baldgeek··on Goldman Sachs Plans to Clear Bitcoin Futures When They Go Live
I plan to. The blockchain is here to stay no doubt. and I skimmed over the IOTA whitepaper, definitely very interesting
baldgeek··on Goldman Sachs Plans to Clear Bitcoin Futures When They Go Live
The bigger it grows the harder it will fall. The design/implementation of bitcoin as a currency is severely flawed.

Projects like Ethereum, Hyperledger, and IOTA have a more long term focus. Full Disclosure: I have no positions in any crypto but have been reading a lot. Also, in the midst of two courses that go that cover crytpocurrencies and blockchain tech.

1. https://www.coursera.org/learn/cryptocurrency 2. https://www.edx.org/course/blockchain-business-introduction-...

#1 gives a very good history of what a blockchain is, and how is implemented by bitcoin. This is enough to keep me away since I have learned about all the technical flaws:

#2 discusses blockchains, and consensus algorithms. This project shows lots of promise. They just added code that allows the consensus algorithm to actually be changed via a transaction, without a hard fork.

Bitcoin gets all the credit for introducing the world to the blockchain concept, but its far from a sound solution as a cryptocurrency.

baldgeek··on Ask HN: Does CryptoKitties network congestion prove smart contracts can't work?
Look into Hyperledger. They have a more longterm focus on blockchain and distributed ledger tech.
baldgeek··on iMessage on Android
While I admire the effort taken in setting a "rube-goldberg" set of software to achieve this, I see 2 major issues with this in the long term: 1. If this gains any popularity, Apple will change the iMessage protocol in such a way that breaks this, which will start a "cat and mouse" game should the maintainer(s) decide to keep this up to date 2. Projects like this encourage Apple to create products inside their sheltered, walled garden and not play nicely with others outside their garden.

Neither of these is a desirable mode of operation in the long term.

I give people several modes to reach me, some of which may incur SMS costs, most of which don't (FB Messenger, Hangouts, SMS). All of them are multiplatform/os. If they don't use one of those 3 methods, then oh well, they didn't really want to reach me. Or they call or email me if they really need to reach me that bad.

baldgeek··on Old Versions of Android Apps
I use a app called "Metal Pro" basically a thin-veneer or the mobile web version of facebook. Been using it for over a year now, and glad to not have the official bloated app.
baldgeek··on Saudi Billionaire Prince Alwaleed Predicts Bitcoin Will 'Implode' Like Enron
Doesn't take much to realize that "Bitcoin" itself will implode. Crytpocurrency in general will not. Which currency remains only time will tell.
baldgeek··on A statically typed, procedural language that looks like poorly written erotica
Rimshot
baldgeek··on Ask HN: Is the DEF CON conference worth it for security enthusiasts?
Black hat is worth it. DefCon is basically a post-BlackHat party.

When is it coming to Android? :)
baldgeek··on Roku debuts a new Streaming Stick with a quad-core processor
Now we just need someone to find out how to install other software on it. :)
baldgeek··on Etch-A-SDR: Odroid C1, Teensy 3.1 and RTL-SDR
Looks cool, hate to look a gift horse in a mouth. Can I get a part list/build plans for the HW side. This might be what actually gets me into playing with SDR. :)

Must be April 1st on his calendar.. LOL
baldgeek··on Wakeapp Call – Say hello to a whole new way to start your day
sounds like Wakie, but with more of defined(known) social connection as opposed to complete strangers: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wakie.andr...
baldgeek··on Please Scan My Towel: How I turned my hotel towel into my RSA conference badge
Like the punch line at the end. :)
baldgeek··on New Fitbit Blaze is here
I've been a fitbit user for a little over 2 years and have had two different devices from them(flex then charge HR). I like that it does one thing well. Keep me accountable for staying active, and i only have to charge it once every 4 days.
baldgeek··on Do you really need 10,000 steps a day?
Been using fitbit for over 2 years now (~ 7.5Million steps logged). Have the data being pushed to other web apps (MyFitnessPal, FitStudio, Higi, Acheivemint, Walgreens balance rewards). Also, trained up and ran 2 half-marathons in this time. Lost 60lbs so far, first 20lbs was from increased walking and diligent choices via calorie logging in MyFitnessPal. Fitbit is not the be all end all, but it definitely keeps me aware.
baldgeek··on PoloTech – The next evolution of wearable technology
Where's the android app? :)
baldgeek··on US in-flight Internet could be hacked, watchdog warns
This is complete BS. I work in IFE and we specifically are certified by the FAA to not be connected to flight controls.
baldgeek··on Get a free Jawbone/Fitbit/Misfit/Withings device from @addappio
thanks for listening. I'm already totally geeking out with a Fitbit flex and have given several other apps permission to its data. So I would love the opportunity to play with your stuff on Android
baldgeek··on Get a free Jawbone/Fitbit/Misfit/Withings device from @addappio
too bad they don't have an Android app yet :(
baldgeek··on Who's Using Ada? Real-World Projects Powered by the Ada Programming Language
Ada used to be basis for CS Curriculm at Cal Poly Pomona (Circa '92- '98). Ada teaches good practice. One prominent feature is that there is no implicit casting; Add a float and int, you get a compile error. It's good to know that you have to do exactly what you want and the compiler enforces this.
baldgeek··on Show HN: CallingVault, Google Voice for non-nerds
Is there a implementation on top of Google Voice, or a completely separate product?
baldgeek··on Why is it taking U.S. airlines so long to offer in-flight Wi-Fi?
I work at the largest IFE vendor in the world, and I can tell you that current satellite networking implementations would not be able to support a full aircraft. So if they did offer it, they would have to price it very high to keep an appropriate level of service.

I paid 30 Euros for 'net access on a lufthansa flight and only saw only 3 other people in the Economy cabin using it.
