batbomb··on Docker might be eating your batteries?
etcd by way of minikube eats your batteries for sure
batbomb··on Indico – Open source tool for event organization, archival and collaboration
Maybe you could take ROOT back though. I think a lot of grad students would thank you. I know 2007-2011 me would.

(I’m mostly kidding)

batbomb··on Andreessen Horowitz is opening an office in SF
ah, that's because you don't know about the back way through Whiskey Hill Road to Cañada that you should take from 5-6:30 PM if you are going north. It's not bad if you are headed south. A-H is so far up the hill that it doesn't make much of an impact for them though
batbomb··on Exotic Atom
I think protons would like to have a word with you.
batbomb··on Handbrewing Coffee
it’s a sign that it’s a dark roast, which many mass produced coffees are. The third wave has tried to instill a culture of “nothing darker than a city roast” which I think has been harmful, as it marginalizes all dark roasts as cheap roasts, which isn’t the case.

That said, I think dark roasts age much less gracefully than a medium roast due to the oxygen exposure of oils, but I really love a full city roast for espresso.

batbomb··on San Francisco median one bedroom apartment rent hits a new peak of $3,690
No, the schools aren’t that good. And it’s not an enclave, the entire peninsula is extremely expensive except for a few patches (San Bruno, parts of Redwood City, Santa Clara) - and there’s not much availability in those places. The only place close to what most people outside of California would consider affordable is deep east Oakland or Richmond, after that you need to go to Tracy or Vallejo or past San José.

batbomb··on WebDAV (2010)
I was recently working on an nginx lua script to aid with impersonation (setfsuid, setfsgid, setgroups) so I could implement a multi-user webdav server, mostly with the goal of pointing it at some existing file mounts and making sure permissions were checked/honored correctly - especially file ownership. I need to test it a lot more, but in case anyone is interested:

I have the x61s. Up until about 3 years ago I still used it quite a bit. It was always my travel companion too. Mostly I just don't use computers at home much, otherwise I'd probably have used it more.

It's a bit fragile now, dropping it a few times over 7 years can do that. The dual core core 2 duo and 4GB of RAM, and 9 Cell (160GB 7200RPM drive) battery meant that it was good enough for just most things for a very long time.

Of the computers I've had, it rivals the 2015 MBP Retina with being a favorite of all time. I'd possibly give it a slight edge over the MBP due to size and keyboard.

It was also nicer than the later X2xx series, IMO, which is why I went with macbooks later.

batbomb··on California lawmakers introduce plan to end surprise ER bills
Of course it's arbitrary but that doesn't mean it's not reasonable. Sure - they might be close to breaking even or at a slight loss when taking medicare, and that probably gives them the wiggle room they need to be sustainable.

Put another way - the government gets a 33% discount compared to private insurers.

If the argument is that medicare prices are unreasonably low, that seems like a different issue.

batbomb··on YouTube Just Demonetized Anti-Vax Channels
It's not often that a horrible opinion can lead to a budding public health crisis, but this one has. If there wasn't a budding public health crisis, I'd agree with you.

The flip side of this is that it's terrible PR for YouTube if they _do_ let it continue, at which point it turns into a "YouTube is supporting anti-vaxxers during a budding health crisis" headline.

batbomb··on Grave Concerns Over White House Efforts to Transfer Nuclear Tech to Saudi Arabia
The Times submission around this was flagged. Considering this particular issue actually does have a few overlaps with tech, given the nature of Saudi investment/Softbank and the tech transfer (which often stays on the front page when it’s China), as well as nuclear (which also tends to stay on the front page) - it would be nice if this isn’t flagged and there could be a substantial discussion on it.
batbomb··on December Boy: On Alex Chilton
If you haven't heard it, the Ork Records compilation is really good:

(Of course, all the Big Star albums are great too)

batbomb··on Ike Jime, the Japanese Slaughter Method for Tastier Fish
Many (most?) mac and cheese recipes involve making a mornay sauce, but they rarely call it that. The slightly more informed recipes will actually call it a béchamel sauce and then have you add cheese.

I really hate that when I'm reading a recipe, if it just said "make a mornay sauce with 4 oz cheddar and 4 oz gruyere" you'd cut out 3 steps from the recipe. It's loop unrolling for recipes.

batbomb··on Ike Jime, the Japanese Slaughter Method for Tastier Fish
This is probably a better overview for the HN crowd:

batbomb··on Scientists cut the tolerable intake of PFAs by 99.9%
Ditch the Lodge, don't even think about the artisanal cast iron, and go straight for the DeBuyer Mineral B. It's much cheaper than the crap artisanal things, much more options in pan sizes, and finished better.

More generally - if they don't sell it at a restaurant supply store (or a store catering toward the restaurant business), you are going to be overpaying for it. This is true for almost everything you really need in the kitchen.

batbomb··on Remastered 1964 films show origins of Stanford Linear Accelerator Center
I've been passing "Fabrication of the Accelerator Structure" (the un-remastered version) around to people the last several years to show some people where I work.

Andy recently remastered these. I hadn't seen the first one before, but the second one is 100% work 42 minutes of your time. The narration is great, the topic is great, the pictures are great. Unlike current videos, it's happy to dwell on shots for more than 2 seconds, in silence, while people are actually working - instead of the pretend-working for a camera shot with dialog or futuristic music to fill the silence.

I really wish they'd have created more of these types of videos over the years, but $84k in today's dollars for a video would be a lot of EPO budget these days, in addition to 42 minutes being an eternity. It's a great documentary, and, I think, a treasure.

It should be said that Singularity does actually rely on setuid scripts to actually work with images.
batbomb··on How we spent two weeks hunting an NFS bug in the Linux kernel
I had been experiencing a similar bug that we reported to Red Hat after being stumped. It started occurring out of the middle of nowhere but it would happen only in .01% of our jobs we launched into a batch farm. We launch about 15k batch jobs a day, and it was enough to be a problem.

Before a job was launched, a daemon pre-staged some job contents (logfiles, env, etc..) and started writing out to a job summary file. Then the job would start, continue writing to one of the files, which would become corrupted.

It ended up being this bug: https://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-nfs/msg41335.html

batbomb··on McKernel – A lightweight multi-kernel OS for high-performance computing
I would think there's likely to be some security implications with this that aren't acceptable at a lot of HPC centers (at least in the US)
batbomb··on AWS Ground Station – Ingest and Process Data from Orbiting Satellites
NASA telescopes used to be governed by ITAR. They've relaxed those a lot, but you had to use software to transmit the data encrypted all the way to your science pipelines (e.g. Telescope to White Sands to Goddard to $INSTITUTION)

batbomb··on Build Your Own Professional-Grade Audio Amp on the Sort-Of Cheap
I used to build guitar amps for fun and repair them for friends. I have parts of a Sound City, Plush, Harmony, Gibson amps in my storage unit. I have some old heathkit thing from the 60s. I have two different Traynors.

Depending on your budget, I'd get a Vox Pathfinder, AC4, or AC10, and then take him to get a pedal or two after Christmas. You can usually find an AC4 used easily. Some of the digital amps are fun, but if he really gets into it, he's more likely to keep one of the amps I mentioned and buy pedals anyway. An AC4 (especially an AC10) will be something which usually sounds really good on it's own.

batbomb··on Turns Out Wearing a Hi-Vis Vest Gets You into Everything for Free
Before I was 21 I would just give my actual, underage ID to get into bars a few times. The door person would look a bit confused sometimes, but would wave you on through.

For big concerts, you could (probably still can) buy previous backstage passes on eBay and reuse them on following shows, since they didn't always issue new badges for every show.

The other thing that usually works is just carrying something heavy.
