baskire··on Kandi K27 electric car available in California for $7,999 after rebates
Got a 2013 leaf for 6500 cash. Insurance is $20/month. Gets about 80 miles of range.

They really are that cheap.

baskire··on Google Photos will end its free unlimited storage in June 2021
Probs they expect a 2TiB plan user to never use a significant amount of the 2TiB. Whereas the 10TiB plan user is more likely to use a higher percentage of allotted storage.
baskire··on ByteDance asks federal apeals court to vacate US order forcing it to sell TikTok
No it’s called policy making. You show the CCP an inch and they’ll take two.

The way to combat the CCP is to avoid even giving an inch. It worked in the Cold War and will work today.

baskire··on ByteDance asks federal apeals court to vacate US order forcing it to sell TikTok
Biden would be a fool to give the CCP even an inch. For too long they’ve taken advantage of western society without any repercussions.

The equivalent is when the world pushed for peace with hitler before ww2. Even after his many aggressions. Many historians ponder the what if scenario if the world pushed back on day 1, would we of still had ww2

baskire··on EU hits Amazon with antitrust charges over merchant data
Not all stores “buy” their own stock. Take Walmart what doesn’t sell they just give back to manufacturer and don’t pay for it.
baskire··on Zoom lied to users about end-to-end encryption for years, FTC says
Why isn’t it? I highly suspect the CCP stole trade secrets with zoom.
baskire··on “Overpaid Executive Tax” in SF hits firms that pay CEOs 100X more than workers
They can also give those in the Llc worse benefits as it’s a separate entity.

FYI, this is already a common practice.

COVID taught me that video conferencing is so much more demanding than phone conference bridges.

The best conferencing solutions I’ve used to shame those not using video

baskire··on VPN by Google One
They won’t at the vpn connection but they will elsewhere. And they can design the vpn to make tracking at other layers more possible.

You could just have hospitals be required to meet FedRAMP compliance.

It is kind of crazy that hipaa compliance isn’t encompassing enough

baskire··on Google stops selling Nest Secure, still offers support
Steve Yegge, a former Googler & GCP Customer begs to differ. From my experience GCP does deprecate a lot of libraries, SDKs, and APIs. None of which are covered in the SLA policy.

baskire··on Evolving Reddit’s Workforce
I keep hearing this. Yet in practice have not seen top candidates in non Bay Area cities request drastically lower compensation
baskire··on Permanently remote workers seen doubling in 2021 due to pandemic productivity
Your under estimating the political incentives.

New manager comes in. Hires team in India. He designs his metrics in a way to be greatly improved. Higher ups impressed...guy now in charge of department does the same. Org is now mostly outsourced.

5 years later, oh shit this was a horrible idea the company is dying.

However to that manager and his bosses, they just didn’t care. These ppl all saw their stock appreciate and left before it got bad.

Wall Street and public companies are often rewarded for short term gain at cost of long term future. It’s why startups are able to disrupt an established market.

baskire··on Permanently remote workers seen doubling in 2021 due to pandemic productivity
And who pays for that?

For many remote work involves less take home pay.

baskire··on Twitter and Facebook's action over Joe Biden article reignites bias claims
Are you saying the photos and videos are fakes made by some ML algorithm?

For all you know the Post validated the content itself as real.

^ ever work with someone in a remote office. I’ve always seen their careers take a hit. Same for remote employees.

It’s great when you have a family with kids and you’re less career focused. But I noticed my comp increased almost 2x their’s over the same timeframe.

baskire··on San Francisco Apartment Rents Crater Up to 31%, Most in U.S.
Is it? the trend I’ve seen is wfh not work remote. Wfh still means going to the office 1-2 days a week.
baskire··on San Francisco Apartment Rents Crater Up to 31%, Most in U.S.
Sf has some great hole in the wall places that aren’t too expensive. E.g. Tonga room isn’t that badly priced

Dropping 50$/person on dinner & drinks in sf isn’t that much money when your rent is 50x+ that figure.

baskire··on San Francisco Apartment Rents Crater Up to 31%, Most in U.S.
Saw friends of friends leave sf and together rent a mansion in Hawaii.

If the bars, clubs, gyms, and even beaches shut down why stay if you are renting at market rate. It’s literally cheaper to move your belongings into storage and move into a vacation home with friends.

Also most sf apartments don’t have office space for all the tenants.

Quic also has a window size.

> QUIC congestion control has been written based on many years of TCP experience, so it is little surprise that the two have mechanisms that bear resemblance. It’s based on the CWND (congestion window, the limit of how many bytes you can send to the network) and the SSTHRESH (slow start threshold, sets a limit when slow start will stop).

baskire··on Please stop using CDNs for external JavaScript libraries
My understanding is that it’s not TCP but the tcp AND tls handshake overhead combined. Where-as quick combined both handshakes at the protocol level.

It’s cause the cncf is heavily staffed by GCP, and it shows in the way it’s run.

The warts of CNCF are the same warts of GCP

I see the server market skipping over and and moving to arm. The Apple silicon makes it easier for Silicon Valley Devs to use an arm ecosystem. That way dev/test/staging/prod is the same ish binaries.
baskire··on Recycling was a lie to sell more plastic, recycling industry veteran says
We’d be better off burning our trash at peaker power plants when the sun isn’t shining, the wind isn’t blowing...etc.
baskire··on CNCF Cloud Native Interactive Landscape
GCP has done more price increases than that.

Heck it charges for In use public ips attached to a GCE node. That was also a price increase.

baskire··on CNCF Cloud Native Interactive Landscape
Except CNCF ecosystem looks more like open stack these days. A collection of software that half works together and eats up the majority of your time doing undifferentiated ops.

Devs should be focusing on the business and growing business metrics. Not spending their time learning a new cool tool that plugs into a different tool which is all replaced in 3 months with a newer tool.
