barista··on Google Correlate - Draw
"Please sign in to use this tool." That's all I see when I am not signed in. Too confident on Google's part that the people will always be signed in or do they actually need any personal info to use this tool?
barista··on Cloud server showdown: Amazon AWS EC2 vs. Linode vs. DigitalOcean
There are other studies that have compared the offerings on multiple benchmarks as well. Here's the one I was referring to: https://zapier.com/engineering/quick-redis-benchmark-aws-vs-... see the comparison for yourself on multiple benchmarks.
barista··on Cloud server showdown: Amazon AWS EC2 vs. Linode vs. DigitalOcean
Well AWS is slow is not surprise, there was an article on HN in last couple of weeks that pitted Azure against AWS and AWS was faster hands down. So this is no surprise at least to me.
barista··on Facebook Android app sends phone number to Facebook servers without consent
It's more of Android's fault letting this happen than Facebook's.
barista··on Facebook Android app sends phone number to Facebook servers without consent
Well what it also means is that its not just Facebook who does it. Many other apps you have installed are probably doing this as well without you knowing about it.
barista··on Facebook Android app sends phone number to Facebook servers without consent
It's wrong to expect user to read them. No wonder Android is a malware haven
barista··on Go read: fast Google Reader clone in AngularJS with Go on App Engine
hmmm odd didn't for me. works on IE 11 though. Nice work. Love the layout. I might switch to newsblur just because of this :)
barista··on Go read: fast Google Reader clone in AngularJS with Go on App Engine
Looks nice a few bugs when trying out with IE 10 though. Filters at the top don't work. Also a way to scope down to only a single RSS source would be nice.
barista··on Ativ Book 9 Plus, 3200x1800, Haswell, "12 hours" battery
What do you mean windows doesn't support it?
barista··on Ativ Book 9 Plus, 3200x1800, Haswell, "12 hours" battery
Samsung has put out some very appealing hardware in recent times. I won't be surprised if they pressurize other PC makers just like they did in case of android
barista··on Quick Redis Benchmark: AWS vs. Azure
Interesting that Windows Azure comes up at the top not only purely in performance but also in the price performance ratio as well.
barista··on iOS 7
Maybe that explains the similarities in Windows phone and ios7 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DM8NSSzxNGM
barista··on A new Gmail inbox
Heck outlook.com/Hotmail has had it for a while. I don't get what the big deal is.
barista··on A new Gmail inbox
Outlook.com/Hotmail has had this for a while now and ?I love it. Good to see Gmail finally catching up to it.
barista··on At Google Conference, Cameras Even in the Bathroom
It's funny how title has changed to be a flame bait now. Glass is one of the new things that Google is introducing and at the Google IO where you expect Google enthusiasts, why is it surprising to see a lot of Glass wearers?

Glass of course has privacy issues and I will not be comfortable speaking to anybody who is wearing one. It's at least 100 times more nerdy as the Bluetooth headset but those issues aside, you should totally expect to see these at Google conference.

barista··on The new Google Hangouts will not support XMPP
Windows 8 and the windows phone 8 messaging apps bring a bunch of these together very nicely. My usage of IM (which includes SMS and facebook messaging) has gone up significantly ever since I switched.
barista··on Google CEO Is Tired of Rivals, Laws, Wants to Start His Own Country
As a company whose goal is to make money can you blame them? It's the people who naively believe in the propaganda.
barista··on Internal Microsoft email: Next Xbox will work even when your Internet doesn’t
Exactly. That it will require always on connection was a speculation and this one is too. Why not wait a few weeks to find out for real? I think May 21st is when they reveal it.
barista··on Elon Musk admits Tesla's math was wrong
First they did it with the roadtrip range calculations and now this one. Credibility is hard earned easily lost you know.
barista··on Google releases some Glass source code
Not blaming you. You did what you were paid to do. What I am disappointed at is the fact that Google chose to only open the code that it HAD to do. It did choose the mechanism that made it easier to consume but that is besides the point.

No point arguing here. Not trusting Google to do the right thing these days anyways.

barista··on Google releases some Glass source code
must be the case otherwise why would they not release the Glass platform code? The kernel code is not that interesting anyways.
barista··on Google releases some Glass source code
It is sad to see Google get into the technicalities of things rather than doing the right thing in the spirit of doing so.
barista··on Microsoft Azure Sales Top $1 Billion, Challenging Amazon
Even if they did, they probably don't add to the 1B figure as they are free
barista··on Facebook Home
This takes what Windows Phone did with People hub and applies it to the whole phone instead of restricting it to an area of the phone. Of course people hub brought over people from twitter, linkedin, etc. as well so is much more comprehensive than this.
barista··on Apple’s Jony Ive Pushing iOS Interface Team For ‘Flat’ Design
Dismissing Microsoft's metro design by calling Windows 8 is a typical example of a straw man that you get to see here on HN. Flat design as it is done in the Metro UI on Windows 8 is gorgeous particularly on touch based machines. The fact that there also exists an older UI is because of the legacy that Microsoft has to support It's the price you have to pay for being in business for 30 years. I clearly see the need to go to non-metro UI diminishing as new updates and apps come along. Command line UI lingered on for a while after windows 3.1 came and the legacy UI will probably have the same lifeline.
barista··on We're Building A Reader
It will be nice if this surfaces as an RSS feed rather than an email.
barista··on Seamless Transitioning from Google Reader to feedly
Windows Phone application please
barista··on Update from the CEO
I think this may sound crazy but android's days as a apremium OS are not as secure as they seem. Take Samsung out of the android picture and you will see that there is barely any device maker that is leading charge.

Add to that the pressure brought on by Microsoft which runs almost the same version of OS on its phone and PC. This will allow them to innovate much faster. Google wants to be there. So even though the brand name will stay, Android as n OS will evolve to what is Chrome today. Completely controlled by Google.

barista··on The Beautiful Table - communicating football statistics with D3.js
Does not work on IE :(
barista··on BlackBerry Shares Jump as Lenovo CEO Mentions Possible Deal
We have seen this movie before. Remember when HP bought Palm/WebOS? The intentions look good on paper but for a hardware company, it is hard to try and create an ecosystem by throwing money at it. And Blackberry is to even a pure software company its a mix of hardware, software and services, which would make it harder.

Lenovo has had good relationship with Microsoft, they should probably try and do what Nokia did.
