b00ty4breakfast··on Can you stop beans from making you gassy?
>Sodium Carbonate (baking soda)

I assume you meant Bicarbonate? Washing soda is pretty heavy duty and I've always used 1/4 tsp bicarb/lb of dry beans for dealing with old beans that won't soften the old fashioned way without any problems. You can also add the bicarb to the soaking water if making dry beans. Discard and rinse, as usual.

One of those is a function of government and the other two are enriched by the product being purchased rather than being a ploy to gather user PII to be sold to the highest bidder.

And neither of those 3 knows much about me other than I drive, purchase tobacco or alcoholic beverages. They don't know who my prom date was or who I worked for in 2012 or what movie I'm currently watching or where I eat lunch every day or what my religious beliefs are or where my political allegiances lie.

b00ty4breakfast··on US special forces soldier arrested after allegedly winning $400k on Maduro raid
How much a particular head of state fits into the modern, western conception of liberalism and democracy should have no bearing on the matter; Kidnapping that head of state and putting him on trial in a different country for crimes he is, at best, peripherally involved in is untenable. Especially when the very obvious motivation is self-enrichment rather than bringing any of that liberal democracy to the populace.
b00ty4breakfast··on Norway set to become latest country to ban social media for under 16s
if it's bad for society then regulate the Social Media companies rather than shifting the burden on the citizenry through ID laws and backdooring increased surveillance under the guise of "muh chillren!"
b00ty4breakfast··on Meta tells staff it will cut 10% of jobs
Probably because Instagram wasn't a direct competitor to any of those other companies (except maybe Google+, which wasn't even a year old at the time that FB bought Instagram). I don't know why softbank didn't get them.
b00ty4breakfast··on Meta tells staff it will cut 10% of jobs
Pretty sure they bought Insta and Whatsapp. I mean, that's not nothing, buying a successful business and keeping it successful for over a decade. But neither Zuck nor Meta made those platforms; they were both established successes in their own right before acquisition.
b00ty4breakfast··on Books are not too expensive
I have plenty of ebooks, and the main advantage there, for me, is the info density. But there are still advantages to paper books. For one thing, I can't have my paper books revoked after purchase, something that happened to me more than once on amazon before I wised up and started downloading my books to my PC (before they went and made that impossible). I don't shop at amazon much for anything these days but it could happen anywhere with DRM. (which is another advantage; I don't have to waste time stripping the DRM off of paper books).

For another thing, I don't need to worry about charging a paper book and I don't need to have a battery pack and cables to read a book if the power is out or I'm somewhere without electricity. That's probably not a concern for most of the folks on HN but I personally prefer having a reduced infrastructural dependence for certain activities.

Reading on a screen also destroys my attention span. Again, that's not necessarily a common concern for most people but if I'm reading anything heavier than Raymond Chandler, I feel like my brain turns to oatmeal on an e-reader or a computer screen.

Calibre (though this is not so simple with Amazon ebooks since they disabled downloading books to your PC)
b00ty4breakfast··on Palantir Wants to Reinstate the Draft
Even if folks don't kill their commanding officers, this attitude indicates that they are less than willing to just accept their fate (with the usual caveat that you made about anecdotes and also that social media in general isn't necessarily reflective of reality).
b00ty4breakfast··on Palantir Wants to Reinstate the Draft
Unless you have popular support behind you, a draft is a great way to make your military less effective. You get a bunch of soldiers who don't want to be there, who may not do their job to the utmost either out of apathy or active malice. It also gives lots of people, who might otherwise passively disagree with your war, a great incentive to actively resist your war and your attempts to force them to fight in it.

It worked in WWII because of Pearl Harbor and the Axis being cartoon villains. Direct US involvement also only lasted 4-5 years. Vietnam demonstrated that an unpopular, long-term conflict is ill-suited to the draft.

b00ty4breakfast··on Tesla tells HW3 owner to 'be patient' after 7 years of waiting for FSD
The freedoms afforded by obnoxious wealth far outweigh the loss of anonymity. These folks could buy an entire franchise of pizzerias on a whim and have them transported to a chain of private islands in the Pacific.

The myth of the tortured life of the rich and famous is a joke.

b00ty4breakfast··on The "Passive Income" trap ate a generation of entrepreneurs
I've been hearing about "passive income" for at least the last 10 years, and I reckon it goes back further than that.
b00ty4breakfast··on The Deepfake Nudes Crisis in Schools Is Worse Than You Thought
Well, I'd start by making the production of deepfake porn that depicts real people illegal, doubly so if it depicts children or teens. Fictional depictions of underage people in sexual situations are already illegal in many jurisdictions.

I don't necessarily like the idea of punitive justice in general but that's the framework under which our society is currently operating so it's time to make lemonade I guess.

b00ty4breakfast··on YouTube now lets you turn off Shorts
I think there used to be a ublock filter to hide ytshorts but I haven't used youtube in a while at this so I can't be sure I'm not imagining it.

This is obviously not helpful if you use a smartTV or the app, in which case I would recommend using one of the third party apps like newpipe or whatever the smarttv 3p app is called

Boredom and time breeds creativity.
b00ty4breakfast··on The Deepfake Nudes Crisis in Schools Is Worse Than You Thought
I think in this instance the issue is that these tools shouldn't be available at all to anyone, adult or child. There are not many use-cases for generating porn from images of real people who aren't porn stars and most of them are not good.

b00ty4breakfast··on We spoke to the man making viral Lego-style AI videos for Iran
condemning the US != condoning the Iranian regime. This is not rocket appliance, you guys; saying it's wrong to murder cat burglars while they eat dinner with their kids is not an endorsement of burglary (especially when the murder is about collecting life insurance rather than stopping burglary)
b00ty4breakfast··on We spoke to the man making viral Lego-style AI videos for Iran
Criticizing the US's actions against Iran is in no way condoning the things that the regime has done to it's own citizens. Especially since those actions are contributing directly to the Iranian people's hardship.

I'm not saying that you, personally, are being deliberately obtuse and unnuanced about this (and I'm not even saying that there aren't people who are sympathizing with the Iranian regime) but there are absolutely people being deliberately obtuse and unnuanced about it.

b00ty4breakfast··on Show HN: Pardonned.com – A searchable database of US Pardons
There is no universe where any pardon is abolished unless there is a massive political shakeup. The entrenched political class is terrified of endangering their power and privilege even if individual players are ready to do it.

Of course they are, because the tech industry is run by ethical midgets and psychopaths, who shouldn't be allowed to own a dog but are in charge of trillion-dollar corporations getting shadow contracts from the pentagon.

The more I learn about tech and the people that build it, the more I yearn for the era of caves and pointy sticks.

b00ty4breakfast··on After 20 years I turned off Google Adsense for my websites (2025)
I don't get the impression that the OP was deliberately breaking the ToS. That doesn't mean they weren't violation but you usually inform someone when they are breaking the rules, even if you are taking punitive measures. It would be like arresting someone and never telling them what they are being arrested for. Not only is it scummy behavior to not tell them but it also doesn't effectively communicate to others that the thing won't be tolerated.
b00ty4breakfast··on After 20 years I turned off Google Adsense for my websites (2025)
or at least an explanation. That would of course require a customer service apparatus designed to service customers rather than one designed to force them to become tangled in the abyssal morass.
b00ty4breakfast··on Microsoft hasn't had a coherent GUI strategy since Petzold
I know this isn't really your main point but I don't think they've been trying to reduce complexity but rather increasing ease-of-use for the end-user*. Those things are often completely at odds with each other in software as I'm sure you know.

*well, that seems to have been their goal in the past; nowadays it just seems like they've been trying to funnel windows users to their other products and forcing copilot into everything.
