baash05··on Ask HN: Do you agree with Covid passports?
Agreed. And what kind of steps would a person who's had the shot have to go through to get the passport? Would it be internationally recognised. Who would administer it? How much would it cost the tax payers to admin it?

Australia spent > 80 million on the CovidSafe app, and AFIK its helped trace ~8 people.

baash05··on Ask HN: Do you agree with Covid passports?
Nope. If you watch the latest rounds of Fauci, he is still recommending masks to people who have had the jab, and in fact to people who have had Covid and recovered. If he believes you can still transmit after these, then I'm going to side with him. To those who would argue its political pandering. Which party? He's advised 7 presidents, and was put in his role by Reagan.

Given you are still a carrier (according to Fauci), what would the passport server?

baash05··on Ask HN: New manager with no management experience and only one report
Ask yourself if he/she is someone you'd want as a manager. I mean personality wise. Would they make a good manager, if they were not your manager?
baash05··on Facebook to restore news in Australia after last-minute deal with government
Yep. Because people pay to have things on FB. That's good enough for small companies, good enough for big.
baash05··on Facebook to restore news in Australia after last-minute deal with government
Aus bent the knee.
baash05··on Changes to sharing and viewing news on Facebook in Australia
I'd say the only time I ever read SMH is when there's a link in my FB. When mates or groups I'm a part of drop a link in. To be honest, I don't remember the last time I read general news that wasn't in my feed. Apart from a few other aggregators (hackers news included)
baash05··on Changes to sharing and viewing news on Facebook in Australia
It applies to any company the Gov wishes. If company XYZ is a news aggregator, then the gov could target them on a whim.

It's not about the monopoly that FB has. If company XYZ started getting fined, we'd hear nothing about it. That garage based company would just go away.

FB, just happens to have enough cash to say no.

baash05··on Changes to sharing and viewing news on Facebook in Australia
I agree 100% The tech community gives solid and reasoned warnings against the law, and they are ignored. Google warns against the law, and caves. Facebook warns against the law and stands up. I think FB and Google and Twitter are the only companies that can really win this. Facebook didn't back down. Good on them.
baash05··on Studies That Show Lockdowns Are Ineffective at Slowing Covid-19
Nah.. don't buy it. Here in Australia we tried em. We did them hard, and right, and then we had zero's. Zero cases in 10 days, and less than 1000 dead total. If they don't work, what are we doing right?
baash05··on Facebook Disabled My Account After I Criticized Them
I think it's more, "don't consider any part of it private." I always ask people for their email password when they say "I've got nothing to hide" I think it's rubbish.. At the same time, I treat facebook (all of it) as if it were public. If I wouldn't wear a t-shirt with my DM's on it, then I don't write them.
baash05··on Facebook Disabled My Account After I Criticized Them
whatsapp. It's been drastically changed by facebook
baash05··on Facebook Disabled My Account After I Criticized Them
Seems logical if you're using their stuff, they get to do anything they want with what you put there. Expect them to read every word, and use it to make money.
baash05··on Facebook Disabled My Account After I Criticized Them
My understanding is.. You get an invite to my house, and then when you walk in, you tell me how much you hate it here. I ask you to leave, and you're surprised. Does that about sum up the interaction?
baash05··on Ask HN: What is the one thing you find odd about any programming language
In ruby, `unless` bugs me. Not that it's hard to understand, but the assertion that it makes code easier to read has always puzzled me. if !(x) was never all that complex, and saying it is hard for new programmers to understand has always troubled me.
baash05··on North Dakota needed to hire Latvians to manage an ancient state computer system
Any programmer could write in the syntax of cobol, but it's a very different way of thinking from c based languages. Stepping into an undocumented code base is killer, but one that is "un conventional". I'd wonder about the career path of someone stepping into this role would have. What's next?
baash05··on How to Search Like a Programmer?
I think programmers use binary-search. I personally clean when I'm searching for something. Like refactoring really :)
baash05··on Are You a Contrarian?
no
baash05··on Woman dies during a ransomware attack on a German hospital
I can't agree with your about the tech community engaging policy makers. Every single time I've seen tech tell policy makers something is bad, or that it will work exactly the reverse of the intended, policy makers do just the thing they were cautioned against. In the last 2 years Australia (for instance) has gone against at least 3 major objections by tech. Costing jobs and security.

baash05··on Ruby adds experimental support for Rightward assignments
It's actually very simple to illustrate. Say this 5 => x in english. (three words or less)

Or this one

cat => person.pet

baash05··on Ruby adds experimental support for Rightward assignments
+ 100
baash05··on Ruby adds experimental support for Rightward assignments
Oh. The bugs that this would produce. And spotting it visually would be killer
baash05··on Ruby adds experimental support for Rightward assignments
Agreed. And it doesn't really improve anything. The argument that it makes code easier to read is bogus. Perhaps for people who only work in ruby. I suspect rubo-cop would have a rule against this a week after it was added.
baash05··on Ruby adds experimental support for Rightward assignments
The problem is.. most popular languages use leftward assignment. Teaching a noob this would make other languages harder to read. I can switch from Java, to c++ to ruby.. My 9 year old figured out the leftward assignment. It feels like a change for change sake.
baash05··on Ruby adds experimental support for Rightward assignments
This is so ugly. Already we have things like AND vs && or tailing if's that don't quite work like three line if's or how scoping do..end vs {} is ever so slightly different.

I'd wonder how the right assignment would work differently. What small gotcha would it create.

I also wonder how my co-workers would take it, if I started using it.. Or if I figured out how it was different and used it for the once case that it worked.

For me. having a million ways to do something leads to slower dev time. More context I'd need to load.

baash05··on Ask HN: How is work from home going several weeks in?
I personally find it more relaxing. The idea of being on the train, or bus fills me with despair. Crammed into a can kills my soul. I walk in the morning with my travel mug and sit near a park. I get home before 9am and start my day very very relaxed. I get more done, as meetings are more regulated. Todo lists are clearer and well thought out. In all it is better for me.

Oh and I see my kids way more.

baash05··on Ask HN: Should email verification be mandatory during the registration process?
I say yeah. If your site has any user generated content, or has a payment required. Allow the user to work for a few hours, or limit their ability to do things while un-verified.
baash05··on “I've got nothing to hide”
What is your email and facebook password?
