baggachipz··on OpenAI expands ChatGPT ads with Sponsored Agents
> How else are they to monetize text outputs?

I thought AGI was supposed to replace most knowledge workers and they'd pocket the savings that their customers enjoyed by not having to pay a work force. That's what their valuation is based upon.

baggachipz··on OpenAI expands ChatGPT ads with Sponsored Agents
Just like cable tv, and Netflix, and Amazon Prime Video, and....
baggachipz··on Diesel prices in U.S. top $6 a gallon for first time
"both sides" is the reason we're in this shit show. It's like comparing a wart to stage 4 skin cancer.
baggachipz··on Claude is only available to people over 18 years
Today marks 25 years minus one day since the US really kicked the destruction of privacy into high gear. Soon after, framing this revocation of rights using the name PATRIOT.
baggachipz··on I think I hate the internet
> Reddit is on some absolute mission to make the experience miserable

Lemmy/Piefed are a pretty good approximation of the "old" reddit: community of people you remember, geek-centered for the most part, better discussion. It fills the void for me, and there's no algorithm to monetize or incentive for advertising. Well worth the few bucks a month I give my server admin.

baggachipz··on Lotus Notes and the dangers of starting from scratch
You're right, it was VBScript that it mimicked. I then parlayed that into Active Server Pages, which could use VBScript or JScript. We pivoted into JScript and that's when the web dev world truly opened up for me.

Emdashes.
baggachipz··on Show HN: The same nine streaming subscriptions cost $702/year more than in 2021
Subsidized prices at launch to lure in customers. Then profit-seeking, by raising prices and offering less for the money. Textbook enshittification.
baggachipz··on AirPods 5
No new Pros. They probably saw all the blowback about meta glasses and thought that maybe now's not the time for cameras on things.
baggachipz··on Flock Wants a Closely Surveilled World with No Exit
The fact that they allow unlimited access to any law enforcement organization, where they can surveil anyone across the entire country. Police have used it to stalk ex-partners, for example. The number of cameras are also an order of magnitude higher. I can't leave my driveway without being tracked.
baggachipz··on Lotus Notes and the dangers of starting from scratch
My first internship and job out of college was as a Notes developer. I spent most of my time trying to trick/strongarm Notes into doing what I wanted. Want to build a timekeeping system? Sure, I can do that. A website? No problem, Domino server made it easy(ish).

The paradigm of everything being a database with documents was ahead of its time, but the real power was in LotusScript. It was basically just Javascript and that allowed me to transition to a web dev role later on. I have mostly fond memories of Notes.

baggachipz··on Gmail to end support for "Send as" for third-party addresses, such as @yahoo.com
The moment they turn off automatic forwarding (and I have no doubt they will), my gmail address dies. I'm trying to migrate accounts over whenever possible, but it's quite tedious.
baggachipz··on Brain's timing is lying to you
The way you perceive time is an illusion your brain uses in order to make predictions about the world.
baggachipz··on Sweden pauses Denmark power cable over EU grid rules
Sweden bullying Denmark, a tale as old as time.
baggachipz··on How accurate have Ed Zitron's AI skeptic predictions been?
By all means, keep betting on this being a wild success and we'll see who's right in a little while. If you don't think this is a bubble then you're in for a ride.
baggachipz··on How accurate have Ed Zitron's AI skeptic predictions been?
Hate on him all you want (he's gotten very repetitive for the sake of subscribers and reads), but the basic premise that the modern AI industry is a circular-dealing, point-of-diminishing-returns grift still holds. The bubble is here and the longer it inflates, the worse the pop will be. Sure the goalposts have moved, but the basic numbers don't math.
baggachipz··on EFF to Governor Newsom: Veto California's AB 1709
Think of it like current kids being bombarded by cancer-causing radiation. The sooner you get them out of it the better. Yes, it is better still to never have been exposed, but the second best time to stop it is now.
baggachipz··on EFF to Governor Newsom: Veto California's AB 1709
I don't think that would solve the issue. The algorithms exist to keep users engaged and looking at ads; turning the ads from targeted to generic still wouldn't change the end goal of these companies. They want to keep people scrolling and feeling inadequate so that they see and click ads.
baggachipz··on EFF to Governor Newsom: Veto California's AB 1709
I agree that this is a very blunt instrument rife with terrible potential, but I don't know what could be done in its stead. The EFF makes excellent points, but in my view the social media algorithms do way more harm than good, especially for minors. What would be the more ideal solution here? Clearly we can't do nothing, and time is of the essence for the current generation.

baggachipz··on $900M paid out to end wind farm project going to firm run by Mar-a-Lago neighbor
I sound defeated because I feel defeated. I think it's too far gone at this point. I'm tired, boss.
baggachipz··on $900M paid out to end wind farm project going to firm run by Mar-a-Lago neighbor
Short of an actual peasant revolt, it wouldn't matter. All three branches are owned by him, as is the military and the police.
baggachipz··on $900M paid out to end wind farm project going to firm run by Mar-a-Lago neighbor
And yet so normalized at this point. It's going to be an article in the news for a day or two, then it's gone because a new one comes along.
baggachipz··on $900M paid out to end wind farm project going to firm run by Mar-a-Lago neighbor
His MO is always one (or both) of two things: grift, or revenge. He's still butthurt that he couldn't kill the offshore windmills near his Scottish golf club, and so now he wants to kill all wind farms. It just so happens that he can pay a buddy from taxpayer dollars to do this job, and it would of course have to include a kickback so that they both win. Pretty standard behavior for him.
baggachipz··on Stripe acquires Clerky

baggachipz··on Taylor Farms: How One Company's Reach Became a National Risk
> Taylor Farms and its CEO, Bruce Taylor, have donated millions to Republican and Trump Administration-associated political action committees (PACs) since 2025. This includes a $1 million contribution to both MAGA Inc. and a super PAC dedicated to electing House Republicans.

> ...on July 16, the same day the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced their investigation into the multistate Cyclospora outbreak, Taylor Farms executives met with White House and FDA officials

Ah, well, there it is. Good for them that they're able to get away with it. Corporate protection is bought and sold out in the open.
