Unfortunately, the answer is "yes." I have avoided doing that and the only way I moved "up" was first to move around, then to move into a consulting firm, then finally to my own corporation that is also a consulting firm. Is that a viable career trajectory? I have made it work, but I long ago gave up the idea that I would be anything except an "independent contributor." I did look at jobs like "architect" but those jobs are holding pens for people who couldn't cut it as developers but had enough company knowledge to want to keep around. I don't know what most architects do all day, I've never had one actually help accomplish anything. They like meetings and conferences and overeating, it seems.
Tech is a badly broken field in terms of career advancement. For a long time it made me very jaded. But I'm rich now, so I could give a shit.
Why the hate? Why do people want government to own their lives? Why do they (you) believe government contains solutions when we have observed with our own eyes it failing time and time again to produce worthwhile solutions to problems? And why stand in the way of commerce via onerous regulation and diktat? Is that not a Soviet style vs. an American style? I think the downvoters are simply scared and that's all.
Then why did they give the country to the people, then? Why did they make it democratic when they had the golden opportunity to create a monarchy or some other form of totalitarianism.
Obama was the first President to have a war going for the entirety of his two terms. At best, I think he was completely spineless. So many times he could have stood up to the banker class and the war mongers, but he failed to do that. Now Trump is going to take them on.
I'd be fine with government doing as you describe. For my entire life, we have lived under a system that is not that. The overreach of government is immense and it has the effect of crushing the individual and their spirit. I'm not suggesting I want total anarchy, but government as an arbiter and source of redress is like an 18th or 19th century concept it would seem.
I also think our government has been co-opted by Marxists, but I know I'll get shit for that.
Despite the derision on here, I think the answer is quite simply that the new executive branch wants to get its cabinet up and running and make sure that the messaging by these agencies is in line with the political positions of the leadership. I think the media is making more of this than really exists (as usual) and that these agencies need to remember who is in charge and who ultimately funds them and for what purpose.
As someone who came up through universities with the full traditional CS background, and as someone who has hired and been a tech lead over many developers, I can count only one person I know who didn't get a degree who is a great developer. The people with degrees all had to learn a lot after school, as did I, but the one who is self-taught is some kind of savant, I kid you not. And as great a developer as he is, he had some holes in his knowledge that I ran across from time to time.
Okay, so I'm equipped, but how do I find those jobs? By thew way, I'm making more than the 128 as a developer already, and not in expensive Cali, so is it even worth it?
I think any time you're talking with c-suite type people, the stress level is pretty high. That's been my experience anyways.
The PhD is irrelevant. What is relevant is the experience of doing science in a rigorous fashion. Today's "data scientist in a box" lessons don't give people the basic understanding of how to approach a problem or even what a null hypothesis is. Some of the videos on Youtube make it seem like any correlation is relevant when they don't even know what they don't know.
I'm going to give you all a small dose of reality regarding Data Science. Are you ready? It's being hyped to the max to sell courses, books, seminars, and what have you. So far, the number of data science jobs available in most cities is at least for now not in line with the MASSIVE hype taking place.
I would love to have a job doing Data Science: I have a PhD in a relevant field so I recently pushed down hard on this area. I took the Coursera course, I'm learning all the various Python libraries, I learned R, and do anything I can every day to pick up a skill here or there. I even have a "Kaggle" account. What I don't have are job leads because there aren't actually that many jobs and the ones that do exist say "data science" but really mean other things.
Oh lordy. Did we not want to know the truth about a public figure? It was a service to all voters to have a full understanding of the person and the party and shenanigans and unlawful misdeeds. That kind of sunshine is always welcome and I would go as far as saying that people in government have no expectation of privacy and that secrecy at those levels is highly dangerous to liberty because 99% of the time it is used to cover up misdeeds or incompetence. Whether that extends to Mr. Podesta, I'm less sure, but after what they did to Bernie Sanders, I'm not shedding any tears for those people. They're scum. And it is the utmost good that Clinton lost the election--we can't survive that kind of corruption or we end up as a dictatorship.
This is a thinly-veiled "Bash Trump" article. It is purely speculative what the Trump administration will do at this point. Obama was shitty on civil liberties, Bush was the one who caused us so much harm to begin with. But if we want privacy then we have to fight to get it back the same way Americans are fighting to get back their full 2nd Amendment rights. It can be done, but this stupid, petty, left vs. right false dichotomy has to end--there are only statists and individualists, that's all there is. You have those want to coerce and those who want to be free.
What's funny is, all the farmers I have met were millionaires. I know that isn't strictly true, but many do very well for themselves. Land value has a lot to do with it, I suppose.
Better watch it, common sense is downvoted pretty hard here at HN!
There are ways to better oneself without ever setting foot in a college or university. How did America's forefathers survive! I was the first person in my entire male lineage to attend college and yet I come from a long line of successful businessmen.
Stop being so self righteous. Do you own a BMW or Audi? I do, and I'm totally polite driving mine. Also, when you have a car that handles and responds better you tend to drive it harder and you forget that everyone else is in some inferior product.
I don't completely trust the NTSA and I'm skeptical about auto-piloting cars but accept that more and more of those will be on the roads. I will never ride in a vehicle that lacks an override mechanism.
In general, I think we are moving way too fast towards these self-driving vehicles because certain factions want to try and replace long and short haul truckers with robotic systems that are cheaper and damn the consequences.
Yeah, been there, done that, got the t-shirt. Bad management. The "unlimited" vacation policy is a trap, too. I don't go to places that offer that, it's a litmus test. Nowadays I do contracts and it's such a simpler model--you get paid for the hours you work and don't get paid for the hours you don't work. It's perfect for me.
