barnaby··on Jacob Appelbaum, Wikileaks editor, detained by US customs
As the saying goes "Don't you get it? It doesn't matter who you vote for, Government always wins!"
barnaby··on Ask HN: What technologies do you use in your startup?
We use Django, Linux (Ubuntu for both servers and developer machies), PostGIS database, memcache, Apache, etc. and of course Eclipse, Trac, etc. etc.

Haven't reached 1M hits per day yet, but I'm about to experience a bit of preemptive load testing to find out where the initial problem spots may be.

barnaby··on Ask HN: Best Startup City - Outside the USA?
Warsaw Poland!

I live in San Francisco, but I have to say: Warsaw is a super cosmopolitan city (though half of that is Turks), still relatively affordable, very high level of education, and it's the fastest growing economy in Europe.

Not to mention, the amount of foreign investment pouring into Warsaw is just ridiculous.

barnaby··on Ask HN: Does anyone still use IRC?
Totally. I help out on the #ubuntu channel, and get help on the #python channel.

I avoid #politics

barnaby··on What’s Really Going on in the VC Industry? What Does it Mean for Startups?
$1mm for software development, and servers, and bandwidth, and all that $9mm for marketing $10mm for sales and business development
barnaby··on Windows XP will never die
That's a good summary. I'm going to encourage my competitors to keep thinking like that. If I'm lucky they'll be sufficiently slowed down, and kept out of touch with the market needs of most users (who will have kept upgrading) that it won't be hard for me to eat their lunch.
barnaby··on PAM Vulnerability in Ubuntu allowing root access
Thank you for posting this... I often ignore doing updates because they're just not as interesting as other things I'm doing. This kicked my butt into gear to install the updates.
barnaby··on Python 2.7 released
Looks like a nice batch of new features added.
barnaby··on .NET Culture Shock
Seriously?

I hate trolls like you. A lot of us work really hard on making it the best damn platform ever, and it is, and then some quack who doesn't know anything says "it's just like Windows 95" which shows that they didn't even bother to try it out, or take the tour on ubuntu.com or even watch a recent video of the latest release on youtube. And that just sucks the fun out of life.

Please, actually take a look at it before saying something ridiculous.

barnaby··on Ask HN: Anyone using Python 3 in production?
Ditto. I do mostly Django development, so I'm tied to 2.6 for the moment, but I'll upgrade the second that I can.

Also, Ubuntu ships with 2.6 and I'm too lazy to switch

barnaby··on .NET Culture Shock
The entire "open source doesn't look as good" myth died a long time ago... at least 3 Ubuntu releases ago.
barnaby··on Large Problems in Django, Mostly Solved: Delayed Execution
Do scheduling tools in a web framework protect you from having to write threading code yourself? Or is it for a completely separate kind of side-process than when I would want to write threads in my web app code?

Also, is that like Quarts in the Spring Framework?

barnaby··on Misreading Tehran: The Twitter Devolution
Often it's the most obvious things that we most frequently fail to see....

Especially if we're actually looking for something different, like a raison d'être for social media in politics.

barnaby··on [dead]
cool, will look for it there, and upvote. ;-) HTH
barnaby··on [dead]
Is this your startup?

I would definitely upvote this on reddit or digg... but I don't think it fits in on hacker news.

barnaby··on Wikileaks founder Julian Assange hunted by pentagon over massive leak
While I agree that we should be skeptical towards the noise Wikileaks is making, we should always be skeptical towards the noise any government is making. Since Wikileaks is one of the best tools with which to take a skeptical look at the hype generated by a government's PR machine(s) I think it's great that news sources are rebroadcasting the noise being made by Wikileaks.
barnaby··on Dell's list of why to buy one with Ubuntu
Have you tried the new Ubuntu One Music store? It's not bad to start with and is rapidly improving. Plus offers cool features like cloud storage of your music collection (ultra-portable, take your music wherever you go).
barnaby··on Condé Nast's shocking business model for imgur [pic]
hey, OP here:

Can anybody confirm this? Even if it's not true, it's a brilliant idea for a business model to increase ad revenues of a service.

Also, Has anybody found the 10x figure for people clicking on pictures to be true?

barnaby··on Estimates of oil spill officially DOUBLED
While I agree that BBC is better, I find I've been reading Al Jazeera more than either CNN or BBC lately. The quality is close enough, and AJ has a very different view of the world, and I really enjoy that.
barnaby··on Ask HN: How come so many of you know about stocks/finance ?
It's a complex system. A good gacker loves a complex system.
barnaby··on What Happens To Blogging When Twitter Goes Down
it's "microblogging"
barnaby··on Iphone 4.0 official video
Ah the Irony: a sarcastic comment about downvoting gets downvoted.

Is there an algorithm to figure out what will get downvoted? Or is it totally random?

barnaby··on Iphone 4.0 official video
Oh yeah, hilarious... In a very troubling kind of way.
barnaby··on Poll: What is HN made of?
lol, awesome!
barnaby··on Poll: What is HN made of?
It's refreshing to take polls on community-driven technology news sites that don't always have Cowboy Neal as an option.
barnaby··on The Density of Smart People
Thank you for posting this. As a recent transplant to SF this warms my heart.
barnaby··on Will windows C++ die?
People still write desktop apps?
barnaby··on Taking the LOL out of the GOP
That part showing the submission was hilarious: "The government should never give you up, never let you down, never run around and desert you. Never make you cry, never say goodbye, never tell a lie and hurt you" I would upvote that on a gov 2.0 website.
barnaby··on The Windows Era is over...
In other news, water is wet, and Generalissimo Francisco Franco is STILL dead.
barnaby··on Will windows C++ die?
I would ask the opposite question. Why are y'all still using C++? C _is_ faster from what I understand, and Java is basically a better, safer replacement for C++ (and equally as fast on big enough applications).

Steve Yegge has some great thoughts about how C++ should die, in favor of Java (not that he likes Java either, though he loves the JVM).
