badcppdev··on Metals Fuse Together in Space
I know it's not trivial but do organisation working with vacuum chambers ever set it up so that the atmosphere inside a pressure vessel is kept full of dehydrated oxygen/nitrogen air at positive pressure during maintenance activities?

I know they make sure that all the workers suit up to prevent oil from skin ruining any chance at a high vacuum.

badcppdev··on Dear Spotify, stop treating your users like testers
I almost posted on HN the other day about the annoying podcast UX in Spotify. The Home > Podcast section on the Android app shows the most recent 8 podcasts you've listened to. If you follow more than 8 podcasts then you need to use the 'Your library' section to check if the other podcasts have new episodes.

Spotify will randomly choose new podcasts rather that play you new episodes of podcasts you are already following.

Edit: And the fact that I can't get a history of what I've played drives me up the wall. Podcasts and songs.

badcppdev··on September was the most anomalously hot month ever
Looks like you were getting some down votes for talking about the almost worst case scenario. No rebuttals unfortunately
badcppdev··on September was the most anomalously hot month ever
I think you're right but I don't think the majority of the population in first world countries will be getting richer... so are the people who did get richer going to pay?

I also worry that hardening the infrastructure in first world countries is going to be very expensive. Especially if the developing countries are so badly affected that they can't provide the normal supplies of food, minerals, ores, etc.

I would like to be an optimist and disagree with you but my optimism is being used with hoping that I don't end up stuck on the wrong side of the planet to my family when airlines have to start charging for the impact of the carbon released.

I think the Overton window needs to shift soon to include the idea that widespread government intervention will be required to avoid 800 million climate refugees

badcppdev··on Americans Saved $1.1T Less Than Previously Thought from 2017-2022
I think you get my point exactly but you disagree with it. That's fine. But companies are sitting on cash reserves of trillions of dollars. Do you think that a profitable company sitting on its profits is a brake on economic growth?

Right now companies are saving up profits in their bank balances. I think if you increase the tax they pay then those balances will grow more slowly and the tax money will flow into the economy via the public sector. You think the companies will spend less but I'm not sure why companies would scale back operations?

badcppdev··on Most Americans comfortable with solar panels, turbines in their communities
Rural landscape is kind of an oxymoron. It's not a natural landscape but we've been raised to think that it looks lovely.

Hopefully people can cope with enough wind turbines that we reduce emissions before the climate storms destroy too much of our modern infrastructure.

badcppdev··on The short-lived experiment with rubber tires on railways (2013)
Train crash worthiness is quite an interesting topic. Important to remember is that trains carry hundreds of people. So a crash involving a single train carriage can easily become a catastrophe.

badcppdev··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2023)
I'm really curious and hoping you could just clarify what you mean by "address". Is there a thing that needs to be changed? Or a message that needs to be clarified?
badcppdev··on Americans Saved $1.1T Less Than Previously Thought from 2017-2022
To paraphrase (and fix a typo)

If the economy is a car then people saving extra is the equivalent of hitting the brake pedal and people spending more is the equivalent of hitting the accelerator (or gas) pedal.

So the huge cash reserves of large companies are a brake on the economy which is why all the politicians are so keen to increase corporation tax /s

badcppdev··on Nobel Prize in Medicine awarded to Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman
Well at the moment the UK could really benefit from tax revenue from a certain prosperous former colony so that sounds good to me. Not sure about the benefit for the colony.
badcppdev··on What every software developer must know about Unicode in 2023
To save other people the google: Tengwar is probably not in unicode because it is a fictional script from a book.
badcppdev··on What every software developer must know about Unicode in 2023
Just a nitpick because the page says: "Unicode is a standard that aims to unify all human languages, both past and present, and make them work with computers." but of course unicode is only relevant to written languages as opposed to spoken languages (and signed languages)

I wish that was the only thing wrong with that page

badcppdev··on Amsterdam preparing to lower speed limit to 30 kilometers per hour
I think it's really funny how humans can't help but use round numbers.

30 kph = 18.64 mph

20 mph = 32.19 kph

So safety rules around the world are based on arbitrary length systems. I'm all for lower speed limits for safety but I feel there is still things to be worked out in suburban settings where long arterial(?) roads carry large amounts of traffic in large cities.

badcppdev··on Common infections can spark psychiatric illnesses in children
And your feelings are absolutely understandable, valid and a sign of how the medical system needs to improve. You should have mentioned them in your original comment.
badcppdev··on Common infections can spark psychiatric illnesses in children
Sorry that is terrible phrasing. You don't understand why doctors act in a dismissive manner that seems mean.

Rephrase it and it becomes the start of a solution. What should happen in a patient doctor interaction where the doctor is not able to reassure a patient that the prescribed treatment plan is the best plan.

badcppdev··on Common infections can spark psychiatric illnesses in children
What are you talking about? What country doesn't use individual doctors for primary care?
badcppdev··on Common infections can spark psychiatric illnesses in children
I have no experience with the US system. I made no mention of public/private, universal health care or not and so on.

Your last sentence (minus the specific country) is exactly what I was talking about. There is no shortage of stories where doctors don't get it right for a million reasons. There is room for improvement.

badcppdev··on Show HN: XRain – Explore rainfall statistics around the world
Why does the coast of California get so little rain?
badcppdev··on Ford's Theatre Front-Row Tickets from April 14, 1865
Looking at the seating plan for the NY Metropolitan Opera I can see boxes marked on the first balcony above the floor seats (stalls) reaching all the way around. Photos don't seem to show them as actual boxes or rooms but the website talks about 'luxury box experience'. Just looks like seats with more space to me.
badcppdev··on Ford's Theatre Front-Row Tickets from April 14, 1865
You've made me quite curious now. I thought boxes at the side was the normal pattern. Boxes in the middle above the stalls is not a pattern I've seen. I wonder if it differs by country and age of the theatre.
badcppdev··on Common infections can spark psychiatric illnesses in children
This is sad: "years spent campaigning to get doctors to take the illnesses seriously."

It's like that saying, "Capitalism: The worst economic system, except for all the others". Our medical system where we rely on individual doctors for primary care is really flawed but it's better than any alternatives that we have (or that we can afford anyway)

badcppdev··on How (not) to apply for a software job
It would be nice if they mentioned anything at all rather than "Competitive"

How about, "Top Quartile for software engineers in the UK market according to itjobswatch.co.uk"

Or, "Above average according to Glassdoor for San Portland, Georgia"

badcppdev··on Amazon PillPack – Your medication, sorted and delivered
It sounds like the doctor trusted you but I don't think you sound happy about it.

There are costs involved in appointments and filling prescriptions and you being trusted with an excess gives the system some flexibility that might avoid an extra appointment or visit to pharmacy.

Did it turn out ok?

Just feed the bullet to the artist. Then it's art and 'safe'.

Does anyone know if ingesting and excreting a (small) bullet is particularly unhealthy?

badcppdev··on Rhythm 0
I was coming to write a similar comment. It's a pity that the article doesn't talk more about the audience.

To answer your question the name is suitably cryptic and can be interpreted as referring to the artist not moving. It kind of pales compared to the my thoughts about the actual 6 hour performance which truthfully leaves me feeling a bit nauseous and disturbed

badcppdev··on We are beginning to roll out new voice and image capabilities in ChatGPT
I think AI systems being able to the real world and control motors is going to be a game changer bigger than ChatGPT. A robot that can slowly sort out the pile of laundry and get it into the right place (even if unfolded) is worth quite a bit to me.

I'm not sure what to think about the fact that I would benefit from a couple of cameras in my fridge connected to an app that would remind me to buy X or Y and tell me that I defrosted something in the fridge three days ago and it's probably best to chuck it in the bin already.

badcppdev··on The elderly are becoming homeless at a rate not seen since the Great Depression
Replying to myself. The article is also kind of incorrect when it says boomers are 57 to 75 as the youngest boomers are going to be 59 I think (1946-64)
badcppdev··on The elderly are becoming homeless at a rate not seen since the Great Depression
That's a fairly important fact rather than just a nit.
