The laptop was all over the news at the time. But the news said it was Russian misinformation.

No. That's not what happened.

The FBI told Facebook "Be on the lookout for an uptick in disinformation campaigns." A few weeks later, the Hunter Biden laptop story broke. It had all the hallmarks of what the FBI was warning about, plus if you remember correctly, there was a lot of propaganda from the Dems and former CIA officials saying it was Russian misinformation.

I think Zuckerberg did a great job. I thought he was so robotic from the video clips that I saw but he's in fact quite normal. I think this was a great PR move on his part because I felt like he was being honest and transparent and most of all human.

I don't usually submit jokes but this genuinely made me laugh and figured others on here would find it similarly funny.

Fraud isn't one big problem, it's the biggest problem. Fraud is rampant. And no ability to reverse transactions means that fraud will keep going until no one trusts the technology at all and we are back to square one.

Without trust, it just won't work and that's where the credit card companies did it right by guaranteeing against fraud. Of course, they did this off the backs of the merchants instead of putting their own money at risk but that's a different discussion.

The main reason to use Linux is because almost everyone else is. If you're only installing it on your own servers at home, then that's okay. But in a business environment, the minor differences or improvements with FreeBSD are simply not worth the lack of familiarity for most people over Linux.

I used FreeBSD starting in 1999-ish and I still have the original Design and Implementation of the 4.4 BSD Operating System on my shelf. I used FreeBSD exclusively for years, but it has completely lost to Linux and Linux frankly is good enough.

Purposefully manipulative headlines like this are why I don't trust most articles from sources like vox.

The headline is used in a way to make it seem like Amazon is targeting students that are vulnerable to them, meanwhile Amazon is targeting those that would benefit the most in society, because they are most vulnerable to economic issues, like ex-inmates and students. Vox is doing its best to manipulate their words to make things look as bad as possible.

I wish there were a feature where I could automatically not see articles from certain content providers because they are so skewed and biased.

None of those will because they rely on engagement to make money. They need people logging into their servers so that they can see what they are looking at. That's not how RSS works, so of course they won't support it.

I've been using Blogtrottr to email me my RSS feeds for whatever I'm following. It's run without any hiccups in I think over 10 years. I have tons of feeds just emailing me every day and I skim through them and read whatever I find interesting. It's really awesome, much better for me than anything else.

Attributes suck when you're trying to write that data into a database. That's the main reason why lots of implementations enforced no attributes, because it made writing that data into a database table very hard.

Yes, it's called freedom.

You need to stop worrying about other people moralizing your choices.

If you asked those same people if getting abortions is immoral, they would likely say no, and that no one should be moralizing a woman's right to choose what to do with their body. And they are 100% right.

And in the same vein, they should not be moralizing what you decide to do with your money.

It's only slow because of ridiculous and unnescessary regulations around it. They can easily speed things up while still keeping it safe, but their (and our/US's) laws are kicking themselves in the butt.

Who cares, why would Tesla be beholden for the actions of its largest shareholder? Musk is acting in a capacity completely outside of Tesla. To think that Tesla is somehow connected is disinformation.

NIMBYs would all of a sudden want more housing to be built? 100% delusional.

Nothing would change except homeowners would get crushed by property taxes and especially given the horrific income inequality in California, all the middle and lower income families would get destroyed.

Thank God for Prop 13, it's the last vestige of income equality for Californians.

Companies need to spend more money on customer service. Period. End of story. But it's expensive so they would rather risk fucking over a percentage of their customers in hopes that they can contain any problems.

At some point, governments need to step in and regulate this once their customer support to customer ratio drops below a certain percentage. Otherwise it's a form of tax that creates extreme victims and its usually the small customers because big customers can always pick up the phone and call someone.

I didn't realize the impact she had on other people and thought the choice of her song in Stranger Things was meant to be kitschy but I guess not!

Canada is rife with oligopolies and the government does nothing to make this right. Everything is much more expensive in Canada vs the US because there's simply no competition.

These talking points are all lies, especially Prop 13. Look at the home prices and the home sales, all of which are getting sold at ridiculously high prices. The turnover is huge across the state. Demand for housing is still strong despite the interest rates, despite your Prop 13 BS.

What Prop 13 does is stop retired families from being forced to move out. The retired families in my neighborhood would have to pay $4000+/month in property tax. What will it be in 2030 or 2040? The only thing keeping things sane are things like Prop 13.

And don't forget, Pelosi, in all her glory, was trying to add back in the SALT tax exceptions to the Biden bills earlier this year. Why would she do that except to reward all her rich donors in CA?

How is Tesla stock still so high? Its market cap is $750B with a tiny amount of cars sold, Elon is ruining his reputation on a month over month basis, he gives his laid off workers one-week salary, and his stock price goes up with impunity. It's incredible!

In no way, shape or form does California have a "pretty good public school system".

Nancy Pelosi has been CA rep for decades and she is worth over $100M, meanwhile California education system is shit, the prison system is shit, taxes are among the highest in the US, income inequality is fucked, water is fucked, electricity is fucked. Same goes for all those politicians like Diane Feinstein, etc.

The last time a Republican had any presence in California was 30 years ago and the Dems have driven this state off a cliff. Why do Californians still keep falling for the same grift election after election? It doesn't matter who you vote for, all they do is steal from the people for their own gain and we keep voting for them because they give us lip service on particular causes.
