail cams, bought bags of feed corn, watched them eating them on the trail cam, then gone to that spot and never seen deer in hunting season. :)

bbarn··on Eating the Birds of America: Audubon's Culinary Reviews of America's Birds
I think the charter-type hunters are probably a statistic irrelevance in hunting in general, but unfortunately, money speaks, even when you don't want it to speak.
bbarn··on Eating the Birds of America: Audubon's Culinary Reviews of America's Birds
| Not to mention, hunting is actually very difficult (contrary to a lot of belief).

This always bothered me. The attitude that you just walk up to some defenseless deer and shoot it and that's some unskilled cruel thing.

In reality it's hours or days in a row in a short amount of time a season is open sitting in miserable weather where hopefully the research you've done or the attempts to attract them might outweigh the fact that they can smell you from a mile away and are skittish at every sound in the world. Oh, and the practice and training you've had to do with whatever method you're using to hunt with.

Then there's the expense. Licenses, weapons, gear, time off work, you name it. I quit doing it simply because I don't have the time to invest in it as an adult.

bbarn··on They don't make 'em like that any more: Borland Turbo Pascal 7
If memory serves, RAM was my reason why I couldn't. Not so easy to upgrade as it is today. I tried it once or twice, using some HDD utility at the time that partitioned off some space for RAM like a modern day swap file.. and it did not go well.
bbarn··on They don't make 'em like that any more: Borland Turbo Pascal 7
Was TP for Windows considered TP7? I spent my youth in Turbo Pascal 7 writing graphics based apps in DOS and never even know they made a Windows version. Not that my 286 could run Windows.
bbarn··on SwissMicros DM32 Released [video]
I must be the only person to have a bad experience with SwissMicros. I bought a DM16 when I lived in Iceland, it took months to arrive, and it was absolutely not worth the wait. The build quality was poor, the metal plate was crushed down so half the buttons were hard to get to work (but in an undamaged box), and when I reached out to them, they told me I needed to send it back, the cost of shipping (at my expense) more than the calculator and the import tariffs I had.

Been an RPN lover my whole life but I was really let down with them.

Yeah, I was in the navy actually, but my lane was purely electronics, I too only drive a 15' fishing boat.
bbarn··on The U.S. Navy's $100M checkbox (2019)
Seems to me a technically advanced enough system like this should probably combine the independent throttles with the steering to some extent? I'm talking out of my rear possibly, but like if a severe enough turn radius was used, maybe then automatically adjust the throttles to make it possible in combination with the rudder?

(as a default)

bbarn··on The U.S. Navy's $100M checkbox (2019)
"Never" is a strong word.

I could definitely see value in war-time, if perhaps one was degraded or damaged, and required special attention that might justify having a person focused on it and communicating with the helm.

bbarn··on The U.S. Navy's $100M checkbox (2019)
I am totally with you here. It's amazing to me how as cars have gotten easier to drive with technology, we've continued to add distractions to the driver as "features".

I don't even listen to music when I'm driving. I mentally make note of my path before I drive and might have the GPS up just to be able to glance at my arrival time or traffic info here and there, but largely I don't even touch the fancy touch screen display while in motion.

bbarn··on Hackers may have leaked the Social Security Numbers of every American
Oh I certainly have. I've seen this quoted by my crazy family members:

Revelation 13:16-17 King James Version 16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:

17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

bbarn··on Hackers may have leaked the Social Security Numbers of every American
The lack of a federal ID is almost irrelevant at this point. Most states have moved to "Real ID" which requires almost as much if not the same to get as a passport (federal ID). Requirement to have that has been coming (and admittedly pushed back several times) for a long time.

bbarn··on Anxious Generation – How Safetyism and Social Media Are Damaging the Kids
I don't think this is quite the same.

Newspapers were largely uninteresting to kids, and if anything would have helped literacy at that time which was still a struggle.

Early radio and TVs were often family bonding time, as households had only one.

Video games kickstarted computer literacy for an entire generation.

This is a targeted exploitation-driven market now that has been so much more refined by technology that it's beyond addictive. It's also targeted in a way none of those other things could have been to a specific individual to double down on that.

bbarn··on Tour de France: How professional cycling teams eat and cook on the road
There are days on the bike where I would probably commit a crime to get a cold Coca-cola, and I almost never drink sodas otherwise.
bbarn··on The History of DR DOS
Sounds like that never made it to market. Would have been great for me at the time, I was stuck having to trade my Outbound notebook in for a PC one because I couldn't get system 7 on it, and 7 was a game changer compared to 6 (Multi-tasking!!). Would likely have never left mac if it weren't for that.
