baggers··on Show HN: My Isometric Voxel Engine 6 Months Later
If you are into this kind of stuff do check out the following if you haven't already: http://procworld.blogspot.no/ http://www.atomontage.com/
baggers··on Exponential Growth (html5 demo)
And the pouet page: http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=62141 Runs best for me in chrome, but should work in firefox as well.
baggers··on How to Corrupt an SQLite Database File
Fine, but the FSF doesn’t think that SQLite is non-free software http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/SQLite#tab=Overview
baggers··on Learn Emacs and Lisp with simple, bite-sized screencasts
For videos that focus more on emacs itself check out this chap's youtube videos. He also has a decent haskell collection too.
baggers··on Carmack: Armadillo Aerospace in “hibernation mode”
Nitpick #2: Creeping Professionalism
baggers··on Why We Can No Longer Trust Microsoft
All areas of Ubuntu that report to Canonical/Amazon/etc can be disabled and/or uninstalled. I personally find this the optimal way from base install to get to a desktop I enjoy using but otherwise I would probably have a look at debian.
baggers··on Paul Dirac's handwritten notes for his PhD, the first ever on quantum mechanics
Very nice! ------ I'll throw another link into the pile. A 54min lecture on the life of Paul Dirac. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfYon2WdR40 The lecturer is very engaging and this a very approachable talk for those not versed in physics.
baggers··on Show HN: Chicken chicken chicken – chicken chicken programming language
Do check out the presentation (http://youtu.be/yL_-1d9OSdk) as he goes into a fairy bit of detail on the motivations and implementation of the project. Fairly moving actually
baggers··on This Is What Winning Looks Like – Afghanistan War Diary
> Vice is nothing but quality <

Like their waragi episode, where they spent a few scant minutes on the topic of the endemic drinking problem (which is very prevalent) and the entire rest filming drunk people and trying the brew themselves... oh and they sent a person that couldn't pronounce the name of the drink properly. Well done Vice. Quality

baggers··on Modern GPU
Cheers for the great work, I'm really looking forward to working through this.
baggers··on U.S. Secretly Obtains Two Months of A.P. Phone Records
Norway
baggers··on SpaceX Grasshopper Flies High
".from SpaceX’s hexacopter." They have all the nicest toys!
baggers··on Google Says the FBI Is Secretly Spying on Some of Its Customers
I have no idea of the answer to this question but I'd like to hear from you folks: Given that these lovely shiny devices aren't going away (phew!), is there a technological fix to being tracked?

I mean, signals need to reach the phone so the location of the phone needs to be known. What is out there that could allow us to use this awesome technology without essentially handing our every waking movement to a 3rd party who can be easily forced to hand the data over?

baggers··on How to generate random terrain
If you are interested in generating terrains with caves (or other formations with more that just a height detail) then I recommend following this chap http://procworld.blogspot.co.uk/ The technique is based on dual contouring a voxel field and his results are awesome. For info on how he went about it check posts from 2010 (most of it focuses on parallelization using cuda however)
baggers··on Thank You HN: From 30 people whose lives you saved
@chaseadam It would be quite nice to have an option to use this in a gittip sort of way. Also how do you go about finding people to donate to? I have contacts with a Ugandan Hospital and I'm sure others here have have worked on the ground with folks that would love to link up with you guys. Thanks for your awesome work and good luck
baggers··on My life as a Git
I'm looking at open-sourcing my DNA at some point. Partially for my own curiosity but also because we are in a time where companies are patenting genes and I'd like to see the open-source community put down a body of prior art.
baggers··on Ubuntu Core On The Nexus 7
The bright side of this push to get things running well on the nexus 7 is that these inefficiencies will have to be dealt with. I'm running this build the Nexus7 now and, yeah its slow, but as the goal for 13.04 is getting the performance and battery life acceptable, these developments 'should' leak back and help the whole Ubuntu experience. It might just be the itch required to get development focused on performance again.
baggers··on Curiosity rover: Martian solar day 2
Aye, I must admit I looked around the landscape for a bit and then spent a good 5 minutes just looking at the rover. It is quite beautiful.
baggers··on Vim, you complete me
Though this doesn't help with the holy wars, I do find it just fantastic that there are two editors that so many find, with an acceptable amount of playing, can be the near perfect tool for their craft. I played with vim first but never quite got a flow going...oddly enough I hit it off almost immediately with emacs, it was still damn confusing but I made much more progress much faster. I'm almost disappointed I didn't fall for Vim as it is always on any server I have to use and emacs muscle memory has only compounded my problem with Vim shortcuts! For those not fancying diving into vim or emacs are there any more traditional IDE's with a way to script new behaviours and have them feel native?
baggers··on 4 min Emacs screencast inspired by Bret Victor's Inventing on Principle
And there is an awesome Clojure interface for it called Overtone. http://vimeo.com/22798433
baggers··on To Elon Musk and the Model S: Congratulations
I'd also bet that Ariel did pretty well after the top gear review of the Atom.
baggers··on The mintBox, a Linux Mint computer
I second OpenElec, which is effectively a minimal OS which boots straight to XBMC. I threw it on my aspire revo and it ran beautifully while using under 300mb of HDD. It pulls media wirelessly from my server and I use the android XMBC Remote to control it. I would warn that it probably worked so well for me because they have a build specifically for nvidia ion graphics based machines. Saying that though, they also have builds for Fusion HTPCs, Intel, XTreamer, Apple TV, and a generic build with or without proprietary graphics drivers.
baggers··on Poll: Display points on comments?
[Summary]Comment points are a way of outsourcing BS detection to people with considerably more knowledge than me.

I don't consider myself knowledgeable enough in the fields covered within hackernews to weed out the genuinely sagely advice from the erudite crap. I learn a huge amount from coming here and I feel I have lost a tool which helped me judge what I needed to dig into and study and what is just todays kool aid/lie/misunderstanding. I hope they get brought back, even just as an option.
