badestrand··on Tailwind: A Utility-First CSS Framework
Ok maybe I was too negative too quickly, sorry. After reading another article [1] linked in some other comment I can see the appeal, if used with some templating engine that allows reusing html (like Vue or React).

It is crazy how new technology brings up old patterns again. Similar to how it was frowned upon to have JS near your HTML ("must be separated!") and now with React they are intertwined to a maximum.

I oftentimes find css to be the most complex and hardest to change part of web applications and am thankful to any approach that explores alternatives!

badestrand··on Tailwind: A Utility-First CSS Framework
Yes, the problem is that this library just replaced typing

    <div style="background: white">
with

    <div class="bg-white">
without realizing that the first is considered a bad practice for a reason and that the second is equivalent.
badestrand··on Building your own deep learning computer is 10x cheaper than AWS
According to the article you can break even after only two weeks which is far from "10k cookies every day for multiple years".
badestrand··on Funding Choices – Google’s new tool for GDPR compliance and content monetization
> Maybe I'm naieve, but I feel building automated law breaking systems is not something corporations do

Did you already forget the VW diesel scandal? That was exactly that - a huge corporation systematically breaking the law with lots of people even in the highest ranks aware of and supporting it.

badestrand··on How Teachers Came to Be So Underpaid in America
In Germany they are paid quite well. At least older, married ones with children as those things give you bonuses. A relative of me had ~4k€ net (after taxes and healthcare) which puts you in the top 15% income earners according to a quick Google search. Not bad for teaching in some random school somewhere in the countryside. Unfortunately most German states are currently trying to lower the wages.
badestrand··on Ask HN: Is the new MacBook Pro worth its value for a developer?
My MacBook Air is also crashing weekly and I don't even do anything demanding (no VMs or video editing or the like).
badestrand··on Grover raises €37M Series A to offer latest tech products as a subscription
Some people might want to test iPhone and MacBook if they are thinking about switching over from Android and Windows. Or a few app developers might want to lease it for two months for testing. Grover does not need every single person to use their service.
badestrand··on China’s two-child policy is having unintended consequences
> suppressing the birth rate

And the birth rate will go up if men are forbidden to work for half a year when having a child? That seems highly doubtful, it might as well go further down because some people actually like their work.

badestrand··on Show HN: Moon – 3kb JavaScript UI compiler
It works very well with preact so it obviously is possible. edit: And while you pass it often as a prop (<a class=...>) you usually never access it yourself in components - and if you do, just do `this.props['class']`.
badestrand··on Show HN: Moon – 3kb JavaScript UI compiler
> I prefer React.js style, which lets you use languages you already know (HTML and JavaScript)

No, you also have to relearn, just not as much. The React docs rightly state "JSX is not HTML" because you cannot use comments, doctype and it's a shame that JSX deviates from HTML in attribute names. Having to use className instead of class annoys me to no end and is why I prefer preact (they use class). Also autoComplete and spellCheck - just why? Converting this-that to thisThat makes sense but renaming attributes without necessity was a stupid decision.

badestrand··on A world of free movement would be $78T richer
> No, immigrants do not have abysmal rates of employment

I think it depends on the specific form of migration to that country. For example the USA or Switzerland have very high skilled people coming to their country. In Germany too, but there was and is also a large influx of very uneducated migrants. Currently 55% of all welfare recipients in Germany are people with a migration background which shows that the opportunities/capabilities are not equal.

I do think though that welfare can still work with free movement, it is just that there would need to be a similar level in all/many countries.

badestrand··on Ask HN: How do you meet new people?
Of course, please share your experiences.
badestrand··on So Your Startup Received the Nightmare GDPR Letter
> might take up as much time as it would to learn a new language

How so? Just build yourself a tiny tool that takes an email address or username and sends them their database entries along with the standard explanations about why you need that data.

For my side projects that will be around two hours per project and then 2 minutes for every request.

Or am I missing something?

badestrand··on Rhetoric around the blockchain hints at problems with techno-utopian ideologies
Well, the blockchain hype is easy to criticize. Tech people refer to its inefficiencies and how it is just a decentralized database. Political people point out that the real world is much more complex than what a blockchain can represent.

I would argue that its strength lies in another area: It gets people excited. It makes people start thousands of new projects and companies, millions read all the news articles and a huge crowd invests a lot of money into the space.

And, of course, it gets people excited because it hits a nerve. It promises a change of power structure in the world. Away from monolithic, opaque, political structures to democratic, transparent, border-less systems. Changing the role of everyone from a helpless observer to an actice participant.

Obviously the build-up is messy and over-promising but it may very well change the core infrastructures of how the whole world currently operates - economically, politically and socially.

badestrand··on German online bank uses Bitcoins to transfer loans
> Giro transfers clear within minutes. This is the day-to-day mechanism that EU citizens use to pay their bills.

Not true at all. This is just starting to get implemented in the EU. Until now transfers took usually a full banking day, thus nothing happened on the weekend and holidays. Last year over easter I had a transfer between two German banks take 7 days because of that.

And international transfers are still a nightmare.

badestrand··on Jan Koum to leave after broad clashes with Facebook
Facebook alone makes $23 per user (from US/Canada) per month so it probably should rather be $50 than $10 per month.
badestrand··on WeWork to Sell $500M of Bonds in Debut Sale
Yes. I am digital nomading and the coworking in major cities in developing countries usually cost usd 100/mo, including free water, coffee and events. The WeWork places I checked were 2x-3x the costs and I can't imagine them to be that much better.

Having said that, 80% utilization is great and maybe catching all the premium market will work.

badestrand··on One of Estonia's first "e-residents" explains what it means
No, would you? People want to decide and vote, at least in areas that they are interested in. See most referendums world-wide or the participiant rates in Switzerland.
badestrand··on One of Estonia's first "e-residents" explains what it means
> What's the way you measure and get consensus on community leaders' merit?

I find the model of liquid democracy enticing: Every decision is voted on by the people of the community and because that would be overwhelming you can delegate your vote (in general, for a certain topic or just for a single vote) to someone you trust, like an expert in that area. Maybe people might get a little money for voting so experts who vote with many votes can do this professionally in full time.

So now you have people competing for the expert status for certain topics (like health care or foreign affairs) and everyone in the community can have direct influence on the outcome of every decision. Every bit of power is earned and most decisions are effectively made by trusted experts.

badestrand··on The End of Windows
My 1-year-old MacBook Air runs 1440x900 with 8 GB and it cost >$1.000 IIRC. So neither "very old" nor $200-$400 range.
badestrand··on Modern PHP without a framework
> how many interesting new ideas will you learn from studying PHP, versus [...] languages such as Javascript/Node

This is on point! Programming PHP is not about diving deep into interesting language constructs or creating beautifully structured software - PHP is about getting things done, about starting hurdle-free and progressing rapidly. It goes against some "good development practices" but it works, see for example the single-file website remoteok.io from Pieter Levels: https://twitter.com/levelsio/status/938707166508154880

badestrand··on Apple SIM
Just FYI: There are phones which accept two SIM cards so you can keep your number and insert a local card in the second slot.
badestrand··on Tempe Police Release Video of Uber Accident
There is not only continuing and stopping, there is also slowing down, as many human drivers do as well in unclear situations.
badestrand··on Tempe Police Release Video of Uber Accident
> the pedestrian is invisible until the last moment

In this crappy video, yes. Maybe it was scaled down massively before handing to the police or made darker, we don't know. It might have been visible for a normal person.

badestrand··on N26 raises $160M from Tencent and Allianz
I love how fast the notifications are with N26. When I am standing at the ATM I can feel my phone vibrating while the ATM still counts the money to give it out to me. Same when I pay with the credit card at a hotel for example, I know the transaction worked before I the credit card-machine spits out the receipt.

I know this doesn't sound like much of an advantage but it fills me with trust in the system and just feels very modern.

badestrand··on Ride-hailing’s NYC dominance, and the impact of DeleteUber
> Transportation is going to become a monthly flat rate > Owning your own car will be a luxury item.

Sorry, but I hate it when people talk about the future like a certainty. It has yet to unfold and many predictions turn out to be wrong. I definitely would not bet against car ownership, especially in the country side.

And maybe there will be an open renting framework where everyone can buy a few cars and put them into the system for anybody to rent for a drive. If Uber does not make the self driving software, what would be their role and strength in 20 years?

badestrand··on Redesigning Redux
> my code is replete with multiple responders

Thanks for your input! Do you mind giving 2-3 examples of good uses of multiple reducers for the same action?

badestrand··on Redesigning Redux
> I missed the part where you explained why changing the reducer to an object with methods would bring any benefits

Because this is how the rest of your programming works, you call functions. In Node you don't have `fs.processMessage('readFile', {path, next})` because `fs.readFile(path, next)` is simpler. Message passing is nice if you pass process boundaries or can't know about the function definition but in Redux you pull in the string constants and everything anyway. Message passing also lets you hook several handlers (reducers) to the same message but I have yet to see it significantly used, this is a niche case.
