batat··on Russia considers 'unplugging' from internet
But they're already doing it.

More than 17 millions of IP addresses were blocked in 2018 [1][2] including large segments of Google/Amazon/Azure/DO/Linode etc. Although recently roskomnadzor unblocked most of them (perhaps due to the spread of DPI among internet providers, so they able to deal with https now and act more accurately), but ~800,000 IPs remains blocked. The government doesn't give a shit about creating a bad reputation for online business in Russia. Instead, actively engaged in "import substitution", e.g. making Сhina-like isolated payment card system [3] or spending millions for "national search engine" [4] (currently bankrupt, AFAIK). They are seems to be totally OK with isolation.

batat··on Medium is a poor choice for blogging
I hate modern web. Every site nowdays filled with bright/flashing/wobbling/jumping buttons, modal windows, pinned bars covering 1/3 of the content (or 2/3 on my phone in landscape mode) and asking me to install Yet Another Special App to view site. But I already have app for viewing sites - damn web browser. Browser can even open different pages in different tabs. Or even different sites in different tabs, unbelievable!

(Will it ever end?)

batat··on Why should I use DuckDuckGo instead of Google?
I'm pretty sure there may be some. Please check my comment in previous post about DDG https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17868117
batat··on DuckDuckGo Raises $10M
Rather yes than no.

I tested DDG vs Yandex/Google/Bing and I'm pretty sure Yandex acts as "main" (if not "single") search provider for my language (or whatever heuristics DDG uses). For some senseless Ukrainian keywords Yandex shows almost identical to DDG results, while Google/Bing - mostly different.

In 2017 Yandex (among some other Russian companies) got ban in Ukraine and access to its services was blocked. Roughly at the same time Ukraine region have disappeared from DDG ("kl=ua-uk" URL parameter is still mentioned on search params page[1], but not working).

These events are likely connected. Furthermore, if DDG is just an aggregator, why a year later they can't switch to Google as local search provider and bring regional search for Ukraine back? Google local search results are at least as relevant as Yandex were. Or there are some hidden contractual obligations, partnerships, royalties directly from Yandex etc.? This looks unclear and suspicious to me.

batat··on DuckDuckGo moves beyond search to also protect you while browsing
Ukraine region not available any more: while "ua-uk" URL parameter is still mentioned on search params page[1], it's not working. I didn't get the answers on DDG forum (now closed in favor of reddit), neither on /r/duckduckgo. I suspect this could be connected somehow to Yandex block. Anyway, currently can't use DDG for local search, sad :(

Looks like rumors and disinformation spreaded by Anton Rozenberg - former Telegram developer. Russian journalists refer to his Facebook post[1]. IIRC, Rosenberg and Durov had some serious conflict. I've seen article on Medium[2] (earlier with unblurred screenshots) and Rosenberg seemed to me not quite adequate person.

batat··on PlainJS – Vanilla JavaScript Repository
Yea, let's bury jQuery again and make more "helpers.js" [1]

    export function extend(src) {
      var obj, args = arguments

      for (let i = 1; i < args.length; ++i) {
        if (obj = args[i]) {
          for (let key in obj) {
            // check if this property of the source object could be overridden
            if (isWritable(src, key))
              src[key] = obj[key]
          }
        }
      }
     }
or just add super-unique stuff to our classes [2]

    DragSelect.prototype.removeClass = function( element, classname ) {
      var cn = element.className;
      var rxp = new RegExp( classname + \'\\b\', \'g\' );
      cn = cn.replace( rxp, \'\' );
      element.className = cn;
      return element;
    };

    DragSelect.prototype.hasClass = function( element, classname ) {
      var cn = element.className;
      if( cn.indexOf( classname ) > -1 ) { return true; }
      else { return false; }
    };
or write tons of boilerplate code like

    if (typeof element === 'string') {
        owner.element = document.querySelector(element);
    } else {
        owner.element = ((typeof element.length !== 'undefined') && element.length > 0) ? element[0] : element;
    }
(mmm, it's so vanilla)

batat··on NTFS bug lets anyone hang or crash Windows 7 or 8.1
Browser's same-origin policy wolud prevent you from accessing local resources from internet. But this is still pretty exploitable DoS.

One could craft a shortcut to "C:\$MFT\non-existing.exe" or bogus "desktop.ini" inside some folder (on network share?) and explorer will crash the system while trying to fetch an icon. I've got a lot of freezes and one BSOD somewhere in ntsf.sys on Windows 7/8.1:

    ntfs.sys (Ntfs+0x4688)
    Bugcheck code: 0x24 (0x1904FB, 0xFFFFF88018558398, 0xFFFFF88018557BF0, 0xFFFFF800022D4A77)
    Error: NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM
    file path: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\ntfs.sys
Here's what process monitor showed me right before BSOD. "Thread exit" from local session manager process looks quite interesting: https://www.dropbox.com/s/99qnpr25nt0tznh/procmon.jpg?raw=1

Exploit PoC:

WARNING! Unzipping this archive and/or stepping into unzipped folder likely to crash your system. You have been warned :) https://www.dropbox.com/s/sl5lw6yykvul5b7/ntfs_bug.zip?raw=1

Bottom line:

* Cromium-based browsers seems to download "file.lnk" as "file.download". Wise move, eh?

* Dropbox seems to delete shared lnk-files O_o

* God bless Sublime Text's session autosave.
