bayleo··on How do I get in shape? Excercise Hack for Entrepreneurs
Huh? Lifting for an hour burns a comparable amount (around half as much) of calories to jogging for an hour and is not only more sustainable for a beginner, but helps build muscle mass which makes losing fat exponentially easier.

I guess you could argue that it doesn't have all the cardiovascular benefits, but the usual definition of "in shape" isn't exclusively cardio-fitness. Just do whatever exercise suits you best that you are most likely to devote time to.

bayleo··on Fed takes over AIG
The attitude with which these companies have been conducting business would seem to indicate that this is hardly the first time we've created moral hazard.
bayleo··on How not to use Powerpoint
Only when there are good results to generate. Even then better to overload with information so that it won't look completely different from when we need to present poor results in the same manner.
bayleo··on Ask HN: How can one deal with bad management?
Just when you thought selling out was only a concern for musicians and painters, eh?
bayleo··on How not to use Powerpoint
The marketing crack is 100% fair but explainable. Sometimes the only way to justify our existence as marketers is to completely mystify the higher-ups with data-storms.
bayleo··on AT&T history (image)
I've seen this image before. One missing divestiture of note is the Bell Labs/Lucent spin-off from AT&T in 1996.
bayleo··on Ask HN: Why doesn't Dilbert quit?
Because he only needs a few more months before he's vested.
bayleo··on Rate/Review my startup - streamfile
In my opinion no explanation should be necessary on the homepage. I went straight to the navigation bar to find an explanation but was tripped up a bit because "How it Works" is the third link on the bar and not the first.
bayleo··on Dangerous New Chris Anderson Theory: We No Longer Need Logic
I enjoyed the article Hank. As someone working on developing data-driven machine learning systems for marketing purposes, it made me think twice about some of the conclusions I am able to jump to based only on correlation. Certainly, these methods are quite useful in my field and the other less precise social sciences. In the hard sciences, however, advancing theory without a model seems preposterous save perhaps for a supportive role in special cases.

EDIT: almost feels like a republic (model) vs. democracy (data) political discussion

bayleo··on Ask YC: what non-top-tier college to apply for?
Not that this should be the determining factor, but with which state do you have residency? If you're concerned about costs someone may be able to recommend a good school you could get into and still have in-state rates the first 1-2 years.
bayleo··on June 19, 240 B.C.: The Earth Is Round, and It's This Big
Either he was not as prolific in the first place, or not as many of his writings have survived to this day. Sadly most of our views of ancient historical figures is plagued by the same myopia.

The ticket to lasting fame may not be just success, but may instead be a combination of success and luck in having your works preserved for generations.

bayleo··on Loyal to Its Roots
While I agree that this article made me think twice about my preconceptions of plant-life, it is nonetheless important to remember that evolution -- despite the length of time involved -- does not necessarily lead to complicated behavior.
bayleo··on Michael Crichton predicted Mass Media's current fate in 1993
I especially like the part where he trashes speculative and opinionated articles in the media in the midst of an article steeped in the former and speckled with the latter.
bayleo··on Who Has Comment Copyright Ownership In A Disqus Era?
Most services with primarily user-generated content have already covered their bases; check out the reddit ToS ("Rules of Usage," item #3) or digg's ToS (item #6) which dumps all their content under the CC umbrella.

bayleo··on I'm curious, Hackers, what do you think of the reddit redesign?
Hey Alexis, I had to kill the "Customize your reddit" frame and the submit/create windows on the right as they are serious real-estate hogs on my 5:4 monitor at work. If you guys could add this to the preferences it would probably help out some users like me who are not willing to play with greasemonkey.
bayleo··on Foldr - mnemonic
Fess up, you found this while searching for a domain for a prospective file-hosting site you're working on, huh eru? :)
bayleo··on New Laptop
Didn't take too long to find the model with OpenSUSE installed on their site:

bayleo··on The Zero-Emissions One-Wheeled Motorcycle
That was this old article...

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/science/article2195...

But it was discussing walking, not riding (far more efficient), and used common milk as the calorie provision (effectively a worst-case scenario).

bayleo··on What a load of old rubbish: MMOs. They're doing it wrong.
Immense scale and/or procedurally generated content would sell me alone. At any rate, don't be shy -- plug your game -- I'll be sure to check it out!
bayleo··on Ask YC: What's the most inspiring sci-fi book you've read?
Gene Wolfe's two 'Sun' series, though in many cases you might be hard-pressed to recognize that his work is actually sci-fi.
bayleo··on Test your stock-picking skills with instant feedback. Most common word from my users: "addicting".
Where are EPS and Beta? I'd love to see them added to the app.
bayleo··on Classic math puzzles for job interviews
Yeah, these puzzles are too unique and are in many cases well known problems/paradoxes that candidates are likely to know. Interviewers might be better served by asking a generic, LSAT-style logic game or a somewhat simple but time consuming math problem (maybe polynomial factorization).
bayleo··on The Paradox of Choice: The Advantages of Closing a Few Doors
The only thing you can really glean from this study regarding UI design will be that users can and will panic and reach for their back/undo buttons when options that were available to them previously are stripped away.
