badestrand··on Former Google CEO blames remote work for company's struggles
Well, there are real drawbacks to remote work. It hinders creativity and practically limits exchange between workers. Whether it's still worth it for the company or whether they can mitigate the downsites is another question but there definitely are downsites.
badestrand··on The most, and least, walkable cities
I disagree about Kuala Lumpur. Maybe it depends on the area, but IME the walkability is great. Public transport is superb, lots of zebra crossings and foot paths, drivers are considerate. I see lots of people walking everywhere. Even at night, as the city feels really safe.
badestrand··on PostgreSQL and UUID as Primary Key
Best solution is to have a serial identifier internally and a generated ID for external. And yes it shouldn't be a UUID as they are user-hostile, it should be something like 6-10 letters+digits.
badestrand··on PostgreSQL and UUID as Primary Key
You never expose the bigserial, you generate a ID (like UUID) for external use/identification and simply have an index over that column for fast selects.
badestrand··on Why YC went to DC
At least for Europe this is wrong. I mean yes, there are new trade treaties but internally EU regulations and at least for Germany its regulations increase by the day. Just this year the personal tax declaration form got 10 or so additional pages. And the new supply chain law needs medium to large companies to prove that all their purchases are morally correct (sorry not sure how to phrase this properly). And I don't even follow new laws closely.
badestrand··on Sam and Greg's response to OpenAI Safety researcher claims
That rather sounds like Palantir is dangerous and not OpenAI.
badestrand··on Cash payments above €3000 to be outlawed in Netherlands
Good guess!

"Money Laundering Action Plan Act

Amendment of the Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Prevention Act in connection with the ban on cash payments for goods from 3,000 euros and the expansion of the options for information exchange for the gatekeeper function."

badestrand··on Server-side rendering is a better choice for many applications (2020)
This is already here and in use. See Next.js using React.js for example. Server-side rendering out of the box and small next needed pieces are loaded continuously when they are needed.
badestrand··on I don't need your query language
The wrong order in the statements is a minor inconvenience but the widespread use and having an industry standard is 100x as valuable.
badestrand··on How the brain processes German and Arabic
Interestingely there is this split of the action again so you need to stash away the "let's" in your brain until you know what to "let's" which comes only at the end of the sentence.

In the english version the verb "think through" comes directly after the "let's", so there's no need to cache anything; it seems that is clearer and more direct.

badestrand··on Netflix loses 1M users in Spain over password policing
Wow, I never heard about that and I suspect it's not well-known at all inside the EU.
badestrand··on Heroku has been running a second copy of my scheduler instance
Not being able to update your code plus your app will completely crash randomly at some point between now and eternity - sounds great!
badestrand··on Companies to publish salary ranges in job adverts under new EU rules
So if a company wants to attract top talent they can just publicy offer +10% and they get the best people. Seems to me it could become a race to the top, heavily benefiting employees.
badestrand··on The CEO of IBM says A.I. is going to replace ‘clerical white-collar work’
Also we have constant progress of automation and technology since thousands of years already, so there would need to be a reason why this step out of all steps suddenly elevates us to Eden.
badestrand··on WebKit Supports Nested CSS
I agree it's a big mistake to not make the nesting rules compatible to Sass/Less.

> Because of limitations in browser parsing engines, you must make sure the nested selector (.bar in the above example) always starts with a symbol.

How hard can it be.. I know that is always easy to say from the outside but in this case I don't understand why the refuse to implement it. Just labelling it as a performance problem doesn't say much because why should it impact performance to check whether there appears another rule with an opening "{" after it.

badestrand··on Bard and new AI features in Search
Yes, sorry that's an anecdote of me and everyone I know that has tried ChatgGPT. Obviously in the grand scheme of things this is nothing, but if other early adopters behave similarly it is a great threat to Google because if it catches early adopters then everyone else will follow after a while.
badestrand··on Bard and new AI features in Search
> what am I missing? Why would a chatbot like ChatGPT disrupt Google vs forcing Google to simply evolve.

Because it's not clear yet whether anyone else can currently develop a chatbot interface as capable as ChatGPT.

For many ChatGPT is already replacing a lot of Google searches so G needs to hurry.

badestrand··on Choosing a Postgres primary key
I think you can just make that dependent on the table's data. For a table of user posts use bigserial but for a list of companies, prices or names the serial will surely be sufficient.
badestrand··on Ask HN: Strategies for working with engineers that are too smart?
I want to support the proposed solutions in this comment.

A long time ago I was like the engineer that is described by OP. Basically what drove me was the search for engineering /coding challenges.

badestrand··on Coinbase cuts staff by a further 20%
Just curious, which kind of exchanges do you mean that are 100 years young? The first stock exchange came to be >400 years ago and I guess there are currency or other exchanges that were there before.

(Sorry if I just seem to want to point out a mistake - your first sentence just sounds so specific that it just got me interested in what you mean.)

badestrand··on Tesla’s 2022 Collapse Hits 69% After Deepest Selloff Since April
I think a large part of the valuation was also the promise of full self driving. Musk repeatedly stated that it would coming "very soon" and Tesla would have been the first worldwide with that.

Now we know that Tesla will probably not be the first with level 5 autonomy and that their no-lidar approach may not even be sufficient at all.

But the belief in their FSD was priced into Tesla's valuation as well and by now it's clear that this part was overvalued.

badestrand··on The Uber leak exposes the global war on workers
In Germany at least it's less about safety and more about keeping competition at bay. Operating a taxi requires you to buy a "token" on the black market for around USD 50.000 and by law only token owners are allowed to pick up and drive around people. Rates are set by the municipality as well.

The market needs to break up and become more free.

Similarly, until a few years ago it was forbidden to operate busses between cities.

Uber has some negative aspects but opening up the market and allowing healthy competition is certainly a huge positive.

badestrand··on Why companies move off Heroku (besides the cost)
As always it depends on the context. I worked in a company where we streamed video to millions of end users and it was 10x cheaper to operate our own datacenter instead of renting cloud things for that. We also used hosted cloud offerings where it made sense, for other applications.
badestrand··on Apple's whitelist of the 250k auto-completable domains in iOS
My website is in there but with a typo (people often make that mistake) :( The website with typo doesn't exist.
badestrand··on Supabase Edge Functions
I love the concept of Supabase, I only worry about performance in this case. Almost all API calls in my applications execute some SQL to gather data from the database. Having the edge function execute several select queries on the database on the other side of the world is a few times slower than having the API server near the database. Basically, the distance between API and database is much more important than the distance between user and API. I guess the only solution is to have read-copies of the database on the edge as well..?
badestrand··on TikTok is scary good. It's digital crack
It's just entertainment. You could say the same about books or TV. At least Facebook, Instagram and TikTok are social and interactive and encourage people to produce content instead of just consuming passively.
badestrand··on Using hamburger menus? Try sausage links (2019)
At the same time they don't utilize the 4 most easy to reach points of the screen, the corners. Windows always used those for essential interactions so the interface was really fast to use: for the start menu just throw your mouse to the bottom left corner; to close the window throw your mouse to the top right corner; to show your desktop throw to to bottom right; not sure anymore about the other corner as I am on Mac for a while already. Since switching to Mac I am always thinking about how stupid the interface is for disregarding important user-friendly details like these.

badestrand··on Nearly a third of TV ads play to empty rooms
You don't need AI for that. 20 years ago my neighbors had a small device that would automatically mute the TV whenever the ads started playing and unmuted when they finished. No idea how it worked but for sure it didn't have a fancy neural network inside.
