babyslothzoo··on We launched an app with $500k annual revenue, and then Apple copied it
I'm specifically referencing the clear schadenfreude.
babyslothzoo··on Asian countries take a stand against the rich world’s plastic waste
Interesting.

Meanwhile, apparently Asian countries dump more plastic into the ocean than the rest of the world combined.

babyslothzoo··on The End of Political Cartoons at The New York Times
How depressing.
babyslothzoo··on NYT promotes questionable study on Google and the media
So disappointing but I have noticed the same thing.

NYT has dove so deep into identity politics, opinion, agenda, and editorial that it's very hard to imagine their actual legitimate journalistic/reporting division is not being negatively impacted and influenced.

babyslothzoo··on Depression is increasing among Americans reaching middle age
Presumably this tracks economic and social status closely, and perhaps the meeting (or not) of traditional American life goals; marriage, kids, house, safety, economic security, etc

In that case, an increase would not be surprising. Many people are simply falling through the cracks, or are a decade or two behind where prior generations were by the same age.

babyslothzoo··on SAT to Add ‘Adversity Score’ That Rates Students’ Hardships
The only way to be truly fair with admissions is to admit blind of any defacto discriminatory identity/categorization method and based entirely on competency and scores. I realize that is unpopular for a variety of reasons, but are elite academic institutions meant to be elite academic institutions, or are they social engineering laboratories?
babyslothzoo··on SAT to Add ‘Adversity Score’ That Rates Students’ Hardships
Nails it, there are so many avenues for abuse with this and they will be abused accordingly.
babyslothzoo··on Study Finds Ultra-Processed Foods Drive Weight Gain
This should have been obvious to anyone for ages now.

Ultra processed foods are almost always significantly higher in calories.

babyslothzoo··on “Be yourself” is terrible advice
I think it's OK to judge in this case given the articles casual sexism and racism, inevitably alongside Godwin's Law.
babyslothzoo··on Its butterfly keyboard design has failed, but Apple has yet to admit its mistake
I too experience keyboard problems on the new MacBook Air keyboard design. Spontaneously unresponsive keys, and a spacebar that inserts two spaces regularly. In any endeavor that requires precision syntax to be entered in a reliable manner, that is an obvious problem.

On a positive note, the new MacBook Air has an Escape key, function row, and does not include a Touch Bar.

babyslothzoo··on “Be yourself” is terrible advice
The lack of self awareness in this article is cringeworthy.

Just read the headline, that's as good as it gets.

babyslothzoo··on Going hungry affects children for their whole lives
Food addiction, overeating, and the resulting obesity also affect children (and adults) their whole lives, leading to immense increase in disease and a shortened lifespan, amongst other problems.

What a strange situation we have where there are people simultaneously starving with insufficient food and nutrition, and also a massive population that is dramatically overfeeding their way into catastrophic health problems.

babyslothzoo··on Baked MacBook Air: A cautionary recipe
I have a friend who did this with a PC motherboard, and it worked. Personally I would never try it.
babyslothzoo··on Stop using poison on your lawn
Yes, much of the media is, and when it's bothered to be labeled as opinion it is definitely opinion.

I find much NYTimes Opinion to be distasteful, cringeworthy, divisive, propaganda, and even inciting, but it seems a fairly reasonable opinion that unnecessary poison use is bad.

Do have the opinion that poison on a lawn is good?

babyslothzoo··on Stop using poison on your lawn
I don't consider maintaining or not maintaining a yard to be romantic, it's more of a chore. Gardening is a rewarding activity, but it's also not particularly romantic, it's what humans did for thousands of years to get food.

If I let my yard grow wild then I quickly have a large variety of wildflowers, interesting plants, and mixed wildlife in my yard.

Once an environment has been altered or landscaped in anyway, it requires what is considered neglect (and/or a lot of work) to get it back to a natural state. For most people with any sort of ever manicured yard, it's simpler to mow. Otherwise by modern standards it can be unsightly, is mostly socially unacceptable, considered bad for property values, etc, and it can also minimize the human use of a field.

babyslothzoo··on 2.7M Americans Still Get Netflix DVDs in the Mail
I am also surprised it's not quite a bit higher.

There are many, many parts of the USA where the 'high speed' internet service is somewhere between 1mbps to 3mbps maximum, or slower, assuming there's any broadband at all.

Internet speeds plummet when you're in most rural areas, often even semi-rural smaller towns that are 30-45 minutes outside of major cities have comically slow internet.

Why is this garbage on hacker news?

Anecdotal baloney combined with pseudoscience and misrepresented before/after photos of people who had braces/orthodontic work. LOL, no.

babyslothzoo··on Why Some Doctors Hesitate to Screen Smokers for Lung Cancer (2015)
VOMIT, Victim Of Modern Imaging Technology, is a term among doctors for a reason.

Generally the more you know the better, but sometimes things can be stumbled upon that might otherwise be irrelevant yet the intervention can then introduce new risk or some other unique problem or undesired side effect. There aren't always easy answers.

babyslothzoo··on The Burden of Proof: Why People Must Support Their Arguments
Sure, but how does this work in todays era where feelings/opinion are considered by many to be the same as fact or at least valid support for an argument?
babyslothzoo··on Boys trapped in Thai cave were drugged for risky rescue dives

babyslothzoo··on Google may rank sites for queries that don't appear on the page at all
The more Google uses this type of presumptive search behavior rather than what I'm actually searching for, the more I find myself using Duckduckgo and Bing for finding specific things with specific search queries.

If I am searching for "xyz abc" I am searching for those specific terms for a reason, so please don't present me with results for the entirely unrelated "123", and no I am not talking about showing synonyms.

babyslothzoo··on Where There Is No Doctor: A Village Health Care Handbook
> maybe a quarter of the people out there in the waiting area don't

That's probably a very low estimate, depending on the ER and region anyway.

The ER is too often used as a general clinic / doctors office, psychiatric ward, or even homeless shelters in many areas. The latter issue with the homeless taking up considerable ER space and hospital beds may be unique to the west coast, where homelessness is far beyond crisis levels.

This is obviously a multifactorial problem at many levels.

babyslothzoo··on Death of the Calorie
> I just cannot take seriously anything that claims exercise and calorie restriction are ever ineffective

Nor should you, because it is utter nonsense.

Science denial with weight loss and obesity is just as prolific as science denial with climate, pollution, evolution, flat earth, sex, evolution, and any other post-fact topic.

babyslothzoo··on Death of the Calorie
> I used to believe firmly in this too. Now, I'm a bit more open-minded, and I don't believe it's as simple as the "law of thermodynamics".

The wonderful thing about physics and science is that it does not matter what you believe, fact is fact :)

babyslothzoo··on Death of the Calorie
Quite a headline, I was hoping for some revolutionary new model or adjustment to physics and the known laws of thermodynamics but instead I found the same tired arguments of denialism and ignorance about dietary guidelines and why people are fat to begin with (hint: fat is stored excess energy, that excess energy enters the body through the mouth).

> Most government guidelines indicated that, as a man, he needed 2,500 calories a day to maintain his weight (the target for women is 2,000)

Those guidelines alone are a recipe for rampant morbid obesity, and most people eat far more than that as evidenced by the rapidly expanding obesity rate. The majority of people are simply far too sedentary to recommend anywhere near that level of caloric intake, given the levels of obesity they could easily cut those guidelines by a third if not in half. Or even less if they wanted to promote cures to obesity related disease like type-2 diabetes.

By the way, eating about 800 calories a day will cause weight loss (not surprising, laws of physics still apply) and reverse type-2 diabetes.

https://discover.dc.nihr.ac.uk/content/signal-000552/type-2-...

Oh well, let the science denial continue. Whether it is weight and obesity, evolution, climate, pollution, biological sex, evolution, flat earth, creationism, in the modern era facts no longer matter.

babyslothzoo··on Why entrepreneurs are leaving the Bay Area for their next startup
TLDR: cost of living

But leaving for another west coast city is not going to improve things much, housing and cost of living in Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland, etc are also very high when compared to costs elsewhere in the USA.

The midwest and south should be aggressively courting entrepreneurs based on cost of living alone.

babyslothzoo··on Facebook, Axios and NBC Paid to Whitewash Wikipedia Pages
Does anyone take Wikipedia seriously at this point?

Calling Wikipedia 'neutral' is comical, it's full of opinion, ideology, bias, misinformation, disinformation, astroturfing, and other nonsense noise and utter garbage.

Are tips required to stop using a service?

Call and text people you actually want to keep in touch with. Pretty easy.
