babyslothzoo··on Amazon Pulls Books That Promote Unscientific Autism ‘Cures’
Lots of cussing in your comments, you must be passionate about this topic for a particular reason. Passion is good, but the word choice degrades the discourse and implies emotion over reason.

Anyway, perhaps a better approach is to label such books as 'unproven', 'pseudoscience', or even fiction, but continue to sell them. The idea of banning books because of their subject is a very slippery slope.

FWIW there are tons of other inaccurate, unproven, pseudoscience, or fiction books out there that are also damaging to public health. For example, any dieting book that promotes anything aside from caloric reduction for fat loss is basically fiction, and obesity is by far the largest public health crisis to face the USA with 80% of adults impacted. Would you recommend banning those books as well?

Are they anymore so than other cars driven where they salt the roads? I have not heard that.

Isn't this well known? Toyotas have legendary reliability

babyslothzoo··on Solution to Harvard’s admissions problem is simple: run a lottery
> There isn't a clean metric for most qualified or most elite, and there really can't be

For an academic institution or an athletic endeavor, I completely disagree. Performance in these environments is measurable. Elite performance is obvious, observable, and measurable.

Should a theoretical elite university basketball team sign and start a 4'11 80lbs person who makes 1% of shots and has only played basketball maybe a half dozen times before total but they happen to be the very best player from their school? What if they're technically the best basketball player in their schools history? Are they therefore an elite basketball player, and an elite performer? I would say no, observably and measurably not.

babyslothzoo··on Solution to Harvard’s admissions problem is simple: run a lottery
Why?

Is this not supposed to be an elite university for elite students?

babyslothzoo··on 3 years later, IntelliJ is still unusably slow on macOS with a 4K display
Speaking of unusably slow, loading that website in Chrome on a Mac pegs CPU at about 110%

The value in elite universities is the network
babyslothzoo··on Solution to Harvard’s admissions problem is simple: run a lottery
Would it be a problem to remove all identity categories (name/legacy/gender/ethnicity/origin/etc) of applicants and simply admit the most qualified students?

Agreed if you expand that to social media in general.
babyslothzoo··on Design flaw behind MacBook Pro’s “stage light” effect
> I really don't understand Apple's obsessions with thinness. Do they really think that a few millimetres off the depth of a laptop is worth sacrificing reliability like this?

Ironically there are quite a few PC laptops that are thinner. With better keyboards, and useful ports.

> Gut flora is the new frontier of neurology. It’s worth studying the phenomenon.

Certainly agree on that in a very broad sense, far exceeding this topic. But in terms of obesity, any change to the microbiome is in response to the intake and food abuse, it's another effect rather than a cause.

babyslothzoo··on What we can learn from overweight pets about human obesity
> The question is, how does one generally control this?

How does one generally control becoming addicted to any addictive substance? Generally, moderation or abstinence, particularly for those susceptible to addiction.

Food addiction is not so different from drug or alcohol addiction, though food has a much shorter 'high' associated with it than nearly any drug. And food addiction is societally acceptable, whereas drug addicts are generally looked down upon.

babyslothzoo··on What we can learn from overweight pets about human obesity
We can have a very interesting discussion on leptin resistance, insulin, etc, as these are relevant to myriad conditions, but surely you agree that is a different discussion from thermodynamics, which is where this all begins. Gaining and losing weight is not some nebulous scientific mystery.
babyslothzoo··on What we can learn from overweight pets about human obesity
I am perplexed as to why advocating for basic science is considered tantamount to trolling
babyslothzoo··on What we can learn from overweight pets about human obesity
Thermodynamics are false? Show me the evidence!
babyslothzoo··on What we can learn from overweight pets about human obesity
Your rhetorical question is intentionally obtuse, you'll never have a productive conversation on any topic by creating your own strawman and falsehoods to argue with.

As for addiction, addiction to smoking, food, drugs, alcohol, etc it's all the same mechanism.

babyslothzoo··on DuckDuckGo will use Apple Maps
Why hasn't Apple bought DuckDuckGo?

I also think the name DuckDuckGo is too long and too cumbersome, they should consider rebranding to something simpler. Branding matters.

babyslothzoo··on California’s Monarch Butterfly Population Hits Record Low
True. And I think there's a strong argument to be made that humans will destroy themselves before getting there.
babyslothzoo··on California’s Monarch Butterfly Population Hits Record Low
It's likely that all matters of unsustainable behavior will eventually be looked upon that way by a more enlightened future. Unless we continue to dumb ourselves down with misinformation, willful ignorance, and the banishment of uncomfortable/unpopular ideas, of course.
babyslothzoo··on Study: Bias Drops Dramatically for Sexual Orientation and Race – But Not Weight
Oh yes of course, it's a "disease" that happened to put a chocolate bar into my mouth last night.

You are so confident in your knowledge on this topic that you deflect and post an irrelevant link. Brilliant dialog and engagement, what a great debate we are having here.

BRB my disease is inflicting me with a carb-loaded bagel this morning. You see, it is not simply that I am overconsuming calories for whatever reason (addictive / compulsive reward seeking behavior? No certainly not), instead the simple physics of weight gain and weight loss is a disease.

Damnit, I dropped my iPhone on the floor. It must be that disease of physics known as gravity!

babyslothzoo··on Study: Bias Drops Dramatically for Sexual Orientation and Race – But Not Weight
Sure, now replace "food" with "drug" or "alcohol" and it's the same argument, and much of the same pathology for that matter
babyslothzoo··on Study: Bias Drops Dramatically for Sexual Orientation and Race – But Not Weight
What disease is it that causes someone to routinely consume far more calories than required for their body to operate?

Excess food consumption is not a disease.

Now you can certainly argue, and quite effectively, that excess food consumption is addictive behavior, nearly identical to drug or alcohol abuse, but it's not a disease. There are conscious decisions made, and repeated. You are eating the donuts. You are drinking the vodka. You are shooting the heroin. You are smoking the cigarette. The substances might be addictive, but there is still an active and continuously ongoing decision making process going on.

babyslothzoo··on Joy of Being a Woman in Her 70s
Why?
babyslothzoo··on Study: Bias Drops Dramatically for Sexual Orientation and Race – But Not Weight
Unsurprising, given that sexual orientation and race are not the result of choices. There is no decision to be made, no change in input will change the output.

Dietary habits are entirely active choices, it's an active decision making process, and weight is the outcome of those inputs. Gaining or losing weight is basic physics.

Perhaps obesity and food abuse/addiction should be looked at much the same way that drug abuse/addiction is looked at. Obesity is the natural outcome of food abuse.

babyslothzoo··on Joy of Being a Woman in Her 70s
This could/should be

"Joy of Being a (Human) In Their 70s"

Very little is relevant to gender, at all.

babyslothzoo··on People older than 65 share the most fake news, a new study finds
I find it interesting that many people, especially boomers, can go to the grocery store and recognize checkout tabloids as obvious hoaxes, yet they stumble into something much more ridiculous online and determine it to be true.

They seem particularly susceptible to confirmation bias in propaganda memes and literal fake news.
