baran··on Ask HN: Please review my startup (fantasy sports mashup)
Really like the idea. Will be a great additional to cheat sheet sites like http://www.fftoolbox.com (I know the owners, which is why I use this particular link).

I cant tell you how many hours I've spend going through Waiver Wire lists to check and see if they are available in my leagues. Will definitely be using this when fantasy football starts back up again!

baran··on Revitalizing family's travel agency using affiliate-linked blog. Thoughts?
Obviously more blog posts coming. Just getting started, but notice the affiliate links to each post. Like it?
baran··on Ask HN: What are your goals for your startups in 2010?
I was told by during YC'10 our plans are too ambitious. Want to join forces?
baran··on Writing is Thinking
I first came to the realization that writing is thinking after trying to put my startup idea down in words, especially in a YC application format.
baran··on Ask HN: Examples where you make something people want, but are unable to profit?
I would argue that if a medical device/drug was developed for the third-world as opposed to being a developed world hand-me-down, it would be profitable. Good book on the topic "Fortune at the bottom on the pyramid".
baran··on Ask HN: What APIs do you wish existed?
APIs into hospitals medical data.
baran··on Ask HN: What industry needs technical innovation?
Healthcare, plan and simple.
baran··on Medical Records: Stored in the Cloud, Sold on the Open Market
Great article about the dangers of storing your medical record in the cloud. Companies are promising "free" software, but these companies profit by selling your info and subjecting you and your doctor to advertising. Also you know the people paying the most for the advertising are going to be front and center on the screen.

How is that for acting your best interest?

baran··on Ask HN: Does anyone know when winter's (march 2010) demo day will be?
Can I assume it would be the week of March 15th? Thanks for the help, my g/f is looking for a commitment out of me, and I'm hoping to be apart of YC :)
baran··on The Universal Law of Leverage
I think another take-home point is that you cant build a business model around too many outside partnerships (what the author calls leverage). Your business has to be solid enough to gain that initial traction then the outside partners will come.

It seems like Obama just got a nobel prize for the potential impact he can have on the global community.

Seems like it could be more pressure on an already pressured administration.

baran··on Making WiFi work at large conferences
Speaking of which just got back from Health 2.0, supposedly spent 100K for the wireless. It worked for a total of 1 hour over the course of two days.
baran··on Ask HN: Looking for advice on manufacturing a physical product
One of my good friends (graduate student) is getting started as a consultant doing this kind of work. He is one of the smartest hardware guys I know. He would be more than willing to do the job for a low fee, also he is my roomate so I'm sure I can get you a YC discount :) Check my profile for an email.
baran··on Health care: It’s time for technology
Very true. Healthcare is at a point where everyone thinks "Oh if we just added this..., healthcare would be so much better." This is flawed thinking which leads to over-spending and products which leave something to be desired.

The only constants are the patients and the physician, therefore technology should be built around that relationship.

baran··on Working hard is overrated
I think all successful people are guilty of this at some point. When people feel like they are up against the wall, they feel like they have to be constantly fighting, even though sometimes it just best to take a step back.
baran··on Brain Scans Reveal What You’ve Seen
The article is rather deceptive in what they meant by "reveal" what you have seen. Researchers first have to calibrate the neural activity in a person.

They give a person a picture of an apple, and record which neurons fire. Then show another apple and are able to determine that its an apple because the same neurons fired. Although a cool step, not quite what the article is promising.

baran··on Netflix Awards $1 Million Prize and Starts a New Contest
Crowdsourcing is customer development to the extreme. By placing R&D in control of the customers, only products which are useful are likely to emerge. More companies (especially those which high brand recognition) should be using this technique. It generates quality products for relatively low costs.
baran··on Study Gives High Marks To Retailers' Clinics
A free marketplace is absolutely crucial to fixing healthcare. The consumers (patients) have to be at the center of the entire system. When you give the consumers the money, they will make informed decisions. This will lead to physicians providing better service for lower costs. That is why this model works so well. Nice video.
baran··on Study Gives High Marks To Retailers' Clinics
I have to disagree with this. I think this is an industry that is ready for hackers to make a difference.

Many of you are very familiar with the technology that is in place in medical record systems, actually you will find the technology laughable. A technology upgrade would create a major improvement for healthcare systems.

The healthcare system in this country HAS to change. It is not a question or else it will bankrupt our country. If healthcare is not in need of quality hackers I don't know what is.

baran··on Study Gives High Marks To Retailers' Clinics
This is the healthcare of the future.

The basic care that you receive will come from a physician assistant/nurse practitioner. This dramatically cuts down on cost while mantaining an adequate level of care. Physicians are going to continue to become more and more specialized. Which leads to physicians only providing specialized/unique treatments.

baran··on Shut up, Brain. Stop Thinking About Cool Shit.
I agree. You have to pursue what you have a passion and obsession for. This is how you become great.
baran··on Old-Model TVs Are So Toxic, You Can't Give 'Em Away. Literally.
Yea old TVs and CRT Monitors...
baran··on Shut up, Brain. Stop Thinking About Cool Shit.
You mention you need partners. Do you think one person is more important than the other to the success of the business?
baran··on Do American doctors get paid too much?
Dont forget about medical malpractice. This insurance has gone through the roof in the last 10-15 years, many times dramatically eating into doctors salaries.

Also remember doctors have peoples lives in their hands. I dont understand how people could think they are overpaid.

baran··on Do American doctors get paid too much?
This McKinsey report shows the best breakdown of costs that I have seen:

baran··on The trouble with non-profits
Grameen Bank, http://www.grameen-info.org/, one of the largest microfinance ventures which you all have been discussing.
baran··on The trouble with non-profits
This is one of the reasons why non-profit companies are flawed. There are no incentives in place for monetary gain. Non-profits are good at raising awareness, not being a sustainable entity.

If someone wants to make a difference and change world (especially developing countries), I believe there has to be financial incentives : social entrepreneurship.

baran··on Five Advantages of Hiring Gen Y Employees
Two main qualities of Gen Y employees -- increased drive for knowledge and better efficiency. The advent of the internet has taught this generation that these characteristics are crucial to success.
baran··on Ask HN: Should you release many products to see what takes off?
Customer development - find out what someone is willing to pay for.
