bagful··on Joe Biden stands down as Democratic candidate
Indeed, one reason it took so long to get to this point was because Biden/his party was more interested in his legacy than his efficacy.
bagful··on Trench collapses have killed hundreds of workers in the US over the last decade
186 years with the current level of funding and procedures, I assume. And random, unannounced visits of even 1% of those sites should make a significant difference.
bagful··on Empathy for the user having sex with your software
Could our marginalization of healthy human sexuality relative to other normal, if risky, activities be contributing to said “filthiness”?
bagful··on The CrowdStrike file that broke everything was full of null characters?
Indeed, '\0' is the sentinel character for uncounted strings in C, and even if your own counted string implementation is “null-byte clean”, aspects of the underlying system may not be (Windows and Unix filesystems forbid embedded null characters, for example).
bagful··on The Stratocaster Turns 70
Too bad about the headstock, but a Telecaster doesn’t look right with any other shape either.
bagful··on KidPix
TuxPaint is just as fun for adult artists, especially using a stylus touchscreen. The Magic tools have unique digital-grunge effects that a more respectable paint program won’t have (my favorite is Chalk). I only recommend replacing the stock colors with something like Dawnbringer’s 16- or 32-color palette.
bagful··on Apple TV Go: How a USB-C Mod Spiraled into an iPad-Based TvOS Workstation
Between this and the iPad used as a display for a headless MacBook it’s an ongoing tragedy that the best use case for such world-class computing hardware is as a screen for another device (which is itself running the same OS, on comparable or weaker hardware!)
bagful··on .NET for NES Game Console on 6502 Microprocessors
The hardware stack pointer is restricted to indexing within [$0100, $01ff] but, lacking a stack-pointer-relative addressing mode, it is more preferable to realize a parameter stack using a zero-page pointer indexed with the (zp),Y addressing mode, as cc65 does.
bagful··on Can I use gasoline to cook spaghetti faster?
In what domain have LLMs been demonstrated to so-called “think” consistently better than a college- or even high-school-educated adult?
bagful··on Amazon CEO Andy Jassy violated labor law with union comments, NLRB rules
Well of course, they might be the boss someday!
bagful··on Roblox executive says children making money on the platform is 'a gift'
World history isn’t applicable to game development? No help at all from biology, physics, chemistry? Don’t even bother with psychology?
bagful··on The worst possible way to be rejected for a job
Even the most measured emotional appeal is considered unprofessional on the basis that it appeals to humanity; it is “unfair” to appeal to someone on a para-rational level. You can’t reason away how someone’s face dropping, their voice breaking up, makes you feel.
bagful··on The killer app of Gemini Pro 1.5 is using video as an input
Amplified Intelligence - I am keenly interested in the future of small-data machine learning as a potential multiplier for the creative mind
bagful··on It's Been 30 Years Since Food Ate Up This Much of Your Income
As a single person who eats out far too often, I've observed a general decline of commercial eateries over the past year in staffing, ingredient quality, and menu offerings. It's back to organic PB&J's for me.
bagful··on Aho – a Git implementation in Awk
I love AWK. Its stringly-typedness would make a Javascript programmer blush: 0, “”, and actually-nothing are identically falsey. Numbers are no different from strings representing numbers, like Lua. Somehow, I don’t mind — if you really need to keep your numbers numbers and strings strings, sigilate the value (prepend with #/$) and peel it off with a substr() later.
bagful··on Cannabis use linked to anxiety diagnoses, worsened anxiety disorders
What kind of cannabis are people trying to treat their anxiety with? If it's high-THC dispensary strains and oil cartridges, no wonder; such products have hardly any medicinal value.
bagful··on Show HN: Atopile – Design circuit boards with code
Agree, I wish them the best of luck — I’m not convinced a computer will ever beat me in the single-sided perf board niche, and I’m but an amateur, but I’d be happy if one did.
bagful··on Russian cosmonaut sets record for most time in space – more than 878 days
What about, "has experienced ..." or "passed through 20 ms fewer"?
bagful··on Limitarianism: The Case Against Extreme Wealth
If this good were “clearly” great for society, they wouldn’t have trouble forming a conglomerate towards achieving it. We can use the wealth that isn’t sponged up and locked away at the bottom of the sea for such initiatives.

Society has had enough of ostensibly singular “great persons” inflicting their idea of the greater good on the rest of us in exchange for love, respect, and money. The rest of us have to earn those three.

bagful··on Starlink's laser system is beaming 42 petabytes of data per day
A privately-held strategic advantage?
bagful··on Smoother sailing: Studying audio imperfections in Steamboat Willie
In what sense? Higher resolution formats provide more true-to-life fidelity, but that's only more true-to-nonsense when the additional information is produced from extrapolation.
bagful··on Brains are not required to think or solve problems – simple cells can do it
Imagine this to be the very reason the human mind is mostly self-illegible — that the birth of the inscrutable unconscious was a defense mechanism?
bagful··on The Enchippening
What is the smallest feasible cleanroom for such a purpose? Can we fit a turnkey chip fab in a shipping container, hermetically sealed upon manufacture, fully automated, even pre-stocked with wafers? Drop it on a concrete pad, fill up the chemical tanks, send a spec, you have a wafer bonded to a standard package in X hours
bagful··on The teen mental illness epidemic is international (2023)
I understand such therapy is rather formatted that when the patient asks “why do I strike my children?” the therapy looks not for root causes but immediate ones. “What do you feel leading up to these violent incidents? Once you understand that, it becomes your choice to head them off.”
bagful··on Understand how transformers work by demystifying the math behind them
Neither just text or just concepts, but text-concepts — LLMs can only manipulate concepts as they can be conveyed via text. But I think wordlessly, in pure concepts and sense-images, and serialize my thoughts to text. That I have thoughts that I am incapable of verbalizing is what makes me different from an LLM - and, I would argue, actually capable of conceptual synthesis. I have been told some people think “in words” though.
bagful··on Audio2Photoreal
I dare you to make it look better than the pictures that form in my mind’s eye
bagful··on An underground delivery train comes to the Atlanta suburbs
In the best case, sidewalk slabs tilt and settle unpredictably from frost heaves and water movement, and it only takes a small step between two slabs to trip an able person. If a sidewalk is maintained at all the lifted edges will be ground level, a yearly process. Just one example of routine maintenance that I notice.
bagful··on Twitch Reverses Policy on 'Artistic Nudity' After Just Two Days
I can only think of Gfycat, which spun off their adult content to a separate site, Redgifs; since then the individual sites have been acquired by different companies.
bagful··on Transparent wood could soon find uses in smartphone screens, insulated windows
As a non-parent, I might replace the window with acrylic simply to deny the child the satisfaction of destroying plate glass
bagful··on Music from Outer Space
Rest soundly Ray Wilson; I owe much of my passion for electrical engineering to having pored over your site as a kid.
