basil-rash··on I added some optimizations to my compiler that turns Lisp into JavaScript
Pretty much, though some would contest calling strings “objects”.

The spec indeed goes through some trouble to ensure they are pure value-types and do not exhibit any reference-like semantics, for instance by prohibiting their use as keys of WeakMaps and WeakSets - along with numbers, booleans, nullish values, and bignums.

basil-rash··on I added some optimizations to my compiler that turns Lisp into JavaScript
In fact, you cannot. But I encourage you to try!
basil-rash··on I added some optimizations to my compiler that turns Lisp into JavaScript
Ah, well all JS strings are always immutable and only value-referable (you have no access to the underlying memory location), so that’s not a concern here.
basil-rash··on I added some optimizations to my compiler that turns Lisp into JavaScript
What is the case you imagine where mutable strings would prohibit this?
basil-rash··on In Colorado, an ambitious new highway policy is not building them
Where do you live and what is your background that you think the only way a man might harass a woman is if he is drunk?
basil-rash··on In Colorado, an ambitious new highway policy is not building them
Get harassed by homeless? Or just men in general, if you’re a remotely attractive female (using the broadest term available as it certianly isn’t restricted to what we’d appropriately call “women”).
basil-rash··on An even faster Microsoft Edge
FWIW I've been using Edge for 4+ years now (since Chromium) and I've never had it ask me any questions on an update. The worst it did was restore my tabs after updates when I specifically configured it to never restore tabs, but that's been fixed for some time now.
basil-rash··on Controlling the Taylor Swift Eras Tour wristbands with Flipper Zero
What a delightfully simple solution! I have to imagine if I were given this problem I would muck it all up with wristbands assigned to seats and a 5G/IOT network needing to be installed at every stadium and custom control logic needing to be written and customized for every stadium…

Whereas they just hook up an IR lamp and use the exact same lighting control procedures every stage tech knows blindfolded. Brilliant!

basil-rash··on Testing quantised inertia on Proxima Centauri
> The discrepancy between the two curves can be accounted for by adding a dark matter halo surrounding the galaxy.

Funny. “This discrepancy can be accounted for by accounting for the discrepancy using the number fudging we developed specifically to account for the discrepancy.”

Discrepancy’s been accounted for, boss!

basil-rash··on Morgan Spurlock has died
The root comment is concerned with details about the individual. I provided details about the man which were not included in the link. I additionally provided a personal anecdote about how the immediate impact of his life work directly affected me, and possibly the fellow reader.

You butted in to talk about how corporate business practices have changed over time in ways that by your own admission have absolutely nothing to do with this guy, and accordingly have no place in this thread.

basil-rash··on Morgan Spurlock has died
If a forest has been leveled and I eulogize a particularly beautiful old tree that one was the pride of the land, the pedant who butts in saying “other trees died too you know” isn’t contributing anything much.
basil-rash··on Morgan Spurlock has died
Interesting, didn't know that was an option. I'll have to give it a try.
basil-rash··on Morgan Spurlock has died
I'm not dying on any hills – I'm just upset that the guy knowingly lied to the public, got rich-ish and famous as a result, and we all got screwed over for it.
basil-rash··on Morgan Spurlock has died
That site could do to mention his admission to decades of chronic alcoholism in his “MeToo” letter, which of course void the results of his Super Size Me study, in which the doctors repeatedly said he had liver damage “consistent with years of alcohol abuse”, which he then pinned on the McDonalds.

I for one am pissed that his fraudulent hit piece has made it impossible for more than one person to get SuperSize options and share them, resulting in potentially less overall calories than multiple other orders, along with cost savings and less work for the employees.

basil-rash··on DOJ: Man sentenced to 14 years for posession of deepfake CSAM
By that argument, deep fake porn shouldn’t exist at all. But it does, so clearly that’s not the way these people see the world. Some faces are simply “better” than others, at least in so far as those with perverted pornographic desires are concerned.

Regardless, child faces in adult bodies is in fact still illegal, see this detailed court report for more info: https://casetext.com/case/united-states-v-smelko-2

To amend my prior comment, the law says that the face actors in fact are harmed as well, reputationally. Fair enough; I’m not here to play “defend the pedo”.

basil-rash··on DOJ: Man sentenced to 14 years for posession of deepfake CSAM
This isn’t a news story as much as a DOJ press release, of which there are many many thousands available. News agencies have picked it up to get clicks, that doesn’t make the guy less guilty. News agencies do the same when a mass murder goes to jail, should we assume that is unexpected too?

Anyways, I’m not interested in playing this game of “defend the pedo”, but this site has way more background on the case: https://casetext.com/case/united-states-v-smelko-2

But I was actually incorrect, child faces on adult bodies is still unlawful, the linked article goes into more detail and prior casework on the matter.

basil-rash··on DOJ: Man sentenced to 14 years for posession of deepfake CSAM
The face actors weren’t harmed, the body actors (unidentifiable, but in all likelyhood youth) were.
basil-rash··on DOJ: Man sentenced to 14 years for posession of deepfake CSAM
> pictures that digitally superimposed the faces of child actors onto nude bodies and bodies engaged in sex acts

The question is whether these bodies were those of grown adults engaged in consensual activities. The answer is, in all likelihood, no. Many folks trying to give him the benefit of the doubt here, not sure why he deserves it (given he’s a repeat offender too).

basil-rash··on Utah Locals Are Getting Cheap 10 Gbps Fiber Thanks to Local Governments
Interesante. Is this server/client mode something factorio supports natively or is it a mod of some kind?
basil-rash··on Utah Locals Are Getting Cheap 10 Gbps Fiber Thanks to Local Governments
Strange that when one talks about a particular application using a lot of upstream bandwidth, we are meant to assume what they actually mean is that a separate application responsible for recording the UI of that first application and uploading it to a server uses a lot of upstream bandwidth.

Why is single player factorio phoning home so heavily?

If your primary goal is minimizing work, you can also try an electric bike, or driving!

Tongue in cheek, but isn’t fitness the point?

basil-rash··on VMware Fusion Pro: Now available free for personal use
What about people who virtualize various operating systems on macOS? That was my entire team at a prior engagement (at Microsoft, as it happens…). I suspect it’s a large number, developers tend to like macOS, so if you’re making a cross platform application and want to be able to test anything at all, you need a VM.
basil-rash··on VMware Fusion Pro: Now available free for personal use
It’s not the UI you charge for, it’s the Enterprise Support Plan.
basil-rash··on Meta Is Shuttering Workplace, Its Enterprise Version of Facebook
How did this compare to Yammer? (“Viva Engage”, if we let the PMs have their way)
basil-rash··on 100k Stars
A whole bunch of assumptions, mostly of the form “what other things look like from far away is probably what we look like from far away”. And “there probably isn’t anything that makes our perspective different from others”. We can’t test these, of course. But people are happy to assume them because without that there isn’t a field.
basil-rash··on Apple apologizes for iPad 'Crush' ad that 'missed the mark'
My position is that if people find it objectionable (and it’s not actually causing any real harm) they should carry on with their life pretending like it doesn’t exist. This pitchfork army debacle is a load of bologna.
basil-rash··on Apple apologizes for iPad 'Crush' ad that 'missed the mark'
Okay so don’t watch it? If I buy a $60 trumpet and a $30,000 dollar ad slot, I expect to be able to show whatever I damn please involving my $60 trumpet on my $30,000 ad slot, modulo laws of the land concerning acceptable use of broadcast media. If you are emotionally attached to the $60 trumpet I have used as a prop on my $30,000 ad slot in service of my personal artistic expression: fuck off, I don’t give a a shit, and there’s no reason I should. (Apologies for the crassness, but I really do believe the laws of the land correctly provide us significant rights of “uncouthuness” on public broadcasting channels)
