b00ty4breakfast··on False claims in a widely-cited paper
>Reality is absolutely orthogonal to our values...

what? that's nonsense. Not everybody's values are the same, for one thing. Especially as society has become more and more international.

You should be equally skeptical of any result until proper evidence is presented and verified. Values should have no bearing either way on empirical truth-claims.

b00ty4breakfast··on The truth that haunts the Ramones: 'They sold more T-shirts than records'
given the massive influence of 60s girl groups on the Ramones, I would say that getting one of the architects of that sound to produce their record is not selling out.

To stay on the "hair metal" example I gave, getting Mutt Lange circa Pyromania to produce a Ramones record would be selling out.

b00ty4breakfast··on The truth that haunts the Ramones: 'They sold more T-shirts than records'
I know most people don't take the concept of "selling out" seriously anymore, but the Ramones would not be sellouts for making Ramones merch. If they had turned into a hair metal band, where they would otherwise not make hair metal, just so they could sell a bunch of records, that would be selling out. Merely making money is not selling out
b00ty4breakfast··on Jury finds Meta liable in case over child sexual exploitation on its platforms
we should be removing the harmful aspects of modern social, which are harmful for everyone not just minors, by making them unprofitable or even outright illegal.

Instead we are saying "only adults should use this" which, while technically regulating the industry, places the restriction on users.

We're treating it like tobacco or alcohol (2 industries who have similarly spent millions upon millions of dollars in lobbying efforts) but we should be treating it like asbestos.

b00ty4breakfast··on Jury finds Meta liable in case over child sexual exploitation on its platforms
That's because we should be regulating the social media industry rather than regulating social media users.

Unfortunately, social media users don't have billions of dollars to spend on lobbying and related activities around the world.

b00ty4breakfast··on Goodbye to Sora
that's just empty consumption, there's nothing that makes art great in algorithmically generated content except at the shallowest of levels. I mean no disrespect, but that is extremely sad and all too indicative of the instrumental reasoning of the industrial milieu. It's about 2 steps above marrying a sex doll.
b00ty4breakfast··on In Edison’s Revenge, Data Centers Are Transitioning From AC to DC
They're still converting from AC to DC at the datacenter, it just isn't being stepped down at the perimeter. There is no transmission of HVDC going on. This isn't really Edison's revenge, more like his consolation price, ha!
b00ty4breakfast··on Can you get root with only a cigarette lighter? (2024)
if you've got an old disposable flash camera lying around, you can give it a big zap (I felt myself instantly aging like Dorian Gray looking at his portrait as I typed that sentence.)
b00ty4breakfast··on Can you get root with only a cigarette lighter? (2024)
but of course
b00ty4breakfast··on GitHub appears to be struggling with measly three nines availability
yeah, github's business model is not really a git repository but a bunch of other (admittedly useful) stuff that traps people in their ecosystem.
b00ty4breakfast··on GitHub appears to be struggling with measly three nines availability
Until paying customers start leaving en masse, they will continue to shovel out subpar service.
b00ty4breakfast··on Can you get root with only a cigarette lighter? (2024)
my prediction before reading is that they're using the piezo sparker to beat the DUT over the head with a big EMF spike

Edit: Nailed it!

b00ty4breakfast··on The three pillars of JavaScript bloat
The only thing I can think is that folks are getting confused by stuff like the JRE and Node being called "runtime environments".
b00ty4breakfast··on They’re vibe-coding spam now
Spam and LLMs are made for each other; pumping out content, with little concern for quality, at industrial scale is what LLMs most excel at.

Even if it's not the only they can do.

b00ty4breakfast··on The three pillars of JavaScript bloat
I'm not very familiar with rust but I'm pretty sure it has a runtime. Even C has a runtime.

Unless you're talking about an "environment" eg Node or the like

b00ty4breakfast··on Android developer verification: Balancing openness and choice with safety
If the hardware wasn't locked down on so many devices, this wouldn't be an issue because people could choose to use a different OS.
b00ty4breakfast··on France's aircraft carrier located in real time by Le Monde through fitness app
the word "about" in "about 15 years ago" indicates that the writer is making an estimate because exacting precision wrt the timeframe is immaterial to what is being conveyed. Since 2012 was 14 years ago, "about 15" is close enough.
b00ty4breakfast··on Full Disclosure: A Third (and Fourth) Azure Sign-In Log Bypass Found
The state of cyber-security is a joke given that the entirety of civilization depends on these systems to function. It's like we transferred all our stuff into a boat with a gaping hole in the bilge plugged with a wad of duct tape and started sailing towards the open ocean. Forget putting the cart before the horse, the old mare is still in the barn and cart is about 3 counties over, upended in a ditch.
b00ty4breakfast··on Google details new 24-hour process to sideload unverified Android apps
I see a bull charging full-sprint at me, I'm not going to sit here and consider whether he's merely reacting to a loud noise or if he's actively trying to gore me to death. Incidentally limiting user freedom is indistinguishable from purposefully limiting user freedom.
b00ty4breakfast··on Juggalo makeup blocks facial recognition technology (2019)
"things should be legal because some people will do it anyways" is not a very compelling argument. I'm sure I don't need to explain to you why extrapolating this line of though to, for example, murder is silly and not worth taking serious.
b00ty4breakfast··on Iran war energy shock sparks global push to reduce fossil fuel dependence
twitter is a self-selected group these days, even assuming these are real people and not some kind of propaganda op.

It's like going on stormfront and wondering why there's so many white nationalists on the internet.

b00ty4breakfast··on Ask HN: How do you deal with people who trust LLMs?
they don't deduce the truth; they're producing statistical predictions about what words go together (more or less; llm nerds dont @me). If you fed an LLM a bunch of homeopathy texts, it's not going to tell you why homeopathy doesn't work.
b00ty4breakfast··on Ask HN: How do you deal with people who trust LLMs?
where do you think most of that info came from though? Not from the public library
b00ty4breakfast··on OpenAI Has New Focus (on the IPO)
it's only going to get worse once they go public, though maybe not in that specific way.
b00ty4breakfast··on Write up of my homebrew CPU build
I'm going off memory (of a book, not that I was alive in the 40s, ha) so grain of salt etc but I believe the very earliest (edit: electronic, digital) computers were literally rewired every time they need to be re-programmed.
b00ty4breakfast··on Microsoft's 'unhackable' Xbox One has been hacked by 'Bliss'
Ok, I looked it up; Saddam Hussein was executed on December 30, 2006 and the ps3 launched on Nov 11, 2006 in Japan and Nov 17, 2006 in the US. So, technically, he was alive for the launch.
b00ty4breakfast··on Microsoft's 'unhackable' Xbox One has been hacked by 'Bliss'
I haven't looked, but I am pretty sure that Saddam was dead before the ps3 launched. At the very least, his 2003/2004 ouster was before the ca 2007ish (I think) launch date.
b00ty4breakfast··on The “small web” is bigger than you might think
>I dint think it's malicious or even intentional...

it's indirectly intentional in that Google isn't wringing it's hands trying to destroy tiny blogs but they (Google) have deliberately chosen to ignore anything that doesn't play the SEO game, whatever the driver of that game is.

b00ty4breakfast··on Canada's bill C-22 mandates mass metadata surveillance
why even allow for the possibility of misuse? what is the utility of this little addendum?
b00ty4breakfast··on Jeff Bezos wants Washington Post’s newsroom budget halved, productivity doubled
Jeffy wants to have his cake and eat it, too; a propaganda apparatus that turns a profit. The obvious solution would be to not own a spin machine if it's not turning a profit if you're looking to make money. But of course that would leave him without a mouthpiece.

I also wonder how much having his name attached to the thing is responsible for the awful balance sheet ca 2024. It may never turn a profit as long as it's a known Bezos operation.
