barnaby··on Atlanta to San Francisco: What I Learned Moving Cross-Country
Nice.

I moved out to SF 6 months ago from upstate NY. Rent is expensive, but my girlfriend and got an apartment for $1,200/month, 1 bedroom, 1 livingroom/kitchen, 1 bath. And there's an L stop right out front of our door... though, it does take 20 minutes to get downtown on it, we're in the sunset.

I got rid of a lot of stuff while moving too. It's better that way. I recommend that to everybody who's moving: stuff is expensive not valuable, just get rid of it, buy new stuff at Ikea (1 futon bed, 2 dressers, 1 table, 2 bedside tables plus lamps, all for just over $1,000).

Since we flew out here (I sold my car, she had hers shipped out here) I'd say we spent under $5,000 on the move.

It's totally awesome out here. Worth every penny!

barnaby··on 19 year old files S1 (IPO prospectus) to raise $12,500 for his beer pong company
Cool, so does this mean he can raise investment capital from non-accredited investors?

I filed my own C-corp in NY state (All the paperwork is boilerplate, there's just a $200 filing fee)... I wonder if SEC filing is reaching the same level of boilerplate where anyone can do it with standard forms?

If so, or if it's so easy a 19 year old beer pong enthusiast can do it, then why are there only about 8 or so IPO's per year?

barnaby··on [dead]
Yeah, why not have the police just make arrests and have the courts hold hearings? Have people who actually handle criminal investigations handle this!
barnaby··on New York Times paywall goes up January 2011
I'd pay for information that helps me make money... I don't think I'd pay for information that's just a different presentation of the same news that everyone else is covering.

I WOULD however pay a subscription for Glenn Beck to be TAKEN OFF the air, and the threat of having him come back on would be enough to keep me paying regularly.

barnaby··on LimeWire Crushed in RIAA Infringement Suit
It's all part of a natural cycle.

New media companies are being sued by old media companies because the old media companies bought the laws that made what the new media companies are doing illegal ...

just like how the old media companies were sued by older companies like Kodak who paid to have the laws make the recording industry illegal...

When companies like LimeWire or BitTorrent become multi-Billion dollar corporations, they will pay to have copyright law rewritten in such a way to prevent the next generation of competitors.

See, it's a cycle.

barnaby··on Twitter bug: Make anyone follow you on Twitter
I had the exact same feeling of panic, then relief to find out I'm not alone.
barnaby··on Twitter bug: Make anyone follow you on Twitter
Now he's at 0 along with everyone else
barnaby··on Twitter bug: Make anyone follow you on Twitter
confirmed, everyone is at 0
barnaby··on Dunning–Kruger effect
I am amazed that HN doesn't prevent you from submitting old news. Is it not possible to check for pre-existing URL's in LISP?
barnaby··on 14-year-old who voted in the general election, tells why he did it
That is one well-spoken 14 year old.
barnaby··on Is an MBA a Plus or a Minus in the Startup World?
It was a very good plug for the authors' own classes that he teaches (link in the last paragraph).
barnaby··on Hearing prayer shuts off believers' brain activity
Amazing they didn't mention religion as off-topic.

I don't see how this is interesting to a hacker. It's interesting to a redditor, but that's why I don't go there.

barnaby··on Total victory for open source software in a patent lawsuit
>>> The whole point of patents was to increase innovation not stifle it

Don't tell the lobbyists that. They've worked really hard to make sure that the point of patents (and all IP law) is to protect large companies from innovative newcomers on the market.

barnaby··on Why doesn't Windows include native PDF reader support?
Interesting that after all this time MS still haven't fixed this bug. I mean, I realize the patch is probably a business agreement rather than some code, but still.
barnaby··on Hearing prayer shuts off believers' brain activity
What does this have to do with hacking, tech, or startups? Why was this posted on HN?
barnaby··on Window indicators for Ubuntu ("windicators")
Why do I have the creeping suspicion that you haven't ever even used Ubuntu, and are just using this as a platform for your Mac fanboyism?

I LOVE Mac, but let me tell you, with this latest release, I LOVE Ubuntu more!

barnaby··on Window indicators for Ubuntu ("windicators")
Iterating on your product, like Canonical are doing with Ubuntu, makes a system that's BETTER than anything that ever came before. I couldn't wait to upgrade to 10.04 because so much new goodness.

It's like they're a lean startup, and this kind of stuff builds buzz that keeps them in the news. I suspect that their newsworthiness can only help in increasing marketshare.

barnaby··on Window indicators for Ubuntu ("windicators")
I like that! Put more stuff in the title bar of the app.

Except, in Netbook Edition when you expand an application you no longer see its title bar.

barnaby··on The Bugs In Ubuntu 10.04
I just did a fresh install of Ubuntu on my netbook, and I'm impressed. Things that didn't work before in previous releases (like the camera which I used to have to configure, or skype sound which I had to go through several opaque sounding options before I guessed the right one) JUST WORKED.

Yes, there are a few green technologies, as the author points out, but I'm very happy to see this level of innovation, especially in the "social from the start" space. They're not just innovating, they're leading the pack.

Very positive experience so far.

barnaby··on John Resig inducted into the RIT Innovation Hall of Fame
Me too. RIT is a fantastic school, arguably one of the best if you're going into technical domains like engineering or software.

Rock on!

barnaby··on Ubuntu 10.04: First Thoughts
Agreed. They're competing at a whole new level now, having surpassed Windows in usability, functionality, and aesthetics a long time ago, they have their sites set on competing with Apple. If they're going to copy anything, it's going to be from the higher benchmark OS X has set than from Windows.
barnaby··on Seven Reasons to Upgrade to Ubuntu Lucid Lynx
>>>I tried the beta on a laptop and a desktop,

It's labeled Beta because things don't work quite right yet. I find that waiting 3 days is usually enough to get a stable as hell release.

Of course, I'm going to a release party today and am upgrading, so no waiting for me.

barnaby··on The mess Django's in
Can't say I agree with this either.
barnaby··on Tell HN: I got screwed by my employer
Everyone should have a side-project like yours, it's normal. Every employer should attempt to stop their employees from having such side projects (unless they own them, like Google's 20% thing). That's also normal.

Just keep doing stuff on the side and don't tell them. They're not paying you enough to own you. Maybe they're paying you enough to slow you down, but never enough to own you.

barnaby··on [dead]
If they were raised to be the "self esteem generation" then what does it say about their parent's generation and its parenting skills (or lack thereof)?
barnaby··on Is Windows 7 finally halting the Mac migration?
The article isn't about existing marketshare, it's about the trend in how that marketshare is changing. This is the first time in a LONG time that Windows isn't losing marketshare to Mac and Linux.

That's a fact. The speculative part here is Why. Is it that Windows 7 doesn't suck? For all we know, Microsoft could have a new ad campaign, or had bought a sales lead sheet made of gold.

Time will tell, but I predict this is not a permanent reversal in the longstanding trend.

barnaby··on SEC and Pornography: Workers Spent Hours on Porn Sites Instead of Stopping Fraud
Wow! I mean, I work remotely, using my own laptop, and once in a while I'll look at porn while I should be working, and I always feel guilty about it. It's certainly not often, but I can't imagine how brazen one has to be to do this while at an office, on a company computer. Wow!
barnaby··on Ubuntu 10.04 Appearance Changes vs Ubuntu 9.10
I totally can't wait! 7 days left!
barnaby··on Why I Hate Adobe
I hate Adobe flash and all, but does the author know that if he installed Ubuntu instead of XP then he wouldn't be having these problems? The install process there is very quick and ad free.

It's 2010 for Pete's sake! Friends don't let friends suffer with Adobe's crap on XP.

barnaby··on Do Big Banks Control the US Government?
Is the sky blue?

I mean, duh. Not only do Banks purchase a large amount of control (e.g. the Government and get bailouts without strings attached) but also the bill being discussed now to put strings on them also gives them a virtual monopoly in financing by making it more difficult for anyone to be an angel investor.
