babar··on Top countries by robot density (Graph)
How is the world average higher than any continent except Europe?
babar··on John Gruber: I'll Tell You What's Fair
I always thought the difference now between Apple and Google is that Apple is competing through licensing whereas Google is trying to compete through technology. This is what makes people question Apple - refusing Google Voice and Flash through the app store approvals, refusing Flash cross-compiling and Google/AdMob ads through the developer's license. Google usually comes across as being more open and willing to compete through the actual marketplace instead of in court, which I think appeals more to most developers and technologists.

And I don't think Gruber is making a coherent point here. Why even argue about who started it? That just comes across as whining and a ultimately a semantic argument. Of course companies will compete - let's talk about the implementations, what is best for consumers, and which is best for developers.

babar··on Beware of MBAs: The business school curriculum teaches how to suck at startups
Leave-behind decks are used in enterprise sales to allow your internal champion to present to their colleagues and superiors to go through whatever process is necessary to move the sales cycle forward. If you can give them the deck using their own corporate template you save them some time and they are more willing to advocate for you when you aren't onsite or in the meeting.
babar··on Tell HN: Add a '+' to the end of any bit.ly link to get the full URL.
How much of that is because of how terrible twitter's visibility into older tweets and search functionality is?
babar··on Ninite (YC W08) shares UI tweak data, puts download.com and FileHippo on notice
This also makes a very nice list of recommended apps. Please don't lose sight of that aspect once you start getting swamped with requests to add additional tools!
babar··on Posterous silently changes all external links to affiliate links
They could be more transparent about their usage of this, since it isn't indicated anywhere on their admin pages, especially for people who may have been using their own affiliate links which are being overwritten.

Having a paid version which would disable this would be another nice option for them to provide.

babar··on The Original Techcrunch 40: Where are they now?
Isn't the classic VC model an expectation of only ~10% real successes, a larger amount break even/moderate success, and about half failures? Although that may be a better success rate than non-funded companies, getting VC is not in any way equivalent to a guarantee of success.
babar··on Ask HN: Would you use a cord bank?
I think the best option right now would be to donate the cord blood to a public blood bank if that option is available in your area. That doesn't cost you, and it benefits a child more immediately and helps to advance the research. I think there is a chance of benefit to storing it yourself, but the marketing from these companies seemed to be preying on parents' sense of guilt so much that it was off-putting to me. I can put those thousands of dollars to better use to benefit my children. Of course, if the money isn't a meaningful amount to you, your decision process may be different.
babar··on Microsoft: Google Chrome doesn't respect your privacy
Incorrect. Incognito mode does not use the search provider's autocomplete results.
babar··on Family or Career - Zero Sum Game?
Steve Blank had a good post about this, if you want some perspective from someone who has actually dealt with these issues:

babar··on Science fails to face the shortcomings of statistics
I think in some fields achieving (c) is almost impossible - the n number needed would be too expensive for most labs working with animal models, for instance. (b) would be interesting, especially if it led to a culture where "failed" results are still worth publishing because they disprove something. I think (a) is the one worth focusing on first, since that seems the most achievable and would let you back-apply some of the other improvements at a later date.
babar··on Science fails to face the shortcomings of statistics
I would split theoretical ability and statistical ability into separate skillsets. Having the understanding in the field and the ability to posit reasonable hypotheses to test is very different (at least in most fields!) from having the statistical knowledge and ability to properly generate results.

And I think larger labs do frequently separate out a few of these. I'd love to have a better understanding of how industry labs differ from academic labs in that respect.

babar··on Ask HN - What Virtual PBX Do I Use
We just set up virtualpbx.com. The web ui is kind of clunky, and the automated text-to-voice for the message is terrible, but it had the options we needed: setting up out toll-free number to be routed to sales and support and send out emails if the call went to voicemail. We didn't care about setting up actual office phones at this point - everyone just uses their cells. We mostly wanted a way to avoid people having to give out their personal numbers or a single office number as a point of contact. This gives us the flexibility we need as we hire more people, reassign people, or have people leave.
babar··on Global warming? Check for yourself
1. You assume a (fairly) anonymous, amateur source based on a single data point is more unbiased than someone who has devoted most of their lives to collecting data? I totally agree with the movement to make scientific data more open, but I think you are really underestimating the motivations of most scientists.

2. Extrapolating from a single data set leads to huge biases in interpretation. There are too many uncontrolled variables to say anything meaningful beyond what the temperature in this city has averaged. I think the rate of change that people are worried about in overall temps would probably not even register on this graph clearly.

If you are going to criticize how science is done, you should probably learn more about how it is done.

And some basic statistics.

babar··on Please, Evernote, wake up. I wanted you to win.
