backendanon

Coded for several decades, still code full time (FT and/or contract, varies). Java. Backend or sometimes front if it's HTML/CSS/JS, JSP, JSF, something along those lines. I avoid modern web UI programming.

backendanon··on Teams now prompts for work location
I feel either you didn't grasp the context of my post or I didn't go far enough in detailing why I felt it's an inappropriate feature for them to push.
backendanon··on Blue-light glasses may not reduce eyestrain from screens, study says
Same here, just started using them a few months ago. Just a patient here but they do seem to make an improvement to me.
backendanon··on Don’t build a general purpose API to power your own front end (2021)
> This is similar but not quite the same as Server Driven UI1. Perhaps we could call it Server Informed UI.

I think we should just move back to server side rendering, JSP and even ASP were great, plain HTML, some JavaScript where desired since we can't seem to get away from JS.

backendanon··on Why Tailwind CSS Won
I like Twitter Bootstrap for my own sites but I do almost nothing with the frontend at work.
backendanon··on How to Disable IPv6 on Android
NOTE: I don't use CactusVPN nor do I know anyone who works there. I liked the simple clean look of the page and the clear instructions on how to disable IPv6.

Sadly, I tried disabling IPv6 about 2 or 3 years ago and while mostly things worked fine, there were glitches, I can't remember the specific failures but I've been thinking about trying it again.

backendanon··on The world in which IPv6 was a good design (2017)
> People cared about the IPv6 privacy risks but never let go of that concept even after rfc4941 fixed that oversight.

In my own experience in our household, IPv6 destroys privacy.

backendanon··on The world in which IPv6 was a good design (2017)
I can guarantee you no one shares my server's IPv4.

Also wish someone would do something about single player computer games that you find out won't work when the Internet is down (I assume because of telemetry but I don't know for sure), until it's too late to request a refund.
backendanon··on Flying Toasters Screensaver After Dark in CSS
This one has that and the chrome task manager shows this one uses around 1/3 of the CPU and GPU power to run it compared to the CSS only one:

Performance isn't king. The business is king.
backendanon··on Police stage ‘chilling’ raid on Marion County newspaper
> appears to violate federal law

It can appear as a can of tomatoes being consumed by Andy Warhol himself. It doesn't change the fact there are no shield laws in Kansas or the US for journalists.

backendanon··on Police stage ‘chilling’ raid on Marion County newspaper
"The Kansas Constitution does not have an express shield provision, nor has it been construed in a manner providing such protection."
backendanon··on Police stage ‘chilling’ raid on Marion County newspaper
Am I missing something? There's no [federal] shield law protecting journalists in the US.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shield_laws_in_the_United_Stat...

"There is no federal shield law and state shield laws vary in scope."

https://www.mtsu.edu/first-amendment/article/1241/shield-law...

"There is no federal shield law"

Not even former or sitting presidents are protected.

backendanon··on Firefox desktop extensions coming soon for the upcoming Android release
I didn't get through the article, had a hard time trying to read the text with the contrast.

To check if it was just me I used this site: https://www.accessibilitychecker.org/audit/?website=https%3A...

On the up side, at least it isn't stark white on a stark black background.

backendanon··on Git-appraise – Distributed Code Review for Git
This sounds like something that already existed out there I've read about in the past. Either way, this lets me out: "Assuming you have the Go tools installed"

Not interested in Go or anything else that gives Google control over the world, or any of the FAANG.

backendanon··on Get your staff's consent before you monitor them, tech inquiry warns
> you'll see people start to behave as if they can't be guaranteed a job somewhere.

I'm trying to follow the thread, are you saying that people who don't want to have every mouse click tracked or their private home network, outside the work VPN searched, are behaving in an entitled manor?

backendanon··on Monitoring your logs is mostly a tarpit
Sounds like systemd stuff. Why deal with systemd. Use Apache customized logging as the parent comment suggested.
backendanon··on Kafka is dead, long live Kafka
I didn't check the site. I have nightmares debugging kafka from years ago and it's only huger now. No thank you, give me Apache MQ or RabbitMQ, even IBM's MQ and it's all good and don't try to tell me I need a streaming thingamajig.
backendanon··on AWS to begin charging for public IPv4 addresses
Actually, I'm looking into Oracle Cloud.
backendanon··on AWS to begin charging for public IPv4 addresses
"Putting a price on IP address usage again is a mechanism to prevent squatting/hoarding a scarce resource."

That isn't one company's call, it's past time for the DOJ to step in.

backendanon··on AWS to begin charging for public IPv4 addresses
If I get too upset about it, I can find a cloud provider who isn't trying to find ways to nickel and dime me.
backendanon··on Ask HN: Anyone from CISA on Here?
I did a ctrl+f on the page of the link I posted, I do not see what you're suggesting? Is there a different link you're referring to? If it's subscribing, I'm already on their email list, that's how I got the link I posted.

I see on this page: https://www.cisa.gov/about/contact-us

Is that what you were referring to? I'm not an industry partner, the text indicates it's for them. I'm a US citizen trying to get word to CISA that their web page notification (in email or the web page) is difficult to read.

backendanon··on The Reluctant Sysadmin's Guide to Securing a Linux Server
I use Wireguard and do not rely on a third party.
backendanon··on The Reluctant Sysadmin's Guide to Securing a Linux Server
You're right, I forgot EC2 got that. When Lightsail gets it, I'll consider AWS as having it.
backendanon··on The Reluctant Sysadmin's Guide to Securing a Linux Server
Your comment sounds convincing at the start but..

"The best thing you can do is enable automated updates, and rely on your cloud provider's console for accessing the server and disabling all remote access otherwise."

1) I've run into to many issues letting the systems auto update. 2) Several times the AWS console (a web app so probably not as secure as a remote Linux ssh connection in my mind) failed to work, not just for me either, there have been multiple report I found on this, my remote ssh connection is the only way I could fix it since AWS doesn't have a remote serial console thing like Linode has (or had?).

backendanon··on The Reluctant Sysadmin's Guide to Securing a Linux Server
"the only thing that locking the root account gets you is assurance that if you ever bork the user you created in this guide (or sudo functionality as a whole) you'll have no way to recover without booting into another environment."

As a dev, I say that's a good thing. I've administered my own systems for decades and helped in small startups where we had no full time admin so definitely not new to administering Linux.

backendanon··on Chicago95 – Windows 95 Theme for Linux
Windows and Microsoft are the bureaucracy.
backendanon··on Chicago95 – Windows 95 Theme for Linux
Agreed, I use KDE on both my desktop and personal laptop.
backendanon··on Teams not supported in Firefox on Ubuntu
Considering YouTube videos work just fine on Firefox on Linux, this seems very odd to me that Teams only works on Edge or Chrome.

I clicked the install link for Edge on that page and read through about 75% of the licensing agreement and said nope.

backendanon··on IRC is the only viable chat protocol (2022)
I used to use PidGin for years. It has both IRC and XMPP. Thinking about using it again. I wonder also about the Freenode shenanigans in recent times and who was behind it. https://pidgin.im/posts/2021-06-irc-network-changes/
