badcppdev··on Ask HN: Why do message queue-based architectures seem less popular now?
I agree with you and I'm always confused when people talk about process isolation as a primary requirement for a collection of small internal services with negligible load.

In addition the overhead and reporting drawbacks of running multiple isolated databases is vastly higher than any advantaged gained from small isolated deployments.

badcppdev··on Raspberry Pi is now a public company
Haha. If you can code then you can create your own devices from scratch. People won't whine about a locked down cloud-only doorbell... they'll make their own.

Or you could do that now.

badcppdev··on Understanding the neuroscience behind burnout (2022)
That info about flouroquinolone is interesting. I've discovered that I was treated years ago using antibiotics that would definitely not be prescribed today. I will keep an eye on the drugs like Pirenzepine.
badcppdev··on Understanding the neuroscience behind burnout (2022)
I'm glad you're coping with a very difficult situation. Jumping on a bit of a tangent I'm fascinated how you swap between 'I' and 'You' in your comment and how it could read differently:

"Be gentle with yourself. Know that you can be scared, frustrated, or angry but don't have to let those emotions define you".

could become:

"I'm gently with myself. I know that I can be scared, frustrated, or angry but I don't let those emotions define me".

The difference is interesting to me.

Edit: You just inspired me to rewrite Desiderata in the first person. I'm not conceited enough to believe that my version is doing more than faintly echo the original text but it was a (self) enlightening process. Thanks

I move placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember the peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.

I speak my truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.

and so on.

badcppdev··on Brain overgrowth dictates autism severity, new research suggests
Why would you provide a link that doesn't mention autism and not provide a link to 'that Sweden study' ?
badcppdev··on A Quartz Thermal Trap Harnessed the Sun–and Is About to Change Smelting Forever
Privileged delusional fools propose sustainable lifestyles totally ignoring that there are 8,113,289,337 humans and a large percentage of them do not have basic needs met at the moment.

Humanity requires better technology to provide modern healthcare and food to everybody.

badcppdev··on Ransomware Attack on London Hospitals
Major NHS hospitals in London have been hit by a cyber-attack, which is seriously disrupting their services, including blood tests and transfusions.

The ransomware attack is having a “major impact” on the care provided by Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS trust, its chief executive has told staff in a letter.

The attack is understood to affect other hospitals, including King’s College hospital, and has left them unable to connect to the servers of the private firm that provides their pathology services.

badcppdev··on A Quartz Thermal Trap Harnessed the Sun–and Is About to Change Smelting Forever
Are you willing to feed your family at the low level currently available to the poorer humans on this planet? And convince your parents to not access healthcare that might use quite a large amount of resources to deliver?
badcppdev··on A Quartz Thermal Trap Harnessed the Sun–and Is About to Change Smelting Forever
Peer review paper: https://www.cell.com/device/fulltext/S2666-9986(24)00235-7

Executive Summary: Solar heater that can work at temperatures close to 1000C by using semi-opaque materials to absorb solar energy and minimise radiative losses. Not even a proof of concept of an improved smelter.

Article text in PopMech is exaggeration of paper and headline is a further exaggeration on top of that.

badcppdev··on Sharing details on a recent incident impacting one of our customers
Did you get the same emails that other people did? An email almost every day with the words "disruption", "apologies", "frustration" used multiple times.

A few days in an email titled: "A letter from the CEO"

> I am writing to provide you with an update on the disruption to our services.

> Firstly, let me begin by personally apologising for the outage, and thank you for your patience with our teams as they work around the clock to progressively get our systems back online.

I'm really not sure that you could ask for clearer communication at the time or a clearer description of what went from inside Google Cloud

badcppdev··on How Waymo outlasted the competition and made robo-taxis a real business
Thanks. As a human driver sometimes I feel like slowing down and being in the wrong place because the intersection is confusing is actually the safest action. I'm happy if an AI fails in the same way.
badcppdev··on How Waymo outlasted the competition and made robo-taxis a real business
Can you just clarify in the situation where, 'the Waymo straddled a left turn "lane" and a straight-travel lane', whether the behaviour of the Waymo was 'safe' although obviously incorrect for multiple reasons?
badcppdev··on Surprising supernova scars cover the Earth
Obligatory xkcd reference: https://what-if.xkcd.com/73/

> * A supernova, seen from as far away as the Sun is from the Earth, or

badcppdev··on The Way We Are Building Event-Driven Applications Is Misguided
Are you talking about the ad that asks you to consider paying for the content but has a little X to dismiss the dialog? Does Medium disable that X in different regions or is there another blocker I'm not seeing?
badcppdev··on Bento3D
Halfway through the Gridfinity intro video and I've come back to thank you.

(I'm also already exhausted from the level of manic energy from Zach but I'll try drinking two cups of coffee and hope that gets me to the end)

badcppdev··on What went wrong with UniSuper and Google Cloud?
There is nothing that someone outside these orgs can do. Adding speculation to the internet seems pointless in my opinion.

(I guess an investigative journalist could start interviewing staff promising anonymity)

badcppdev··on What went wrong with UniSuper and Google Cloud?
I agree. The author is forensically dissecting company press releases. Not useful imo
badcppdev··on A fragment of human cerebral cortex reconstructed at nanoscale resolution
Some excellent sibling replies but I think you've nailed it in terms of something that's easy to visualise
badcppdev··on Apple apologizes for iPad 'Crush' ad that 'missed the mark'
I liked this comment from that thread: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40310941

Linking to a reversed version of the Ad. Definitely making it better

badcppdev··on U.S. Rules Apple Illegally Interrogated Staff and Confiscated Union Flyers
> they would come in at 7 (who does that)

To answer your question human beings who want work life balance and want to do things with friends and family in the afternoon. Or do you believe that a work day should ONLY be for work?

badcppdev··on U.S. Rules Apple Illegally Interrogated Staff and Confiscated Union Flyers
And what solution do you propose?
badcppdev··on Google Cloud issue takes UniSuper 600k customers offline
I really hope we find out some details here.
badcppdev··on Electromigration Concerns Grow in Advanced Packages
If the erosion is a statistical process then I assume that having the current flow both ways just slows down the erosion by some factor. I assume you could estimated it using some variant of the random walk statistical model.
badcppdev··on Show HN: I made a privacy friendly and simple app to track my menstruation
> and they will only train married women.

Who is 'they'? I'm going to have to dive into google aren't I?

Edit: Ok. Returned from rabbit hole. They = religious types who have thoughts about conception and contraception.

badcppdev··on Common DB schema change mistakes in Postgres
I don't think Stack Overflow is a good place for good documentation. I think the Postgres documentation should be better.
badcppdev··on Show HN: Beautiful 3D ISS tracker with live video and near-realtime clouds
I love it!

My feature request is an option for a circle on the ground showing where the ISS is visible from at the moment.

badcppdev··on Common DB schema change mistakes in Postgres
Oh it's really worrying that you post a link to a SO page as the recommended 'cookbook' for something that's referred to as a powerful feature. And both of the answers only have a single up vote each. Seems like there's a serious gap here.
badcppdev··on TSMC's debacle in the desert: Missed deadlines and tension among coworkers
I accept your point but with the caveat that if there were issues would you expect to hear them aired publicly by a Japanese Taiwanese partnership?
badcppdev··on TSMC's debacle in the desert: Missed deadlines and tension among coworkers
I think it's hard to overstate the issues that stem from a workforce who cannot all speak the same language. In my experience it's an absolute showstopper for creating an effective organisation.

Add language barriers to solving very hard technical problems and you're going to have slow progress.

To be clear I am talking about just about language and not the cultural differences other comments are talking about.
