baldgeek··on Why aircraft coffee pots cost so much
I used to software dev at the largest In Flight Entertainment (IFE) vendor, and can confirm that our hardware went thru a rigorous and expensive certification process.
baldgeek··on Ray Tracing with POV-Ray: 25 scenes in 25 days (2013)
any similiar tutorial series like this for Blender?
baldgeek··on Calacanis Live on Meta
Video is private now.
baldgeek··on Covid-19 mRNA myopericarditis: intravenous injection likely cause?
If a med was repurposed and proven to have widespread positive effects, it would literally be handed out like candy. Prolonging the pandemic benefits no one from either party. They both want their lost tax revenue back at the minimum. Hospitals, doctors, medical insurance companies want to get back to their core businesses: elective outpatient procedures and processing the minimum amount of claims.
baldgeek··on Covid-19 mRNA myopericarditis: intravenous injection likely cause?
He is far from qualified to make such an assessment. The link referenced seems to have expired, it would be nice to update it with a valid link, so that we can possibly read an observation from a more qualified source possibly.
baldgeek··on Covid-19 mRNA myopericarditis: intravenous injection likely cause?
Joe Rogan called this?!?, because that should be the first person you go to for medical expertise. A comedian/podcaster/MMA commentator??
baldgeek··on Ask HN: Committed weekly classes for CS/math/tech/finance?
I have taken CS/Tech courses on both edX and Coursera. They are very passive. I have participated in a forum a few times, most of the time I tend to seek out other resources when I tend to get stuck.
baldgeek··on Ask HN: Good React courses for a complete beginner?
https://www.codecademy.com/catalog https://www.codecademy.com/search?query=react

Those 2 places would be a good place to start to learn HTML/CSS/Javascript, then move forward into React

baldgeek··on Show HN: Historico, an iOS app to discover historical events happened today
Any plans for an android version?
baldgeek··on Dive – A tool for exploring each layer in a Docker image
love this tool. It helped me experiment and reduce the size of a docker image.
baldgeek··on Show HN: Torrenthistory – an open and legal torrent indexer
not sure what definition of "legal" they are using. I clicked Catalog, then 70, then 80, and found lots of "interesting" titles
baldgeek··on Setup a Mute Indicator Light for Zoom with Hammerspoon
Any cheaper HW for people who want to roll up their sleeves? I like the blink(1) but $30 seems a little high given the actual functionality. I do understand the time/development that went it into so it "just works".
baldgeek··on Adam Curry launches a new, open podcast directory
Just chiming from the Android Side. I enjoy Castbox (castbox.fm). Although , the one scummy thing they did recently, is they look for silence gaps then insert their own ads. I still use it, because I haven't found a good alternative on the Android side of the world
baldgeek··on Microsoft launches a deepfake detector tool ahead of US election
Fair point. But I think this effort still will provide some benefit to those that understand the "arms race" of deep fakes vs detectors that is now unfolding
baldgeek··on Zoom is now critical infrastructure – that’s a concern
The internet in general has become critical infrastructure for a while now. Yet it is not treated that way that is the root of the problem.
baldgeek··on RandalLinden/Doom-FX
so how we do build this into a ROM to play? Or that a question that can't be answered to due to "reasons" (piracy, legal, etc)
baldgeek··on Arizona man dies after self-medicating with chloroquine to treat coronavirus
Gotta love the telephone game, and click bait headlines. They ingested aquarium cleaner; basic high school chemistry tells you not judge one ingredient as a reason to ingest something. Also, common sense tells you that the product was designed for aquariums, not human consumption, so even without basic high school chemistry they should have not ingested it.

baldgeek··on Disneyland, Theaters, Casinos Exempted from Coronavirus Ban on Large Gatherings
As usual, big money talks and gets special treatment. Obviously, Newsom is not really that concerned about California's residents health if he called out those exemptions.
baldgeek··on The live coding language that lets you be an actual rock star
Sam Aaron has done several talks on Sonic Pi. It's an amazing piece of work. My favorite talk where he scratches the surface of the tech details was a 2018 talk at Goto : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLLwG_SN8oo

He also has saved several of his sessions on youtube.

baldgeek··on Used Alexa to Play Board Games and Now I Never Have to Play with My Family Again
Anyone making stuff like this for Google side of the fence (Google Assistant) ?
baldgeek··on Self-Driving Mercedes Will Sacrifice Pedestrians to Save the Driver
If you are interested in a bunch of ethical commentary regarding self-drving. Radiolab did a very interesting episode awhile ago: https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/radiolab/articles/drive...
baldgeek··on Sherpa – self-driving AI for your car
Any idea of what years/make of cars you will support?
baldgeek··on Drink attribute
Hmm.. sounds like AD was used at some event to store people's favorite drink and look them via AD. And they had to leave the code in since they put in a production release.

EDIT: just did some googling and its actually part of a RFC https://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc1274.txt. :)

baldgeek··on Meat Lab in Berkeley Pursue a Once-Impossible Goal: Kosher Bacon
not sure that is even worth pursuing; Part of Kosher principles is even the appearance of not being kosher (ie eating Kosher bacon, which looks like 'non-kosher' bacon) is frowned upon
baldgeek··on Lwan: A high-performance and scalable web server
Can anyone chime how this compares to nginx and openresty? Probably a dumb question , but I hope to gain some insight
baldgeek··on Ask HN: How to best catch up / learn about AWS and GCP
https://www.edx.org/school/aws

3 courses with hands-on exercises, and you can't beat the price either. They are also run by AWS Tech Training staff. I finished the "building" one, and I'm looking at starting deploying soon

baldgeek··on Board games for Software Developers
i play lots of stuff. Here's my complete history of plays a logged at BGG : https://www.boardgamegeek.com/plays/bymonth/user/baldgeek/su...

And for a small picture of some titles, here is 61 plays broken down by title in March of this year: https://www.boardgamegeek.com/plays/bygame/user/baldgeek/sub...

baldgeek··on Ask HN: How would you work offline on a bus ( or plane, or train )?
If you want to educate yourself more, you could register for some courses on edX.org or coursera.org. Both sites offer downloading of lectures and course materials. I did that for awhile until I got a more reliable 3g connection. I love my train commute and strive to make it at least 30% productive, the other 70% is watching Netflix, other just general web surfing, sometimes it approaches 50%. Either way I enjoy the time to explore new content, whether it be educational or pure entertainment.
baldgeek··on Ask HN: Best books/resources to learn about blockchain tech?
Course on Hyperledger, enterprise grade blockchain https://www.edx.org/course/blockchain-business-introduction-...

Course on cryptocurrency: https://www.coursera.org/learn/cryptocurrency

I have taken both, the coursera course actually walks thru some other data structures needed to build a blockchain, and points you in the direction of more heavy math if you want to go there.

Both of courses are solid introduction to blockchain tech. And best of all they are both free. :)

baldgeek··on Ask HN: Bitcoin Christmas reading
coursera has a course, and edX has course on enterprise blockchains

https://www.coursera.org/learn/cryptocurrency https://courses.edx.org/courses/course-v1:LinuxFoundationX+L...
