bake··on How Not to Explain Success
I wish someone would similarly test Malcolm Gladwell's body of work. It's encouraging to see the scientific method re-injected into the popular press.
bake··on Google Deactivates Web Search API
Here's the old home, with pricing laid out (missing from the new one): https://datamarket.azure.com/dataset/bing/searchweb#terms
bake··on Google Deactivates Web Search API
Here's the older link to the Bing Web Search API -- while the new page doesn't list actual prices, this one does in nice detail:

bake··on Google Deactivates Web Search API
Any idea on how best to get in touch with them?
bake··on Google Deactivates Web Search API
Google Custom Search is one option, but it has a limit of 10,000 queries per day and is very expensive compared to Bing ($5 per 1,000 queries).

I've migrated to Bing, myself -- no volume limits, generous free tier, and much cheaper than Google.

bake··on Google Deactivates Web Search API
Does anyone know of an API that returns pages related to any given URL? I'm looking for an alternative to Google's "related:..." search, which was only reliably accessible through Google Web Search (Google Custom Search is very expensive and has a limit of 10K queries per day).

For example: https://www.google.com/#q=related:http:%2F%2Fagiliq.com%2Fbl...

It returns pages related to any given page, and works at the specific page level (not just at the domain level, like SimilarWeb's API).

I've migrated to Bing for all other web search needs (way cheaper and without volume limits like Google Custom Search), but Bing does not offer a "related:..." equivalent as far as I can tell.

bake··on Are You More Likely to Be a Baker If You’re Named “Baker”?
I do appreciate baking -- I wouldn't claim to be a practitioner, aside from the pancake example above, but I have tremendous respect for the craft.
bake··on Are You More Likely to Be a Baker If You’re Named “Baker”?
Option 3 -- first name Baker.
bake··on Are You More Likely to Be a Baker If You’re Named “Baker”?
Thanks for your questions! It's very rewarding to be able to draw on the experiences I've worked so hard to build over a lifetime. To your questions:

- Do pancakes qualify as baked goods? If so, then yes.

- No, it's not my job. However, I do work with fintech and hence with banks and, on occasion, bankers...

- Baker is my first name, actually. Will need to contact Mr. Pelham to see how the first name / last name distinction is reflected in his analyses.

Here to answer any questions you may have.

- Baker

bake··on Show HN: Zappa – Serverless Python/Django on AWS Lambda
Fantastic! We had been considering using lambda, but were worried that doing so would irreversibly lock us into AWS. Being able to develop for lambda using standard web frameworks (django already being our favorite) goes a long way in increasing our willingness to use it.
bake··on Ask HN: New attempt at mobile markup – keep or bail?
Much, much better -- please do keep! In fact, I just deleted the old iOS app I was using for it and just saved the webpage to my homescreen instead.
bake··on Why Spotify Pays So Little
From another perspective, should artists all artists give up the same 30% to Spotify? Or should artists who benefit disproportionately from services like Discovery and Radio, presumably lesser-known artists, pay more?
bake··on Pixelapse is joining Dropbox
Pixelapse looks similar to what Drew described in his YC application, responding to the question "If you had any other ideas you considered applying with, feel free to list them. One may be something we've been waiting for.":

His response: ..."a wiki with version-controlled drawing canvases that let you draw diagrams or mock up UIs (Thinkature is kind of related, but this is more text with canvases interspersed than a shared whiteboard) to help teams get on the same page and spec things out better (we use Visio and Powerpoint at Bit9, which sucks)"

bake··on Apple Software Quality Questions
To add one to your list, HealthKit hasn't worked on my iPhone 6 for months -- loads no step counts, pulls no data from third-party apps (despite settings), and renders some apps completely unusable (e.g. Jawbone UP when trying to use the M8 coprocessor as the pedometer).
bake··on Workflow for iOS
Yes, but with more DIY options - 'Share Availability' is interesting, which loops through calendar invites on a specified day and grabs start and end times
bake··on Ether One: The Video Game That Tries to Simulate Dementia
Jonathan Franzen's book, The Corrections, contains some very vivid scenes & chapters through the eyes of a man suffering from dementia -- I can't speak to their accuracy, but they are very powerful.
bake··on How Magic Leap Is Creating an Alternate Reality
Any worse than on a touch screen?
bake··on How Magic Leap Is Creating an Alternate Reality
Good point, but some touch typing does happen with the keyboard in the field of vision, just not as the focal point -- when typing on a laptop and looking at the screen, for instance.
bake··on How Magic Leap Is Creating an Alternate Reality
If it works, Magic Leap will mark an entirely new era in machine-human interface. It could eliminate the need for screens, keyboards, and even other input devices like light switches and thermostats by turning any surface into a tactile interface. Why actually attach a piece of hardware to the wall when I can just render it there whenever I look in that direction? Why carry along a physical keyboard when I can just 'project' one on any desktop at hand?.

There's also an interesting health & wellness aspect to this -- could this be a way to free people working digitally from sitting at desks in front of screens all day?

This is, in my opinion, the most exciting technology in the popular press right now.

bake··on How Magic Leap Is Creating an Alternate Reality
This seems like the future for Google Glass -- those articles a few days back about how the program is waning / losing steam seem to overlook Magic Leap, which feels more like Google doubling down.
bake··on Little’s Law: An insight on the relation between latency and throughput
Very versatile -- It can also be applied to drug R&D organizations (one Dr. Jeffrey Low has proposed such an analysis)

bake··on Accelerate Excel – 100x faster spreadsheets
This may mean I can finally ditch windows on a VM and just use mac excel exclusively!
bake··on Accelerate Excel – 100x faster spreadsheets
Combining =index() and =match() seems to be less computationally intensive than =vlookup() -- give it a shot.

I've had entire days spent copying formulas down 5000 rows (x20-50 cols), copy, paste-values, and repeat. Can't wait to try this out, just signed up for the beta.

Another thought -- as someone who runs windows on a VM on my mac almost purely for excel purposes, this could enable me to go 100% mac. The biggest downfall to mac's excel seems to be a computation engine that's far behind the windows version.

bake··on The Legality of Ride Sharing in Aviation
Long overdue response, but this is really helpful -- thanks for laying it out.
bake··on The Legality of Ride Sharing in Aviation
Very true. Infinite risk, finite reward.
bake··on The Legality of Ride Sharing in Aviation
And if other pilots are like me, destination is often irrelevant -- I have a general intention/desire to fly (log hours, stay current, etc.), and I'll go wherever weather, time and budget permit.

If I want to log two hours of cross-country flight time on a given day, which I will do regardless of having a passenger, is it against regulation to let that ride-sharing passenger pick the destination and split the bill?

bake··on GoPro S-1
Have to imagine Q1 is a small quarter for them, sandwiched between Q4 holiday sales and Q2 return of summer/outdoor activities. Probably not indicative of full year performance.
