azundo··on Why Zulip will stand the test of time
> Project status: Alpha. While this project works and is used by many sites in production, configuring is substantially more error-prone than the normal Zulip installer (which Just Works).

There is a docker container but as Zulip themselves say, it is not simple to deploy.

azundo··on Summary of the AWS Service Event in the Northern Virginia (US-East-1) Region
> This resulted in a large surge of connection activity that overwhelmed the networking devices between the internal network and the main AWS network, resulting in delays for communication between these networks. These delays increased latency and errors for services communicating between these networks, resulting in even more connection attempts and retries. This led to persistent congestion and performance issues on the devices connecting the two networks.

I remember my first experience realizing the client retry logic we had implemented was making our lives way worse. Not sure if it's heartening or disheartening that this was part of the issue here.

Our mistake was resetting the exponential backoff delay whenever a client successfully connected and received a response. At the time a percentage but not all responses were degraded and extremely slow, and the request that checked the connection was not. So a client would time out, retry for a while, backing off exponentially, eventually successfully reconnect and then after a subsequent failure start aggressively trying again. System dynamics are hard.

azundo··on In 2019 40% of San Francisco traffic fatalities are from left turns
The linked page describes exactly that - "Left Turn Calming" projects.

> At SFMTA, we’re working hard to help drivers make left turns the right way. We’ve installed Left Turn Guide Bumps at designated intersections around the City, with painted safety zones and raised bumps to remind drivers to slow down and make squarer left turns. We’ll test how well these treatments make left turns safer, with a long-term goal of installing calming project at other intersections where they are needed most.

azundo··on How to use dig
> By the way: if you’ve ever wondered what IN means, it’s the “query class” and stands for “internet”. It’s basically just a relic from the 80s and 90s when there were other networks competing with the internet like “chaosnet”.

Reading things like this makes me feel better about the relics in my code that aren't really hurting anything but would take work to remove.

azundo··on Rust programming for web developers, by a web developer
It's inconsistent for me - sometimes it runs fine and runs almost immediately, sometimes it hangs for a long time.
azundo··on How to programmatically find out if computer is on
Since the behavior is undefined when the computer is off this implementation seems correct in your hypothetical as well.
azundo··on The Tinkerbell Griftopia
Not at all, they're suggesting that even clear benefits like driving have some negative outcomes. Whether NFTs/Crypto is more like driving (positives outweigh the negatives) or more like drunk driving (negatives outweigh the positives) is the question.
azundo··on Adults who microdose psychedelics report lower levels of depression and anxiety [pdf]
What's interesting to me about this study is it was done with people who already actively microdose. So they have prior experience of what non-placebo microdosing feels like to them. The placebo effect might be much stronger in that population than a population that has never microdosed. That could be great news in terms of long term benefits of microdosing by using a combo of placebo and actual psychedelics.
azundo··on Python 3.10
Quickly reading through I'm most excited about the `SyntaxError` improvements https://docs.python.org/3/whatsnew/3.10.html#syntaxerrors. I can't even count the number of times a missing paren or bracket has caused a syntax error in an unrelated place, so if this is indeed improved that's enough to motivate me to move to 3.10.
azundo··on Which jobs most often pair together among married couples
FTA "Other agricultural workers" is the highest at 23%.
azundo··on MacBook Pro 14-inch and MacBook Pro 16-inch
The lag truly makes it unusable. Trying to mute? Hit the mute button. Did it register and is just laggy? Or just missed the tap altogether? Why have an always-on touchbar that doesn't even respond to taps consistently.
azundo··on Ask HN: How do you memorize things you read?
I think he rather took short notes, then attempted to rewrite the material based on the notes, comparing to the original afterwards. This would seem to me to be much more effective than copying directly out of the book when it comes to recall.
azundo··on Ask HN: Unplugging
Six days of every week? For how many weeks?
azundo··on Why we spent the last month eliminating PostgreSQL subtransactions
Seems like they listened to your feedback, the article now opens with a discussion of (1).
azundo··on What Happened to Treehouse?
Wouldn't it weirder if he kept the mansion? Perhaps he might not have been able to pay the mortgage anymore so he sold it? It's a bit shocking how tone deaf the the Instagram posts are though. Not really excusable when you're totally ghosting your company.
azundo··on Slack is experiencing a service disruption
Are they blaming them though? Is this not the actual fastest path to resolving the issue?
azundo··on When new seat belt laws drew fire as a violation of personal freedom (2020)
Not true, seat belts keep the driver in their seat and can allow the driver to maintain control when they wouldn't have been able to without one, potentially reducing the severity of a crash with another vehicle. Admittedly this is not the most common benefit of a seat belt but they are designed with this benefit in mind.
azundo··on New credit card rules in India: recurring card payments to be affected
The article you linked suggests that recurring card charges that use two factor authentication will not be banned. So I think the title is still overstating.
azundo··on Cryptocurrency is something people tell lies about in hopes of getting richer
It isn't about having money, it's about control of that money. Zuckerberg doesn't "have" the money he gives to his foundation, but he still controls it, vs taxes which he wouldn't.
azundo··on The whitest paint could eliminate the need for air conditioning
Bright white roofs are currently used to reduce urban heat island effects. They're great for the building occupants but are a literal eyesore for anyone above looking down. I can imagine this paint taking that to a whole new level.
azundo··on Every engineer should do a stint in consulting
Any founders or early employees out there who have experience doing this after their startup exits or closes? This idea really appeals to me and I could see myself doing this sometime in the next five years. I'd be interested to hear how it's gone for others.
azundo··on “It's open source! We’ll let our customers fix it.”
> If you have expectations (of others) that aren't being met, those expectations are your own responsibility. You are responsible for your own needs. If you want things, make them.

Great advice for life generally.

azundo··on The goal of standards is to improve our future actions
I had a similar realization after reading Radical Compassion by Tara Brach. The concept of the two darts of suffering in Buddhism has also been extremely valuable to me. The first dart is the immediate pain (laundry didn't get done) and the second dart is the self-inflicted pain caused by the stories we tell to ourselves ("I can't even get a simple load of laundry done, I am a terrible person who will never accomplish anything.") It's usually the second dart that causes the most suffering despite being entirely created in our own heads and self inflicted.

azundo··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2021)
Numida Technologies | Senior Django Backend Engineer | Data Analyst | Kampala, Uganda - Onsite, VISA | Canada - REMOTE | https://numida.com

At Numida we provide meaningful, unsecured working capital loans to small and micro-enterprises in sub-Saharan Africa, currently focused in Uganda. These businesses drive the majority of job creation on the Continent and yet are underserved to the tune of $167B a year. We started Numdia thinking we'd make a dent in this gap by building better data collection systems for existing microfinance institutions but quickly realized that none of our early partners were willing to remove their reliance on steep collateral requirements as security for their loans. We needed to build something entirely new to successfully finance hard-working entrepreneurs without existing wealth to stake as collateral.

We've found a scalable model that combines automation with human review when necessary to drastically reduce costs while maintaining high quality underwriting. We have best-in-class recovery rates above 93% and retention rates in the mid-nineties. We've disbursed north of $2M this year to thousands of clients and despite business impact due to a second round of COVID-related lockdowns have doubled our monthly disbursements in the past 6 months and are projected to more than double again by the end of the year.

We're looking for a Senior Django Backend Engineer and Data Analyst to help us scale our current operations in Uganda and launch in a new geography by the end of the year. If you're interested please email me directly at ben@numidatech.com with the job you're applying for in the subject line, your resume and why solving the financing gap for micro-enterprises is personally meaningful to you.

azundo··on Hell Is Other REPLs
Probably good feedback for the author. People don't have time to read every article they come across fully so they're evaluating quality as they go. Throwaway comments like this will have the effect of losing audience so best to leave them out.
azundo··on Helm is a personal server that lives where you do
My understanding is that the customers would be allowed to distribute/modify the source at that point though so you're not really getting around the GPL.
azundo··on Latency Sneaks Up on You
This principle applies as much to the work we schedule for ourselves (or our teams) as it does to our servers.

As teams get pushed to efficiently utilize scarce and expensive developer resources to their max they can also end up with huge latency issues for unanticipated requests. Not always easy to justify why planned work is way under a team's capacity though even if it leads to better overall outcomes at the end of the day.

azundo··on New in Git: switch and restore
While reflog is amazing, the "ever" in your statement is not true, `git gc` will prune your reflog: https://git-scm.com/docs/git-gc

Most of the time this doesn't matter in practice but you should be aware that unreachable refs don't stay around forever.
