b1n··on Thousands of subreddits pledge to go dark after the Reddit CEO’s recent remarks
One solution to the profitability problem might be to remove all the non-profitable users.

When I browse the home page all I see is anti-work, anti-capitalism, nuance-less politics, etc.

As people have mentioned, the free money decade is over - users are going to have to start becoming Customers if they want their voices to be listened to.

b1n··on The brand new Thunderbird logo
Because a successful rebrand (like this one) can onboard new users as well as keep existing ones.

i.e.

you are unlikely to stop using Thunderbird because of this redesign, but someone who doesn't use it now has an increased chance of starting.

b1n··on Modding Age of Empires II with a Sprite-Diffuser
This is great, can't wait unti this is taken to the next level...

(they touch on this at the end of the article)

- An RTS without units or buildings by default.

- The players enter prompts and creates any unit they can imagine.

b1n··on Bypassing Gmail's spam filters with ChatGPT
Spear-fishing now scales.
b1n··on Websites selling abortion pills are sharing sensitive data with Google
Because it IS news to a lot of people. And putting it in context brings home the reality and implications of tracking that many people may not be aware of.

If you've ever seen any SaaS websites where they have...

- Our Product vs Competitor 1

- Our Product vs Competitor 2

- Our Product vs Competitor 3

- Our Product vs etc...

... then you can see why this is important from an SEO perspective.

b1n··on Libreboot 20221214
Congratulations on this release! The people involved are doing important and thankless work.
b1n··on Working with Tailwind CSS every day for 2 years
I'm glad to see all the designers on here really hate tailwind. I hope they persuade my competitors not to use it.

I've been writing CSS since IE 5.5 and I was tired of the whole horrible mess. Tailwind goes against everything I learned about the reasoning and benefits of CSS' styled web page design. Tailwind is right. Tailwind is how CSS should have been.

I (and more importantly my customers) do no care about minor differences in padding, or that the markup looks ugly, or that it takes a few extra minutes to parse the git commit (made up for by massive time savings elsewhere). Tailwind gives you a quick way to get a design that looks good enough while maintaining control over the layout of the page.

Need something custom? No one is stopping you from writing your own classes to compliment the utility classes or from moving common combinations of utility classes into their own class.

b1n··on Web 3.0 – The Great Con
Would you be willing to write a "steel man"[1] argument for any of the technology that underpins web3?

This could be just one of any of the tech or services written using it.

I would be interested to read. Thanks.

b1n··on Someone hacked YandexTaxi and ordered all available taxis to the same location
Is there any way of confirming this?

Without knowledge of Russian or context this could just be taxis on some sort of protest rally.

b1n··on Collapse of emergency healthcare in England may be costing 500 lives every week
The solution is for young people (tax payers) to form a "Youth Union" and start demanding that older people pay more towards their health care.

When this doesn't work, the solution is for the members of this union to leave.

b1n··on Preparedness Paradox
The best strategy for countering the preparedness paradox is to prepare, while simultaneously telling everyone else not to prepare/over-react. Then you get the benefit of preparedness AND the proof that it was required. Win-Win(-lose)!
b1n··on FBI: Stolen PII and deepfakes used to apply for remote tech jobs
Remote workers probably should not have access to large amounts of PII/financial data/etc. in the first place!

There seem to be a few separate issues with remote work:

1. Identification of real people (solvable with SSI's Verifiable Credentials or a traditional KYC company)

2. Employee holding multiple remote jobs (solvable by focusing on productive output rather than number of hours worked)

3. If rogue employee gets 20 jobs they only need to 'work' unproductively for a short time before getting fired. (solution? maybe reduced pay for initial months with the following months of employment overpaying until initial underpayment is made up?)

b1n··on Low economic growth is a slow-burning crisis for Britain
> 2. The elderly are clogging up the system.

The elderly demographic is large and they all vote.

b1n··on Letter in Support of Responsible Fintech Policy

b1n··on FTC fines Twitter $150M for using 2FA phone numbers for ad targeting
Got locked out of facebook for 'suspicious activity' as I was logging in to permanently close account.

Only way to log in now is to provide them with a scan of my passport or drivers license.

...

b1n··on Ask HN: How worried are you about the upcoming recession?
For many people 2008 never ended.

Policy makers (and voters) have kept the zombies alive, pumped assets and introduced exciting new complexity.

This is the big one.

b1n··on Bionic Reading – Convert Text into Better Way to Read Faster
> But, based on what? I don't see any pointers to papers or other academic work or collaboration.

Do you only experience things once they have been thoroughly peer reviewed?

Why not quickly try it out for yourself and decide.

b1n··on Why do those with higher IQs live longer? A new study points to answers
I really enjoyed scrolling through more than half the article before finding the answer.

"""

Part of it seems to be the lifestyle choices that smarter people tend to make: namely, that they smoke at much lower rates. Similarly, smarter people are more likely to follow other healthy practices, have a better handle on their health care, and be less likely to work in a job that puts them at physical risk.

Socioeconomic status could play a role as well, perhaps allowing people to access better education and care

...

There are also genetic factors.

b1n··on Better.com CEO Vishal Garg says he is personally liable for $750M SoftBank loan
How does better.com make money? what is their business model?

The site says they charge zero commissions & lender fees - does this just apply to the loan recipient? maybe it's just commission from the lenders?

b1n··on An Ode to Apple’s Hide My Email
I've been thinking of a new way to use my email...

- Only use one email address: hi@example.com

- Always add a filter: hi+hn@example.com

- Send all emails without a filter to SPAM

Since it's not a common strategy, it is much more likely that spammers remove the +hn before sending an email than add one.

b1n··on Switching from pyenv, rbenv, goenv and nvm to asdf
New GUIX user here. I've found the documentation to be good and the "zealots" seem very friendly - maybe take another look.
b1n··on Master Styles – The First Virtual CSS Engine

b1n··on UK is spending £500k on a PR campaign demonising end-to-end encryption
I think I see what you're getting at [1].

I think that in this case the image is effective as a counter to the argument being presented in the campaign.

- It shows that there are other categories of people who have legitimate reasons to want privacy and not to trust the authority of their country.

- It does it in a way that would not require explanation to anyone familiar with Anne Frank (including lots of people from UK).
