barnabask··on PostgreSQL DBaaS vendor comparison and calculator
For a hobby project that I wouldn't expect to monetize, $200 is too much, I totally agree. For a side project that makes some passive income however, I would hope to start out under $50 and scale up as needed.

Thanks Graphguy, I didn't know about that. I'll check it out. Finding out about other options was part of my motivation of putting this out in the world.

I totally agree. But, I wrestled with putting the AWS numbers at the 1-year commitment level when none of the other vendors have that requirement. In the end I decided that was the level of commitment I'd put toward a side-project.

Good suggestion, I'll work on it, thanks!

I'm trying to keep the comparison apples-to-apples, and I believe only their dedicated instances ($50 and up) provide the PostGIS extension. That's kind of a requirement for the projects I'm interested in, and it seems like a strange omission.

Edit: just added ElephantSQL, the update should be out in a few minutes.

barnabask··on Average Is Boring: How Similarity Kills a Meme's Success
The irony of a scientific paper dissecting the popularity of "Socially Awkward Penguin" is thick.

I'm reminded of the cartoon where a man is feeding money into a vending machine labeled "Gullibility Test $1.00"
barnabask··on Show HN: Papa Parse 3
Given the jaunty tone of the documentation, I really think they missed an opportunity to somehow have a "Beard Papa" version. Randomly inserts cream puff ingredients or something.
barnabask··on Facebook acquires Oculus VR
Actually, this is the glimmer of hope. eBay bought Skype in 2007 for $2.5 billion hoping for "synergy". It left a lot of people scratching their heads. When they sold Skype to MSFT for $8.5 billion 5 years later then it didn't seem like such a bad idea. It didn't ruin Skype. Hopefully Facebook will hold on to their new plaything for a while, then sell it off.

Question is: will we like the next buyer more? Does it even matter?

barnabask··on Id Software founder John Carmack resigns
I felt the same way when he was doing Armadillo Aerospace too. There are more people than JC who have said: "I invented some cool tech, made a lot of money, started a family, and also I think I'll start a rocket company on the side." How much time/energy to these people have? This is like a thing now.
barnabask··on Fontwalk
On one hand I think this is an innovative presentation, and I enjoyed the creativity. Also I like fonts.

On the other hand, (and this is a critique of scrolling/parallax navigation in general), as a user I always feel like I'm doing this wrong. It feels like I'm a cameraman with one of those old-timey hand-cranked movie cameras from the Charlie Chaplin days where the skill was in keeping the shutter speed constant but I'm doing it wrong and everybody is walking around at a weird speed.

The ability to reverse the animation by scrolling up is novel, and maybe going at my own pace is the idea. But personally I would rather click next and let the transition happen normally. Maybe Powerpoint has made me lazy.

barnabask··on Google's Definition of 'Literally'
When I literally want to use the word "literally" literally, I will now say "non-figuratively", as in "I non-figuratively cannot believe it's come to this."
barnabask··on Show HN: Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe on Angular and Firebase
Ultimate Tic tac toe, check. Angular, check. Firebase, check. GitHub, check. I cooked exactly this recipie a month ago: https://github.com/Barnabas/tictac9x.

I'm not complaining; delighted actually. This game is a perfectly natural combination of these technologies. I imagine this happens all the time. Good job.
