bastih··on Building a fly brain in a computer
It's interesting to see biological system and implementation next to each other. Are there any similar visualizations for other ML-implementations?
bastih··on Using Google Cloud AutoML to Classify Poisonous Australian Spiders
I like the content of this blog post, but the use of stock photos was really off-putting and I had to almost force myself to keep on reading.
bastih··on Lost Art of Bending Over: How Other Cultures Spare Their Spines
Which brand would that be?
bastih··on About the goodwill of people: 4,500 users and 0 donations
Having looked at the tool, I'm wondering what OP expected. I "used" it for 10 seconds, and am still wondering why I'd need it or what the provided value is over "extract colors and order them in a list". Color scheming shouldn't start in your editor IMHO.

Paid use is based on perceived utility, and donations (to me) go to a perceived need (and if there's utility on top, that's great). This app doesn't cry "I need money to do X", so I'm not sure why the author even expected donations, and "boatloads of traffic" isn't a reason that gets me to donate, really.

bastih··on Ask HN: My company plans an ICO despite my opposition as CTO, any advice?
If you want to convince your crypto-enthusiasts, don't try with a huge report. It's not going to be read in detail (IMHO, just like few people ever read whitepapers). I'd make a short list of your strongest arguments, and have a conversation based on them. Probably even 1on1 if you can make that happen.

If they still want to do it, and you have no voting power, you are basically hosed -- consider though that if your investors do have voting power to sway direction, that's why they bought voting shares, to be able to sway direction. And if that means making non-sensical moves, oh well. And if you can't get your CEO's vote on this, and he can't convince the investors, it's probably a good moment to look for a different place to work at. Your company isn't yours unless you hold enough voting power.

bastih··on SQL Keys in Depth
Just from looking at a 200 member club I'm part of, I can see at least two name collisions in our current club roster. So absolutely agree with your assessment.

bastih··on Show HN: Monica, an open-source CRM to manage friends and family
Looks like this is a service only for very young people? Got this wonderful error while trying to add my father.

bastih··on Is the C++ preprocessor still needed?
That's because the English language is a mess with respect as to how something is pronounced.
bastih··on Ask HN: Google Doc email virus?
It was "Google Docs"
bastih··on Microsoft to shut down Wunderlist in favor of its new app, To-Do
Especially with the Android-Apps that support org-mode, this actually isn't too bad of a setup.
bastih··on Website builder Wix acquires art community DeviantArt for $36M
As often as this comes up, I see know quite a few German people (artists, and people with basic web site needs) using wix.

I feel that more and more people seem ok with services just not being named in their local language.

bastih··on A Prettier JavaScript Formatter
I've looked at pfff and couldn't really figure out what's supposed to work and what isn't. Would love to pretty print python with it. (I've been looking at the many different pretty printers in the python world and haven't found anything that I feel works well enough). Did you use it for pretty printing python?

bastih··on Ask HN: What cool development languages/tools changed your career?
For me that was Smalltalk. The environment, the tooling, the purity of the language. Not saying everything is great there, but it's pretty great once you get used to it.

Seaside as a completely different approach on how to develop web applications which turns your thinking upside down when you are used to a typical request-response workflow.

Django as a godsaint after working on a medium-sized pure-php project without any clear structuring.

bastih··on Boston Dynamics' New Robot – Spot
Does anyone else feel creeped out by these robots? Put a flamethrower on and some intelligence into Spot, and have the intelligence decide that humans are bad.
bastih··on What makes Nim practical?
The idea here -as far as I'm aware- is to allow for different coding styles without having to wrap another library. One author preferring camel case while another library uses underscore, lowercase naming?

For a new language, I feel like one could have just forced one style unto the users, but that's just me talking.
