badpenny··on Michael K. Williams Is More Than Omar from ‘The Wire’
Maybe you're not supposed to find him sympathetic. Maybe you're not even supposed to find him unsympathetic. Maybe that's one of the things that differentiates good shows from great shows.
badpenny··on Why do many math books have so much detail and so little enlightenment? (2010)
I've often thought that one of the main problems with pedagogy, at least the kind that tends towards the abstract, is that it tries to give you answers without prompting the questions.

I suppose you could argue that it's the student's responsibility but maybe that would require insight and inspiration on a par with that of the person who came up with the answers in the first place and I think it's fair to say that that's an unrealistic and unreasonable expectation.

> Normal people don't connect with or understand facts.

I consider myself and, almost by definition, most of the people I know to be normal and I can assure you us plebians are perfectly capable of understanding facts.

It amazes me that people still believe that these companies care about anything except the bottom line.

And, conversely, to some people money is everything and they can never have enough of it.
badpenny··on Rooby: a Ruby-like object oriented language written in Go
There's a difference between improving something and reinventing it.
badpenny··on Rooby: a Ruby-like object oriented language written in Go
I'd argue there's a lot wrong with reinventing the wheel. People don't seem to care about the inevitable waste of programmer time and effort that comes with introducing a new programming language or library, assuming it gains any traction.

"That sounds very stylish".
badpenny··on What makes a genius?
You're the one who used the analogy. Are you being deliberately obtuse?

Height is a spectrum and yes, IQ is a spectrum. "Seven feet tall" is an easily identifiable point along the height spectrum. "Genius" is not an easily identifiable point along the IQ spectrum.

It's a wishy-washy, overly emotive term that lumps certain people into an elite group which, by the popular conception of the word, you're either born into or you're not. It says more about the people who use it than the people they're bestowing the title upon. But hey, if you like the term and get your kicks seeing it bandied about, good for you. I find it trite and counterproductive.

badpenny··on What makes a genius?
Because height is a spectrum and easily and accurately quantifiable, whereas "genius" is neither.
badpenny··on What makes a genius?
I really don't like the popular concept of "genius". It's divisive and trivialises the accomplishments and struggles of people who aren't "geniuses".

I'm from the UK and have just come back from staying a month in Louisiana, mainly New Orleans, and Georgia and have spent a few months in Georgia previously. American drivers, at least in the south, are scary. Like you say, things like using your phone and eating while driving, which are strongly frowned upon where I'm from and pretty rare to see are very common sights. Even drinking and driving doesn't seem to have the same stigma attached to it as it does here.

Drivers in general also seem to be more aggressive and will drive over the speed limit and cut each other off.

To anybody who hasn't seen it, Werner Herzog made a short film about texting and driving called From One Second to the Next which I recommend. It can be found on YouTube.

badpenny··on Ask HN: Novelty addiction is ruining my life and career. What should I do?
This is clearly unsubstantiated - the benefits of coffee are very clearly outlined.

No they aren't.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20182035

These are just two of the first studies I found. There are plenty of others.

if you do not over-do it, there is a 90% chance of feeling more alert when you drink coffee.

90% of statistics are made up on the spot. If you're going to acuse me of making shit up on the spot maybe you shouldn't do it yourself? Feeling is the operative word in your statement.

badpenny··on Ask HN: Novelty addiction is ruining my life and career. What should I do?
There are probably a number of causes, but coffee may be one of them. Don't be radical, but if you're having too much coffee, I'd suggest cutting down to just one coffee in the morning. It will take a bit of effort but may help you concentrate.

I'd suggest gradually cutting down to none. Apparently the alertness and general cognitive enhancing properties of caffeine don't really exist and all that people are noticing is the effect of the caffeine on their caffeine withdrawal symptoms.

I used to have a Nexus 4 and had the same problem. I now have a Samsung Galaxy S3 and still have the same kinds of issues, just not as frequently. From what I've heard from other people I think it's fair to say it's a general problem with Android-based smart phones.
badpenny··on How One 17-Year-Old Coded a #1 App and Got Hired by Facebook
Studying and coding aren't mutually exclusive. Most people who program for a living did so by studying and exams. It's not sexy but then real life mostly isn't.

There are plenty of people "chasing their dreams" but a lot (most?) of them will have to settle for less because of the way the world works.
