baash05··on Ask HN: How well do your front end and back end teams work together?
I'm a BE dev, and I can say (from my perspective) we work really well together. It's a REST system and when a FE needs something me and my fellow BE teammates do all we can to give them that something.

During development they use moc's for the payloads that we're not ready to give them. When we build things FOR them all members are happy.

A good rule is to have the teams come to an agreement on the data that they need to show the user. Then have the BE team build out a rough payload.

Paired programming on features is always good.

Myself personally. I have a simple thing to keep in mind. FE keeps the customer happy, I keep FE happy, ops keeps us all happy. As long as BE remember they are there for the FE, everything flows smooth.

baash05··on Ask HN: How much gas we could save in EU if we reduce our heating temp by 3°?
I grew up, and spent most of my life in Canada. I moved to Australia in my 30's. I have to say, I have never had a more uncomfortable winter than my first year here. I was cold all the time. Down to my bones cold. I hated it.

I eventually found a house that had decent insulation, and since then I've never let it get cold in my place. I've got solar, and I keep the heat cranked.

baash05··on Ask HN: Why are you programming your hobby projects in a niche language?
I think 90% of devs love to refactor. On toys app's it's great fun.
baash05··on Ask HN: GDPR pop-ups are getting so annying, what should we do about it?
My fear is.. I'm one of the "isn't often" exceptions. I don't use an electric skateboard, or j-walk. I've been fined for both. If there is an edge case for a fine, they will fine me.
baash05··on Ask HN: GDPR pop-ups are getting so annying, what should we do about it?
Here's the thing. The GDPR isn't really that great a set of rules. It's too vague, and really hard to manage.

I do however treasure privacy rights. That's why I don't use cloud flare. It blocks TOR, and many VPN's.

I've almost built my site to favour those methods of privacy, and I highly recommend them to people

I have paid the price of being on TOR often enough. Heaps of sights are beyond my reach.

People have the right to avoid cookies, but those rights come at a cost.

Oddly most of my users are from the EU, they just use VPN's

baash05··on Ask HN: GDPR pop-ups are getting so annying, what should we do about it?
A few weeks back someone lost a case in Germany because they used google fonts, and forgot to tell people. After that, I say, why take the risk? I have more important things to think about.
baash05··on Ask HN: GDPR pop-ups are getting so annying, what should we do about it?
I just put an ip-address to country list in my middleware and block all the GDPR countries. Now I have no issue with popups or cookies.

Honestly, I'd like to see more people follow that. I got the idea from others and it seems like a perfect solution.

People who can't/don't want cookies cannot really use any site I've ever worked on. It makes no sense building things for people who won't ever be customers.

baash05··on Do Not Recommend: User Provided Primary Keys
No no.. why not uuids :D
baash05··on Ask HN: Can we ban Twitter links, please?
NYTimes is just a paywall. There are a few of these. Flagging them as credential_walls or pay_walls would be cool.
baash05··on Do you spend a lot of time just deciding what to watch on Netflix? Any hacks?
Start on season one of Greys Anatomy.

Or season 1 of deep space 9.

It will keep you busy for months.

baash05··on Trump’s social media app will reportedly go live on Presidents’ Day
Or just ddos'ed.
baash05··on Tell HN: YouTube and how my wife lost 7 years of work
That's on them though. I mean a DVD burner and a shoe box would remove all backup issues here.
baash05··on Tell HN: YouTube and how my wife lost 7 years of work
I'd say shadow bans would work better. We did this at a company I worked for (back in the day) When a user posted things we didn't like, we stopped showing it. The only person who could read the post was the poster.

This works in the content creation sphere.

baash05··on Tell HN: YouTube and how my wife lost 7 years of work
Seems to me a DVD burner would work wonder here. Make a vid, upload it to Youtub, burn a copy, put it in a sleeve, and you have a very reliable backup system. I've got DVD's that I made over 15 years ago, that are still watchable.. I've got a CD that I burned 21 years ago (wedding music). It's in my car right now.
baash05··on Tell HN: YouTube and how my wife lost 7 years of work
An s3 account in this case would work too.. Or a github account. There are dozens of services that one could use to backup videos.

A stack of DVD's in a book shelf.

baash05··on Bill Gates: Covid risks have dramatically reduced but another pandemic is coming
I think he had to take a break. Ran out of microchips. Nice to know he's got a backup plan.
baash05··on Ask HN: How do you test no-code apps?
Add to that, how do you version control, and pull request.
baash05··on Why won’t anybody teach her math?
When I went to school, I paid X dollars per term. I figured out how much that translated to lecture hour. It was more than a movie. If I paid for a movie and it shut down half way though, I'd be rather pissed. :)

I focused on that for each lecture.

baash05··on Why won’t anybody teach her math?
I remember taking a course at university where the teacher bragged the first day that half the students will fail. It struck me immediately that this professor was bragging that he sucked at his job of teaching.

If I said half my patients won't live through my treatment, or half the cars I fix will crash, I'd not be the person others would seek out.

If you are so good at your job (of teaching people a subject) that a coin toss is likely to do a better job on the exam, you suck at your job.

You are a Teacher. That is what the person sitting in the class is paying you for. To teach them. You work for the students. For all the high minded ideals, you are just staff to the people sitting in front of you.

baash05··on Ask HN: What product do you wish existed?
A fully electric harmonica. No audible reeds. I love playing the harmonica, but it's not super easy to find a place to practice.
baash05··on Drug dealer busted after picture of his hand holding cocaine showed fingerprints
They may have had him in custody already and got a warrant to scan his whole hand.
baash05··on Drug dealer busted after picture of his hand holding cocaine showed fingerprints
That might be my hand (not admitting it is), but that looks like frozen Greek yogurt.

Unless of course they can test for the presence of drugs in the photo, I'm not sure why they wasted their time. Whats the chain of evidence on the substance in the photo?

baash05··on Glorified electric golf carts for all
The bit that would be hard is the "all for one" thing with cars. People don't drive a massive SUV to the store because they can only afford 1 car. It's because they can only park 1 car.

When I lived in the city a small car like this would have been great, but as I had 1 parking spot for my apartment, I wouldn't have been able to have both a Gas and an EV.

baash05··on For some searches the whole screen on Google is now ads
I was searching for skateboard decks on amazon and sorted by price.. The first 5 pages were all sponsored products.
baash05··on Ask HN: What software do you pay for that's not a browser-based SaaS?
Parelles, to allow my kids to use windows on mac's
baash05··on Robot Dogs Take Another Step Towards Deployment at the U.S.-Mexico Border
I am rather sure I've seen this episode already.
baash05··on Career advice nobody gave me: Never ignore a recruiter
I've landed almost every gig in the last 10 years through the same recruitment firm. They've been so awesome, and they have a finger on the pulse of the industry. I've had excellent dealings with recruiters over the years from various companies.
baash05··on Ask HN: How do you explain the sloppiness of modern software?
It's the TODO that's the killer. We are constantly adding tech debt, and never paying it back.
baash05··on GDPR penalty for passing on of IP address to Google by using Google Fonts
I find that hard to understand. What server have you reached? Many sites are designed to be hosted by many servers at the same time. Sites hosted on Amazon are moved around depending on load and your location. Often you'll get part of the site from server X other bits from server Y.. images and css from an asset server and api data from one of many app servers.
baash05··on GDPR penalty for passing on of IP address to Google by using Google Fonts
Sadly cloud flare blocks TOR, most of the time.
