b_e_n_t_o_n··on Indefinite Backpack Travel
I can manage Europe with a pair of white Air Force's and flip flops. But I do agree. An extra pair of shoes is really nice to have.
b_e_n_t_o_n··on Indefinite Backpack Travel
He's building js apps with https://sailsjs.com ?
b_e_n_t_o_n··on Indefinite Backpack Travel
I think it depends on how you're travelling. If you're staying in hostels and moving locations frequently (v common for solo travel), walking/busing instead of uber/taxi, using just one bag is peak. But if you're staying longer or you have your own room, getting rides places etc, then it might be worth having more clothes and dealing with lugging your suitcase around occasionally.

Doesn't even need to be a suitcase, a big duffel bag can hold just as much clothing and be more convenient for carrying around, although you still need to check it at the airport.

I don't think they have the same definition of "best" that you do.
b_e_n_t_o_n··on Apps SDK
I think the end game is that rather than spitting out text back, the LLM transforms your plaintext request to something processable, and then chooses some relevant widgets to display the results.
b_e_n_t_o_n··on Apps SDK
Yeah this seems accurate to me. All the talk of a bubble etc, but LLMs see genuinely useful at tasks like this and I'm sure we'll find more uses as time goes on.
b_e_n_t_o_n··on Apps SDK
To me it feels like the default choice in the industry, perhaps it's not and I'm wrong but if I could have that feeling I can see how the AI can as well.
b_e_n_t_o_n··on Apple's Unlawful Evil
People are blaming the locked down nature of the App Store but if the government really wanted to stop a specific online activity, making it a website or PWA isn't gonna save it. The issue is the government having this type of control.
b_e_n_t_o_n··on Apple's Unlawful Evil
Politics is rarely about written rules.
b_e_n_t_o_n··on Apple's Unlawful Evil
That sounds accurate
b_e_n_t_o_n··on Apple's Unlawful Evil
A lot of people aren't against the government having the power to do this; they're simply against the current government doing it.
b_e_n_t_o_n··on Jeff Bezos says AI is in a bubble but society will get 'gigantic' benefits
This seems obviously and trivially correct to me...
b_e_n_t_o_n··on Apple takes down ICE tracking apps after pressure from DOJ
Which is...?
b_e_n_t_o_n··on Apple takes down ICE tracking apps after pressure from DOJ
The government is a centralization of power, it doesn't matter if our devices are "decentralized" if the government can simply make it illegal to use unlocked devices. Or encryption. Or VPNs. Etc.
b_e_n_t_o_n··on Apple takes down ICE tracking apps after pressure from DOJ
The problem isn't the centralized control, it's the power the governments have.
b_e_n_t_o_n··on Our efforts, in part, define us
I think this is accurate.

b_e_n_t_o_n··on Bevy 0.17: ECS-driven game engine built in Rust
Solari looks interesting. I'm kind of curious how Bevy handles plugins like that which I feel must require some deep integrations in the rendering pipeline and shaders. From my experience with Three that involves some nasty shader patching etc...
b_e_n_t_o_n··on Comparing Rust to Carbon
Yes there are more mature choices now, but Apple is serious about making Swift a c++ replacement and if they do that well, it actually has a chance of being a One Language To Rule Them All. Rust is too low level for people to use for Applications, servers etc, which is where Swift shines, and Apple is proving that Swift is viable as a systems language too.
b_e_n_t_o_n··on Instant Checkout and the Agentic Commerce Protocol
That sounds pretty elite to me. I didn't mean it as elitist.
b_e_n_t_o_n··on Instant Checkout and the Agentic Commerce Protocol
It's true only for a select few products that are actually elite. Like Apple or Dyson.
b_e_n_t_o_n··on Comparing Rust to Carbon
The lack of windows support is a feature, not a flaw :D
b_e_n_t_o_n··on Comparing Rust to Carbon
How so? Maybe 5 years ago that would be the case but they've been steadily making it cross platform and it's a great choice now for CLI's, servers, embedded etc.
b_e_n_t_o_n··on Comparing Rust to Carbon
I think languages that take C++ interop seriously will win over the long term. And that means I'm saying Swift is a better bet than Rust long term. So yeah.
b_e_n_t_o_n··on Larry Ellison on AI-powered surveillance [video] (2024)
That could be true too lol
b_e_n_t_o_n··on Larry Ellison on AI-powered surveillance [video] (2024)
I doubt he sees it like that. Plenty of authoritarians think authoritarianism is best for society.
b_e_n_t_o_n··on Ask HN: How Do I Get over My Existential Crisis?
If you're in front end, build yourself an impressive portfolio! You need to differentiate yourself on a different axis than a resume.
b_e_n_t_o_n··on The AI coding trap
> LLMs do not have taste

This is the fundamental issue with LLM's imo.

b_e_n_t_o_n··on The AI coding trap
Depends on what you're building. If it's another crud app sure, but if its something remotely novel you just can't understand the landscape without walking through it at least once.
b_e_n_t_o_n··on Handy – Free open-source speech-to-text app written in Rust
Why does the title specify the language used when it's not even mentioned on the home page?
