Why not just use gobby[1]?

b-man··on Dan Ingalls: Object-Oriented Programming - 1989 [video]
Annotated with the date.

It is a beautiful video. I also recommend to everyone who's interested in high quality material about OOP to read [1].

If anyone is interested in a great presentation about this topic, I really recommend this video[1].

b-man··on Ask HN: Good Teaching Materials for Precalculus Mathematics?
You could try Khan's academy, it is very cool IMHO. http://www.khanacademy.org/index.html#Pre-algebra

For teaching materials, try cnx

http://cnx.org/content/col10615/latest/

I would try out something in the LOGO philosophy also (scratch, etoys and so forth). The web is flowing with rich material, so get a shovel and dig up.

I Hope you find some gems.

b-man··on Ask HN: Is there a point to school?
'There are a lot of things you can teach, but the most important ones must be learned.'

One thing that I would love that someone else had shown to me when I has in high school is what does it mean to learn, and how to learn. These are some resources that really helped me understand the value of true learning [1][2][3]

What I would recommend is that you wait some years to get into university/college. You really have no reason to rush, and the whole experience, if you later choose to live it, could be much more enjoyed if more maturity. Go travel, study programming by yourself or doing projects, study languages in other countries, take some telecommuting jobs, take some risks, and above all else, learn what does it mean to learn.

b-man··on Ten Challenges
and it baffles me to hear him describe how it is too rich and dense for him to finish

I'm not saying that this is your case, but usually when this happens it is because the other person is looking at things that you are not.

Reminds me of a time when I heard Robert Sapolsky saying that he did not handle his own stress in a good way. I'm pretty sure he handles it better than me and most people, but he has the knowledge that he is just scratching the surface.

Looks also like that quote from Socrates 'I am the wisest man alive, for I know one thing, and that is that I know nothing.'

b-man··on Call to genocide: radio in Rwanda
The use of social media (as in local and national radio with social participation) and radio as triggers and facilitators for deep cultural and social changes does gratify my intellectual curiosity, that's why I posted it.

It's not just a political thing, this genocide was shaped by the use of current technology, and it is a hint of what could be coming in the future in my opinion.

b-man··on Microsoft’s Creative Destruction
No one in his right mind should wish Microsoft failure.

I've met quite a few people, who in my opinion had quite sane and intelligent minds, who wished for MS failure, for a lot of well based reasons.

b-man··on Howard Zinn, historian who challenged status quo, dies at 87
I'm not finding counts of deaths, nor listings of atrocities, for these.

Argument from ignorance. They were in the same league from the point of view of their victims.

But if you believed that doing so was somehow right (again, the "greatest good" nonsense or something), then it's OK?

I never said that. From available evidence, not one of the people you mentioned did their atrocities for the ``greatest good'', and it would not matter if that was the case, because the willingness to commit atrocities is the monstrous thing.

b-man··on Howard Zinn, historian who challenged status quo, dies at 87
Specifically one from my own country,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artur_da_Costa_e_Silva

Argentina's story is a bit more brutal

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Argentina_(1966%E2%8...

All over South America during the 60~80 there were numerous 'capitalist' brutal dictatorships.

And then there's more, such as

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suharto

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohammad_Reza_Pahlavi

Never forget, what makes you a monster is not that you killed millions, but that you were willing to do it in order to maintain your power.

b-man··on Howard Zinn, historian who challenged status quo, dies at 87
I could only stomach the first 10 pages, and quit. But that little peak certainly made me think of socialism.

10 pages is enough to link the guy to socialism? really?

The rhetoric about helping the little guy is just what monsters like Lenin and Mao find it easiest to use to hoodwink the masses.

Monsters use any rhetoric they think will fit at their historic moment. This is just a red shirted example of Godwin's law.

b-man··on Ask HN: Good books for starting functional programming?
Try HTDP, Concrete Abstractions or Concepts, Techniques, and Models of Computer Programming.

The * Schemer books are cool too.

b-man··on Ask HN: My nephew wants to learn programming. What should I recommend?
I would recommend several things,

Squeak by Example[1], or better yet etoys[2]

How to design worlds, as already mentioned here

Alice[3], with something like [4].

Good old scratch from the logo tradition would also be cool[5].

[1] http://squeakbyexample.org/

[2] http://www.squeakland.org/

[3] http://www.alice.org/

[4] http://www.aliceprogramming.net/

[5] http://scratch.mit.edu/

Check them all out and decide for yourself. All of them are very consistent and fun.

b-man··on The world's most evil entrepreneur?
I propose a test for this guy.

Let's plant some live mines in a large field, and simply ask him to cross it a few times, using his little tech wonder detector.

I'll bet all my possessions that he will promptly refuse, on some 'atmospheric impossibility' or some other shit.

b-man··on The world's most evil entrepreneur?
Man, how on earth would you explain this[1] to your boss?

b-man··on Avatar: The Holocaust We Will Not See
There was miscegenation for sure, not only with native people but between Europeans, Africans and everyone else that came here.

But that does not imply that there was not an extermination. [1]

b-man··on Marijuana might cause new cell growth in the brain
``In a second procedure, which is the favored treatment in the United States, a single, very high LSD dose (0.3 to 0.6 mg) is administered after correspondingly intensive psychological preparation of the patients. This method, described as psychedelic therapy, attempts to induce a mystical-religious experience through the shock effects of LSD. This experience can then serve as a starting point for a restructuring and curing of the patient's personality in the accompanying psychotherapeutic treatment. The term psychedelic, which can be translated as "mind-manifesting" or "mind-expanding," was introduced by Humphry Osmond, a pioneer of LSD research in the United States.''[1]

Read the rest of the reference, you'll find why/how LSD became associated with the counter-culture, and then became illegal because of that. My take is that LSD, when administered responsibly, can lead to major positive life changes for those in need.

It is a pity that it is illegal, which only increases the risk of abuse/work dosage/mixing with other stuff, but perhaps in a more civilized age...

b-man··on Maemo vs. Android
My take on it:

The multitude of useful apps that are already on the market and can be easily ported for maemo makes it a very strong player.

I know I'm not mainstream market, not even close, but KeePassX, Vim, Mplayer, VLC, Xmms, Abiword. Those are valuable open source projects that are already there for the maemo.

b-man··on [dead]
"Let me tell you about the history of one guy who bought the greatest apartment in the 80th floor of a super moder building, thinking it would make him happy.

But then he discovered that every morning what he saw in all that luxury was a high place to jump."

Never let your work consume you. Never let anything consume you, because then, well, there would not be a you to enjoy anything afterwards.

b-man··on Got API, an API documentation aggregator
Fixed.
b-man··on Cyclone: a safe dialect of C
But for many more projects, C is just there because it was there at the start. For those Cyclone seems very ok.
b-man··on Should I learn Scala or Erlang
Sincerely, I advice Scheme. Perhaps PLT scheme using htdp.org or SICP.
b-man··on Apple's Mistake
My vote for a truly free hand-held platform is the n900[1].

It's beautiful, clean and comes with with Debian based distro, Maemo.

My opinions about apple were never positive, probably because I'm only 25 and did not program in the 80's. I've only saw apple as a manufacturer of shiny, well designed rich boy toys, but that is probably because I live in Brazil, where only rich people have it and they think they are 'computer people' because of it.

I was always more influenced by the open source community, and apple's record is far from shiny on that aspect.

My 2 cents.

b-man··on Microsoft makes patent claim for sparklines
Microsoft, amongst several other companies, is a profit oriented corporation that has an history of predatory behavior.

You don't ask why a snake bites you, because it is its nature to do so.

b-man··on Papert―logo in your browser
Well, I'm sure you could help out the project instead of building another one, or you could just continue on :)
b-man··on Ask HN: Guido van Rossum's comment about go and scratch
Scratch, Squeak and other similar environments follow the leading of Seymour Papert and his Logo language:

low threshold and no ceiling

For that they are different, and for that they are interesting.
