backing··on The Big Little Guide to Message Queues
API vs MQ : if there is an API you don't need MQ, or will you make a front MQ for every API you're calling ?

This article is inconsiderate of the added complexity of MQs.

How is the payment processor given as example decoupled from the main process from let's say an e-commerce website using a MQ ?

If the payment processor isn't responding, the payment process on the main site is broken and a client can't purchase.

If many clients try again to pay, the MQ will be flooded and attain its max limit. How do you deal with added complexity and extra error handling of the MQ ?

Same question for integrating a new payment processor: with a different API or SDK to integrate, how would that not be the case with a MQ as stated in the article?

A MQ is simply a buffer when you need to scale up service consumption. But services with APIs don't need it, they do rate limiting and if they're down you should better set the status on your program and stop communicating until it's up again.

MQs are not automatic and this article is selling false promises and examples.

We don't need more realistic looking games, buy actual design art.
backing··on Subuser: Docker as Desktop Programs
Yes it's still working fine, no docker change did break it yet.

The main repo is an image base for examples and base for developers to create their own images.

It has been updated in june 20, the main base file is debian buster.

All other image files are based on this one and a simple update does actually upgrade your tools from the older base image to the newer one -

It's like symlinked Dockerfiles.

backing··on Subuser: Docker as Desktop Programs
It depends on the hardware and usage.

For older computers, virtual machines are too demanding.

As for escalation hacks: they happen also on virtual machines. Check virtualbox and vmware cve's.

I've heard here on HN that the problem with Snap is that it doesn't enforce restrictions, and that most used programs on snap ask for all permissions, including access to all of your files.

I think you can check it in the snap metadata.

backing··on Subuser: Docker as Desktop Programs
You're welcome. I found this on stackoverflow and gosh it's from 2015!

I was about to just use a plain docker for firefox and slack with mounted X11 file. This project tought me about a more secure method for X11 forward.

backing··on Subuser: Docker as Desktop Programs
Exactly, the same usage for cpu and astonishingly also for memory. It's no virtual machine but a contained program that doesn't access your host system. Even X11 forward is secure with Xpra X11 bridge.

"Everyone uses this now" and "make the program work on every device" consequence.

They forgot that web is already providing compatibility and matureness for longer.

backing··on Our Year in Review: How We’ve Made Firefox Faster in 2020
I didn't experience faster Firefox on: high end desktop, laptop, mobile. UI changed, promotion of features like Pocket that I don't use. But not performance. Chromium is still faster in everything sadly.

When you mean without electron, would you still consider using your own web browser as being native?

Syncthing has this. If you open the GUI, it opens up in your browser.

What do you think about it ?

Thanks for Quart, I'll use it soon.

backing··on Ask HN: What's are your personal automations?
I use a mobile app that I created to launch programs and games on my computer from any room.

Very useful to launch just the programs I need in the morning from the bathroom and closing them when I'm finished.

In that way I can easily keep work and private workflow separated. I plan to release it next year, check out RemoteMeow on twitter or reddit.

backing··on Ask HN: Losing all interest in programming, what now?
Like others have said in this thread, this is your story and you're on your way finding what you really want to do.

Quitting everything that is not for you is the path you'll follow until you find your sparkling light, the magic in a project or a game or else you'd really like to pursue.

Pausing unnecessary work is good, and if you need to work for money, fully disconnect from it at the end of the day.

And start to find what makes you happy. Ask yourself a simple question. Move on.
