bananamerica··on Stripe increasing "instant payout" fees by 50%
I interpreted it as a increase in the fee.
bananamerica··on LLM-generated code must not be committed without prior written approval by core
I use GPT for AutoHotkey scripts for personal use. It fixes things Windows can't do natively. I used it briefly for a shell script on Linux but I don't use Linux much these days. When I used Linux daily I had a folder full of scripts I either adapted or copy pasted from the internet. I can't program but I can copy and paste and make minor changes to make a simple script suitable to me. GPT makes a big difference on my day-to-day, Windows 10 is under my control and I didn't need to learn AHK scripting. I'm not in IT, I'm just a regular person with a Hacker News account.
bananamerica··on A simple MUD server in Python which can be run on a Raspberry Pi
That's awesome, thanks!

I am aware of Inform 7, I think it is awesome. A few months ago I made a quick demo using Inklescript[1], which I found simpler and more suitable to my project (a Star Trek adventure). Inform 7 remains something I wish to explore in the future when I need something more complex.

Thanks! ;)

That is already possible with ASCII graphics or graphically at the client level.

This is more of a social problem than a technical problem. MUD blind players are extremely distrustful of innovation because, more often than not, innovation means graphics or custom clients they cannot freely alter and manipulate.

And they don't wanna be left behind. They wanna use their own client on a telnet connection because that is already suited for them. Many QOL features for the sighted can have a negative impact on the blind. Any attempt at engaging that audience must first convince them that you won't leave them behind.

One simple way to benefit the blind is by making sounds integral to a game, with clear cues for everything.

I'm not a programmer, just a humanities nerd on Hacker News. AI would be indeed bad for that at the moment. It could be an endless source of fluff, amusement, and roleplay hooks. In many MUDs, you are required to stay in character. But AI is no good for anything of mechanical consequence.

But it doesn't matter, the MUD community seems already annoyed by bad AI proposals. It would take a good and consistent communication effort to overcome that.

Web MUD clients exist.

I'm really not sure if modernizing MUDs is worth the effort. Actual MUD gamers will look at it with either contempt or distrust, especially blind players. And regular gamers are unlikely to play a text game. I could make a game with a MUD sensibility or even use a MUD engine, but I would never call it a MUD. MUD players want more of the past and I'm not really interested in that.

Just be careful when approaching actual current MUD gamers with that idea. They're largely cynical towards AI. I don't really blame them, a lot of people coming at /r/mud with new ideas are either lazy, misinformed, or crypto bros.
bananamerica··on Show HN: Boardzilla, a framework for making web-based board games
I indeed use a 1080p monitor for browsing.
bananamerica··on Anime is a $25B industry that pays its animators pennies
It has a 90s feel that I appreciate.

I don't think anyone's criticizing or advising against the use of Discord for the things it's adequate for, but rather its proeminence in the webpage, which communicates that you'll have to go to Discord to get more substantial information on the project. Having to talk to people is a source of stress and attrition for introverts. Not everyone needs or wants to have to modulate their language to a different social environment every time they need clarification.
bananamerica··on Anime is a $25B industry that pays its animators pennies
The animation in Castlevania is in fact very good.
bananamerica··on Apple Vision Pro available for pre-order
It's not every day that I read someone complain about a product not being expensive enough.
bananamerica··on Americans are fake and the Dutch are rude (2022)
Just look at how some primates use an abundance of facial muscles to establish they're not a threat. Or how having the local accent can show you are not an invader. The sing-songy greetings, the smiles, etc, can be read as demonstrations that you are not a threat. Americans have to do that in almost all times and contexts.
bananamerica··on Americans are fake and the Dutch are rude (2022)
I don't believe Americans are fake, but I do believe that Americans are trained since an early age to display at all times that they're not a threat, and that is kind of sad.
bananamerica··on Gentoo goes Binary

There are many non-tech submissions on Hacker News.

From the guidelines:

> On-Topic: Anything that good hackers would find interesting. That includes more than hacking and startups. If you had to reduce it to a sentence, the answer might be: anything that gratifies one's intellectual curiosity.

bananamerica··on Invisible Bunnies That Power World of Warcraft (2017)
If you believe that's a good website, I disagree but that's fine by me. Just don't fit my dislike into some crazy American narrative. I truly and genuinely believe it's a bad website solely due to what I perceive to be consistently terrible and cringeworthy reporting I'm not willing to share. This has absolutely nothing to do with politics.
bananamerica··on Invisible Bunnies That Power World of Warcraft (2017)
I feel that you wrote about a lot of things that are nothing to do with anything I wrote. I don't live in a alternate reality where Kotaku has great content. I'm not sure why you do. I read other websites that are equally "woke", but with good content. Polygon is one, just to give an example.

As a leftist Black progressive from Brazil, I don't need to pretend I like a shitty website just to appease to crazy American prejudices.

bananamerica··on Invisible Bunnies That Power World of Warcraft (2017)
Oh Kotaku was a low quality website long before that.

And of course I'm being truthful why would you just assume otherwise? Do I need to send you my Brazilian RG and CPF? The internet is so tiresome. Just open the website, read it. It's really bad. This is not a fucking narrative.

bananamerica··on Invisible Bunnies That Power World of Warcraft (2017)
I understand that you would think that given the assumed context on this website but I'm not even American and the gamer gate thing was very distant from me, something foreign I read about in the news. I have absolutely no issue with this website's politics or any kind of agenda. Kotaku took a turn for the worse specially after the departure of Jason Schreier. I've read Kotaku for years, and I largely agree with Kotaku's political views and I was never part of any ridiculous gamer gate movement.

It's just a shallow website that is largely made of reposts, low effort sensationalism, poor journalism, and articles that could have been a Tweet. I do not repost it because it is extremely low quality even when it is the original source. But that subject was interesting so I wanted to find another source to share.

bananamerica··on Invisible Bunnies That Power World of Warcraft (2017)
Not at all in my case. I have no beef with their politics. Kotaku is just a terrible website due to its shallow reporting and almost all its content has a better source that is often linked in the article. They are also needlessly inflammatory and not at all careful in their journalism. Again, this is 1000% not about politics.
bananamerica··on The surprising connection between after-hours work and decreased productivity
Is that really surprising to anyone?
bananamerica··on Invisible Bunnies That Power World of Warcraft (2017)
Can anyone point to a better source for this so I can't share it with people? Kotaku is the TMZ of gaming and I never share it, but underlying content is good on this article.
bananamerica··on Sao Paulo: A city with no outdoor advertisements (2013)
I don't think you understand how copy and paste works... if the English Wikipedia can do it, I think article writers can do as well.
bananamerica··on Sao Paulo: A city with no outdoor advertisements (2013)
> Or should an article in Portuguese in a Brazilian newspaper write Deutschland instead of Alemanha?

What bizarre examples, those are entirely different words, I'm talking about a minor difference in acentuation. And I don't care what the rule is, it's disrespectful, it's an article, and copy and paste exists.

They even do it with proper names. You don't change proper names. The name is "Pelé", not "skin". So disrespectful.

bananamerica··on Bottles – Easily run Windows software on Linux
Sometimes Lutris doesn't work, so I use Bottles.
bananamerica··on Sao Paulo: A city with no outdoor advertisements (2013)
That is a minor thing, but I would love if people spelled our words right. The city is called "São Paulo", not "Sao Paulo", which makes for a completely different pronunciation. I get that they may not know how to type it, but anyone can copy and paste from Wikipedia.
