bandrami··on Anthropic says Alibaba illicitly extracted Claude AI model capabilities
If it's streaming an uncopyrightable product, absolutely. This isn't even a gray area.

I'm curious why you think you cannot re-stream a public domain stream.

bandrami··on Anthropic says Alibaba illicitly extracted Claude AI model capabilities
Postage stamps have specific legal protection from duplication. The output of an LLM is not itself eligible for any legal IP protection.
bandrami··on Anthropic says Alibaba illicitly extracted Claude AI model capabilities
The output of Claude is not eligible for copyright protection. I'm not sure how the analogy of bootlegging DVDs would work, given that.
bandrami··on Anthropic says Alibaba illicitly extracted Claude AI model capabilities
Oh wow it must suck to have an LLM creator rip off your IP for their own gain
bandrami··on Extreme Heat conference cancelled due to extreme heat warning
I have a proposal to place a small, intelligent demon in every windowsill in the UK...
bandrami··on Prompt Injection as Role Confusion
More people should read that Ken Thompson piece about backdooring the original C compiler
bandrami··on Prompt Injection as Role Confusion
I also kind of assume any Chinese model has a deeply embedded behavior to flag data the MSS might find interesting and do some kind of innocuous exfil of that if it is allowed any Internet access.
bandrami··on Codex logging bug may write TBs to local SSDs
A few years ago I noticed a junior dev was creating a lot of one-file, two-branch git repositories and I asked him why. He said he wanted to run a diff on two versions of a file that wasn't in version control, so he would make a branch with each version and run git diff.

I think about that a lot lately.

bandrami··on Prompt Injection as Role Confusion
Maybe I'm missing something but does this idea need a "theory"? There's zero sideband here; everything is just context. "Injection" is just kind of baked in to the design.
bandrami··on An Embedded Linux on a Single Floppy
I'm pretty sure I specifically remember I had two disks in my dorm room, and had to buy a pack of 16 from Radio Shack or somewhere.
bandrami··on Codex logging bug may write TBs to local SSDs
So there's this amazing thing called a symlink
bandrami··on Identity verification on Claude
Tom Sawyer at one point was painting a fence and trying to get people to help him and nobody would. Until he started saying "Oh I don't know, I'm not sure if I can let you help out".
bandrami··on There is minimal downside to switching to open models
If data security is an actual concern I don't think there's a solution other than biting the bullet and self-hosting.
bandrami··on An Embedded Linux on a Single Floppy
This is straining my geriatric memory, but I'm pretty sure my first install of Slackware in 1994 involved 18 floppy disks
bandrami··on Did my old job only exist because of fraud?
That's particularly egregious because there's a time-honored way to do this legally, namely have you shave yaks for 80 hours a week towards the end of the fiscal year (lot of USG contractors are skipping their vacations this summer for that exact reason).
bandrami··on Did my old job only exist because of fraud?
At the risk of injecting recent US politics into this, the shipyard I used to work at had five employees laid off under DOGE and replaced by the exact same individuals (there aren't actually that many naval architects in the US), now working as contractors at a higher base pay. I feel like there's a lot of that out there.
bandrami··on Local Qwen isn't a worse Opus, it's a different tool
It's really not. When we switched from CVS to SVN I had to show ROI and when I we switched from SVN to git I had to show ROI and when we switched from Ada to Java I had to show ROI. When we switched from Xen to KVM I had to show ROI and when we switched from PAM realtime privileges to rtkit I had to show ROI. When we switched from chroots to LXC I had to show ROI, when we switched from LXC to docker I had to show ROI, and when we switched from docker to podman I had to show ROI.

If you can't show ROI there's literally no reason to ever switch anything.

bandrami··on Local Qwen isn't a worse Opus, it's a different tool
I think this goes beyond "vibes" to cargo-culting. It's why nobody's ever able to actually show ROI from LLMs
bandrami··on SteamOS Linux 3.8 released as stable
Everything's ultimately based on a rolling distro; Debian is frozen from Sid and Fedora (and ultimately RHEL) are frozen from Rawhide.
bandrami··on SteamOS Linux 3.8 released as stable
When you maintain systems long enough you realize that's a feature rather than a bug
bandrami··on I Hate Compilers
Generative algorithms have been studied for decades now and while they have led to some interesting results they're a bad fit for LLMs because there's no such thing as a "plausible" binary: a small perturbation yields an unusable result.
bandrami··on Midjourney Medical
If this can image a fetus in utero they're already cutting themselves off from India as a market
bandrami··on Midjourney Medical
I mean, Michael Jordan did play for the White Sox for a hot second
bandrami··on Ask HN: Has anyone replaced Claude/GPT with a local model for daily coding?
This is the part of LLMs I may just be too old to "get" because I can't imagine what people are doing that looking up command line switches is some kind of time suck they worry enough about to find a way to automate
bandrami··on Why do commercial spaces sit vacant? (2025)
Georgism FTW
bandrami··on Why do commercial spaces sit vacant? (2025)
Humans are not Pareto efficient.

If my wife and I are at the airport, and the gate agent offers me (and only me) an upgrade on the flight, your logic says I should take it since that's strictly better than both of us flying economy.

bandrami··on Calvin and Hobbes and the price of integrity
This reminds me of an old piece I really love about Fred Rogers, who faced many of the same pressures with exactly the same integrity:

bandrami··on Leaked OpenAI financials show $38.5B loss and compute burn
Compute is both rivalrous and excludable so it can't be a public good in an economic sense
bandrami··on But yak shaving is fun (2019)
We did that exact setup in college! We ran serial cables out our windows and along the outer wall to the other two rooms. It was triumphant.
bandrami··on Ask HN: Has anyone replaced Claude/GPT with a local model for daily coding?
This was true a decade ago; unfortunately Google has become more or less useless for most purposes at this point
